Return to The Jones Fork - Backpacking Desolation Wilderness
Not having the best backpacking season, I manage to get out again for a quickie - back to that wonderful little campsite at the Jones Fork of Silver Creek that I was forced to evacuate from due to mosquitos previously. This time it was a great 2 night stay.

To be honest, I wasn't sure I wanted to post this video. It's the only trip that I took this summer and it wasn't a raging success. Swarmed by mosquitoes, I spent most of the time complaining - who wants to see that? But instead of posting my usual overlong video, I cut this one WAY back and removed much of the monologue - just the trail and campsite facts only. The last couple of years, depres...

    My brother took me on this hike in 1966 except we camped north of Clyde next to the Rubicon River. There were lots of Boy Scouts there at the time. The major changes seem to mostly be regulatory. I have often dreamed of fishing Clyde Lake from an inflatable boat, although I have never heard of anyone fishing Clyde Lake.

    Nice review, unfortunately soft ground use doesn't seem to be a consideration. I own a Helinox Sunset Chair and a Ground Chair. I had to buy a ground sheet for the Sunset which adds bulk and inconvenience when using it on softer ground otherwise the feet start sinking. The same would apply to the Chair One, for me the Ground Chair square foot print spreads weight more preventing it sinking which is a big advantage over the other two and no added bulk of carrying and fitting a ground sheet.

    Hmm, still at 360p. I'll watch it in a bit when YT is done processing the video. I was hoping to see what the current conditions are, but it's still nice to see DW. I'm going to drive up the coast tomorrow to backpack in Olympic National Park. I was concerned with the snow cups, stream crossings, and weakening snow bridges in the Sierra.

    • @SacWildlife
      @SacWildlife Рік тому

      Processing is really slow - it says another 18min at this point. Here's a snow update. I talked to a woman that hiked to Twin Lakes in late may. They had to park FAR from the parking area with 4WD (that's outside the Wrights Lake gate) and had to use snowshoes to get there - a really impressive hike. And just the other day - June 29th I talked to another woman that I met on Lover's Leap who had hiked from Echo Lake to Susie lake and had lots of trouble staying on trail. Had lots of trouble finding a dryish place to camp. What a season! No mosquitoes yet. I didn't see any on my Lover's Leap hike on the 29th. That will change soon and I assume it will be horrible all July. But there should be plenty of water.

    The REI Flexlite air is even lighter than the Zero, less than a pound, same height, sale for $70 right now and I heard that on July 4th it’ll be $50.

    • @SacWildlife
      @SacWildlife Рік тому

      I've been meaning to address this. I bought one of those chairs and have been using it the last couple of years, but I don't have a fully matured opinion yet. It IS about the same height as the Chair-Zero and is about the same weight. And yes, it's a good deal cheaper, but my inclination is that the chair-zero is still the better chair - it feels like it will outlive the Flexlite by a good long time, but if $ is an important factor, the Flexlite wins hands down. I made a video on the subject, but it wasn't good enough to post - at that time, I was purely undecided.

  • @darwiniandude
    @darwiniandude Рік тому

    Thanks for your comparison. I am thinking of which Helinox to buy right now. I like the idea of more height, particularly for eating - but we live near the beach and go there often too, and the Helinox Ground with it's cross bars I think is far less likely to sink into the sand. Since you posted this 5 years ago are you still happy with your choice of the Zero?

    • @SacWildlife
      @SacWildlife Рік тому

      re chairs sinking in soft ground - that just isn't much of a problem in the tahoe area sierra where I do most of my backpacking. You can buy a device from helinox that creates are flat plane of the bottom 4 corners. I have since bought an REI chair that is a little taller and a little lighter that I've used recently. I'm not confident that it will last like the Chair Zero so I'm still keeping it too.

    When did this trip take place? I was with a buddy at Grouse the weekend of Oct 15 and it was gorgeous. I love music and the backcountry, though I don't like to bring the former into the latter. Nonetheless, the Neil Young clip really hit the spot in your video. I thought the album was Hitchiker but now I'm thinking it was Homegrown? If you don't already know it, check out the song "Houses" by Elyse Weinberg with guitar accompaniment by Neil. (Bonus: Dinosaur Jr does a great cover.) • @KJ6EAD

    You probably realize that there's an inherent conflict in your campsite goals. You favor the most popular lakeside sites but are dismayed when other people show up. If you really want solitude, you'll have to camp away from obvious travel routes along lake and stream sides. That northeastern peninsula of Desolation Lake is small enough that it's probably not legal due to water proximity. As you've noticed, people regularly break the rules regarding sites and fires. Everyone thinks they should be the exception and the result is a lot of really ugly damage like we had during the backpacking boom of the eighties. The official response was smaller group size limits, a total fire ban and eventually a really onerous zone system. I've been out of the area for more than ten years now but before I left, I'd gotten to the point where I mostly stuck to day and night hiking without camping to avoid the worst restrictions. Wilderness area designation can have an unintended counterproductive effect by attracting large numbers of users to relatively small areas. For those who place high value on campfires, campsites on lake and stream shores and solitude, national forest outside of wilderness areas can be a better choice. I'm happy to see you're getting good value from that old guide book I recommended. The story about how the Echo Lakes Fishing and Hiking Club or whatever they called themselves named the Desolation Valley lakes after themselves has always been a great source of amusement for me to share with my hiking companions. Did your Magellan gadget turn itself on in your pack or what?
