In 1986, while hanging out on the summit of Muir Pass, I met another hiker there and we spent some time together. At one point he reached into is backpack and pulled out something about the size of a breadbox. A VHS video camera. I laughed. I thought it was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever seen. He shot some video of the stone hut, the surrounding mountains and of me too - he filmed us just talking.
Now YEARS later, it just kills me that somewhere out in the world is video footage of me in my prime on top of Muir pass - and I don't have it. Not only that... I can barely remember any details from 30 years ago if I don't have picture of it.
I wish I had taken more pictures. I wish I had video of my trips.
After my first bout of aging reality (a downhill hike that didn't agree with my knee that kept me off the trail for two years) I trimmed down my load and reworked the way I hike and am now excited about getting out into the wild again. AND this time, I'm recording EVERYTHING!

Return to The Jones Fork - Backpacking Desolation Wilderness
Not having the best backpacking season, I manage to get out again for a quickie - back to that wonderful little campsite at the Jones Fork of Silver Creek that I was forced to evacuate from due to mosquitos previously. This time it was a great 2 night stay.

Desolation Wilderness - Triangle Lake - Backpacking Two Night Trip

My first solo trip of the year and it's an EASY ONE. A mere two miles from the Echo Lake boat taxi pier, I find a small lake and camp there for two nights and managed to get away from the typical crowds - I only saw one other backpacker while at Triangle Lake.

To be honest, I wasn't sure I wanted to post this video. It's the only trip that I took this summer and it wasn't a raging success. Swarmed by mosquitoes, I spent most of the time complaining - who wants to see that? But instead of posting my usual overlong video, I cut this one WAY back and removed much of the monologue - just the trail and campsite facts only. The last couple of years, depres...

For me, this surreal backpacking season begins with a little trip to my old standby, Twin Lakes. I had been nursing a foot injury for months, so I needed an easy test hike.

I do a four day/three night hike out of Meeks Bay. I spend one night at Stoney Ridge Lake and then two nights at Phipps Lake - and old favorite that I haven't seen since the 90s. All is well and good until near the end where I had to help rescue a horse in trouble on the high pass trail.

