According to one of the old guide books, the constructed rock walls on Mosquito Pass were a shepherd's shelter if I remember correctly. I haven't been in Rockbound Valley for about 40 years and never saw the Rubicon River without flow. The Platypus and Sawyer filters are small and light but because of their small elements, they're prone to clogging on poor water sources. A prefilter can mitigate the problem; even a bandana, coffee filter, etc. The Katadyn Hiker would be a good step up and the MSR MiniWorks has a field-maintainable ceramic element. You can solve the taste problem with an accessory or third party activated charcoal unit but these have to be replaced regularly as they have a limited service life once unsealed for use. Your explorations of hiker psychology made me smile. I think anyone who's spent enough time out in nature, especially alone, comes to understand what situations tend to trigger their particular anxieties and expend significant effort analyzing which and whether those various concerns are rational or not.