Great video! What month was this? I'm heading up in two weeks and thinking it'll be buggy. Hope the fishing's good!
Had to say, trees don't grow up from the bottom!! 😅 If that nail's at 8ft, it always was. Fences don't get lifted when tree trunks grow around/through them, right?
Nice video, will you be getting back to D.W. this season? This brings back so many wonderful memories from this area of the Sierras.
A pro for me of the mayfly (now sold by grand trunk) not mentioned here is that because it is really built to just use the two back balls as contact points (the bar is optional) it is great to rock or lean back in.
Great video as always! Looking forward to getting back out there in 2024!
Great video, as always. Looked very chill-nice! Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks for this video. I follow you because Desolation has great memories for me as a young Boy Scout who spent summers at either former BSA's Camp Harvey West on Echo Lakes and the Loon Lake Wilderness camp.
Glad you enjoyed it - get back out there while you still can :-)
Great to see you out again. By far your videos are the most informative out there of Dexolation Wilderness. Thanks👍👍
Thank you for sharing your adventure. It's very good to see you out in the wilderness again.
You summoned the strength to edit! Yuuuus! 🎉 first two minutes in and I can relate!! It's really tough to break the psychological barrier to torture your body on the trail. But I miss it as I'm sure you did! I gotta get back out there.
I think it's always worth gerting out there! And sometimes we do wonder why we do it! Filming in the dark is always a challenge. Have you great day! Kaat
Hope you're still planning trips into Desolation! Great seeing all these little lakes Ive yet to visit.
Thanks - I did a couple of trips last summer and have been too lazy to put them up - soon.
@SacWildlife nice! Look forward to it! I didn't get any trips in this past summer. Been missing the Sierras a lot!
My brother took me on this hike in 1966 except we camped north of Clyde next to the Rubicon River. There were lots of Boy Scouts there at the time. The major changes seem to mostly be regulatory. I have often dreamed of fishing Clyde Lake from an inflatable boat, although I have never heard of anyone fishing Clyde Lake.
i seen a marmot right above island lake
Nice review, unfortunately soft ground use doesn't seem to be a consideration. I own a Helinox Sunset Chair and a Ground Chair. I had to buy a ground sheet for the Sunset which adds bulk and inconvenience when using it on softer ground otherwise the feet start sinking. The same would apply to the Chair One, for me the Ground Chair square foot print spreads weight more preventing it sinking which is a big advantage over the other two and no added bulk of carrying and fitting a ground sheet.
Just got back from a backpacking trip to Lyons Lake after watching your video. It was super helpful, thanks so much. We were the only ones out there! 😊
Was that area ever damaged by the wildfires? I am assuming you trekked out there around September/October since you had the entire place to yourself.
What trail were you on to get to that waterfall. Heading to Ralston then Susie lake in a week.
The trail that goes around Susie lake hops over the outlet. Just follow the outlet for a few minutes. It's only 100 yards or so off the trail.
Upper end of echo lake was BSA camp Harvey West. I camped with scouts and spent slot of time hiking and fishing in Desolation Valley. That was long ago. Before wilderness permits.thank you for sharing video of desolation valley.
Where do you park for an overnight hike
There's a gigantic parking lot - you can't miss it
@@halbertmac at the sno-pack do you get your overnight permit there?
I was just thinking about new DW hike content from your channel and here it is!
Beautiful videos. You capture the backpacking experience very well. I look forward to your next season. Thank you!
thank you - very kind of you to say...
could not agree more!
Great content! Lakes Tamarack, Ralston and Aloha are also relatively easy destinations for winter/early spring camping. Hope you have a fantastic 2023 backpacking season!
Fingers crossed - after those two consecutive years of fire smoke, I get a little anxious this time of year.
@@SacWildlife Hope you're doing good. It has been a very hot and humid summer so far - not ideal hiking weather. Hopefully, September will bring some cooler temperatures and better hiking conditions.
This is an early Christmas present. Been hoping to see more videos from you!
Hmm, still at 360p. I'll watch it in a bit when YT is done processing the video. I was hoping to see what the current conditions are, but it's still nice to see DW. I'm going to drive up the coast tomorrow to backpack in Olympic National Park. I was concerned with the snow cups, stream crossings, and weakening snow bridges in the Sierra.
Processing is really slow - it says another 18min at this point. Here's a snow update. I talked to a woman that hiked to Twin Lakes in late may. They had to park FAR from the parking area with 4WD (that's outside the Wrights Lake gate) and had to use snowshoes to get there - a really impressive hike. And just the other day - June 29th I talked to another woman that I met on Lover's Leap who had hiked from Echo Lake to Susie lake and had lots of trouble staying on trail. Had lots of trouble finding a dryish place to camp. What a season! No mosquitoes yet. I didn't see any on my Lover's Leap hike on the 29th. That will change soon and I assume it will be horrible all July. But there should be plenty of water.
I was just thinking that I haven’t seen a video of yours for a while, and I just randomly got on your page and there is a new video which I’m excited for.
I am constantly amazed that anyone could be excited to hear anything I might have to say. FASTEST comment EVER. I think it finished uploading just a little while ago and is still being processed (not ready for proper viewing). I was too lazy to get this one edited and uploaded until a recent hike to Lover's Leap - my annual break in hike. Now I'm getting excited for the hiking season.
Any plans for this season? Your videos from D.W. are probably some of the best on youtube.
I sure hope so - I'm in terrible shape and am dealing with a calf injury (also - I'm old), but I *should* be ready to go in July when things start melting.
Is that a My Trails tarp? Great video, you handled it like a champ. Love your videos👍
I'm pretty sure what you are asking about is an old golite poncho/shelter tarp thingy - everyone makes them now
The REI Flexlite air is even lighter than the Zero, less than a pound, same height, sale for $70 right now and I heard that on July 4th it’ll be $50.
I've been meaning to address this. I bought one of those chairs and have been using it the last couple of years, but I don't have a fully matured opinion yet. It IS about the same height as the Chair-Zero and is about the same weight. And yes, it's a good deal cheaper, but my inclination is that the chair-zero is still the better chair - it feels like it will outlive the Flexlite by a good long time, but if $ is an important factor, the Flexlite wins hands down. I made a video on the subject, but it wasn't good enough to post - at that time, I was purely undecided.
Really helpful. Thanks!
Thanks for doing this video. I was going through the same pros/cons for the various chairs and your video has helped me make my decision. Helinox Zero it is, even if it is a bit more.
Thanks for your comparison. I am thinking of which Helinox to buy right now. I like the idea of more height, particularly for eating - but we live near the beach and go there often too, and the Helinox Ground with it's cross bars I think is far less likely to sink into the sand. Since you posted this 5 years ago are you still happy with your choice of the Zero?
re chairs sinking in soft ground - that just isn't much of a problem in the tahoe area sierra where I do most of my backpacking. You can buy a device from helinox that creates are flat plane of the bottom 4 corners. I have since bought an REI chair that is a little taller and a little lighter that I've used recently. I'm not confident that it will last like the Chair Zero so I'm still keeping it too.
There is a footprint for the Zero in order to prevent it from sinking
I also would suggest earplugs to assist you with sleep😆😎
I so wish I could still do that. Major spinal surgeries, ankle surgeries have relegated me to living in chronic pain. I don't let it stop me but distance walking is out of the question. Never been there but I'm enjoying it with you. Thank you so much!🙏❤️✝️✝️✝️
I have the Mayfly from years ago. Somehow the YT algorithm started giving me Helinox Chair Zero vids. Pulled the trigger at EverestGear for $85, no tax, free ship. Love it.
Funny how sometimes youtube knows what you want before you do :-)
Helinox chairs are too low...
Good review. I like the Chair Zero, but sooner or later the feet will sink into the ground and snap a leg. It happened to me twice. You really need to add the footprint or the ball feet for this not to happen, which adds weight. ..but I still prefer the Chair Zero.
When did this trip take place? I was with a buddy at Grouse the weekend of Oct 15 and it was gorgeous. I love music and the backcountry, though I don't like to bring the former into the latter. Nonetheless, the Neil Young clip really hit the spot in your video. I thought the album was Hitchiker but now I'm thinking it was Homegrown? If you don't already know it, check out the song "Houses" by Elyse Weinberg with guitar accompaniment by Neil. (Bonus: Dinosaur Jr does a great cover.) "I've got my ticket in my hand/And I'm bound for the Promised Land!" Happy trails!
Wonderful weather this time of year for backpacking in DW. Thanks for the new content!
You probably realize that there's an inherent conflict in your campsite goals. You favor the most popular lakeside sites but are dismayed when other people show up. If you really want solitude, you'll have to camp away from obvious travel routes along lake and stream sides. That northeastern peninsula of Desolation Lake is small enough that it's probably not legal due to water proximity. As you've noticed, people regularly break the rules regarding sites and fires. Everyone thinks they should be the exception and the result is a lot of really ugly damage like we had during the backpacking boom of the eighties. The official response was smaller group size limits, a total fire ban and eventually a really onerous zone system. I've been out of the area for more than ten years now but before I left, I'd gotten to the point where I mostly stuck to day and night hiking without camping to avoid the worst restrictions. Wilderness area designation can have an unintended counterproductive effect by attracting large numbers of users to relatively small areas. For those who place high value on campfires, campsites on lake and stream shores and solitude, national forest outside of wilderness areas can be a better choice. I'm happy to see you're getting good value from that old guide book I recommended. The story about how the Echo Lakes Fishing and Hiking Club or whatever they called themselves named the Desolation Valley lakes after themselves has always been a great source of amusement for me to share with my hiking companions. Did your Magellan gadget turn itself on in your pack or what?
It was great meeting you on the trail yesterday (10/18/22). I love your videos. I used your past Lake of the Woods videos to prepare for my solo hike. Be safe. Thanks.
Hey, Hugh! Good to hear from you and great meeting you on the trail. Glad you made it out safe - thanks for watching!
Do you know how this lake is these days? Thanks!
I do not know, but Sylvia and Lyons Lakes were within the Caldor Fire burn zone. I haven't been to either since
How would I download the entire USA on topo into Android in one download?
haha, good luck with that
@@SacWildlife Do you have any actual advice?
Helinox Chair Zero is the Beyonce of backpacking chairs.
Did you see any fish in Triangle? Looks like a pretty lake!
I do not think there fish in Triangle Lake - I didn't see any jumping in the evenings.
Can’t wait to watch it!
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I always enjoy watching them. Just took my 10 year old son to Cathedral lake for his first backpacking trip. After he saw your last video he was inspired. We did one night and he loved it. Thanks again 😊
Wow, that's great. Glad i could help and really proud of your son.
This was helpful. I want to go there on my next Desolation trip. I went to Clyde Lake the last time, and that's beautiful.
New sub ! Liked 👏❤️👍
Great to see you and Punjita hiking together again! I recall the earlier videos with her swimming in every lake in Desolation.
Unfortunately, it's our new reality to get the trips out sooner to avoid fires and heat.
