Patagonia Micro Puff vs Enlightened Equipment Torrid Apex Jacket

  • Last winter I went on a quest to replace my Patagonia Ultralight Down Jacket with an artificial fill jacket. I ended up owning brand new versions of both the Patagonia Micro Puff and Enlightened Equipment Torrid Apex Jackets (almost by accident) so I got to compare them side by side.
    This video is extracted from my Twin Lakes Desolation Wilderness 2019 backpacking video. If you've already seen that, you've seen this.
    IMO, the better jacket was obvious and it might surprise you.
    Both of these jackets were purchased by me and I get no favors from either company.

    Extremely helpful review.
    (I was torn between the two.)
    Thanks!

    Good review! I have a variety of down jackets but I found the one I wear most, in not so cold temps, is the 32 Degree down jacket.I purchased it two years ago from Costco for $18. If I get a tear no big deal. Now if I get a rip in my Mountain Hardware, Patagonia, Columbia or North Face I shed big tears!

      Yeah - there's nothing that like that ice cold feeling in your veins when you damage a piece of high end gear.

    Great to see a comparison that is heart felt, direct and to the point! I'd be curious to hear your opinions after prolonged use.

      Last season, this jacket became my very favorite piece of gear. I liked it so much that I bought the pants too. I am a cheapskate and usually buy gear used or on closeout cheap, but I wanted those pants, so I bought direct from EE. That's high praise from me - still haven't gotten out this season for various injury reasons... soon I'm hoping!

    Enjoyed the review. I see a lot of people speaking really highly about the EE Torrid Apex. If you are genuinely getting rid of the Micropuff, I'm sure you could get a good deal of your money back from selling it on reddit or some other forum (or you could sell it really cheap to a less fortunate hiker:) ).

    Have had two of the Torrids. Both zippers failed, the one I used on the PCT this year is haha well, it's mostly Tenacious Tape now. It is NOT very sturdy, I seriously have about 20 holes in it, some rips 3 inches long. Going back to the Patagonia myself.

    The Patagonia Micro Puff is a bit more stylish though! And huge hoods are a problem as you are forever pulling them back over your head. My micro puff fits beautifully with no dropping over my eyes.

    • @SacWildlife

      While lookin' good, I'll be warm :-) And the hood can be adjusted to be exactly like the Micro Puff hood if that's what you want (I don't). There is also a pretty significant price difference AND the EE jacket can be customized. I'm STILL in love with this jacket. Last time I went out, I pretty much decided that it was currently my very favorite piece of gear.

    Thank you! This was helpful. My current down jacket isnt very warm and I've been torn on whether I should buy the Torrid and if it will be warm enough. I love down, but I worry it will be useless on the AT if it gets wet in all that rain.

      I have absolutely no regrets. I've pretty much decided that this jacket is my favorite piece of gear that I've purchased in the last 5 years. I bought the pants as well late last season. They weigh less than long underwear that I own... gonna go out with a lighter sleeping bag next season if it ever gets here.

    Are you still loving the Torrid and have you worn it when significantly wet? If so, did it retain warmth and how long did it take to dry out?

    • @SacWildlife
      @SacWildlife  4 роки тому +2

      oh, god I LOVE this jacket! I love it more every day. It has really changed the way I pack. I just got a pair of the torrid apex pants that I used for a mid-novemeber trip. I love them too! But I've never gotten either of them wet. It might not happen for years since I'll have a good oversized rain shell and probably an umbrella on hand if it rains.

      SacWildlife Thank you for the awesomely fast reply. I am seriously thinking about getting this jacket but really wanted to know how it performed when wet which in my mind is the major advantage of it over down. Sure wish I could get it for $75.

      SacWildlife Many thanks for responding! Are you sure this is the case, the “Coyote 10D” appears to be a gold/yellow colour, I was thinking it was either the “Charcoal 10D” or the “Graphite 7D” as those are the two grey colours they offer. Appreciate your help

      @@Ben-uw2lt I was confused by your confusion until I took a look at the color in the video - the color is off. It looks much darker in the video that it does in real life. The color is golden, but looks like dark gray in the video.

    • @SacWildlife
      @SacWildlife  5 років тому

      I should have included this - as I recall, the XL Patagonia was about 11.5oz and the EE XL was 10.9oz

    Pretty much a shitty review. I’ve owned both. The Torrid is a fine ultra light that will last a couple of seasons but loses its loft and can’t be “refluffed”.by machine washing and drying. The 7D nylon version (lightest weight) rips very easily if you use it as an outer layer. It should last for a thru hike or a couple of years of town use. Just be aware of its limitations. The Patagonia micro puff can be refluffed and cleaned with a squirt of Dr. Bronners, a gentle cycle wash, and the no heat fluff cycle on your dryer. When hiking, I find both are too warm between April and October in the lower 48 states and the addition of a proper shell and base take me down to 10 degrees F. during the winter. The snug hood on the micro puff easily fits under a helmet when mountaineering or backcountry skiing. Patagonia will fix or replace anything that goes wrong with their equipment wherever and whenever you acquired it forever. Good luck with Enlightened Equipment. Patagonia is serious about their ironclad warranty. BTW, if old, sloppy joe isn’t happy with the loft in his Patagonia down sweater, he could send it back to them or drop it off at one of their stores and they will fix it either by washing and drying it properly (likely the issue) or adding down.
    All that said, the best lightweight Synthetic mid layer out there is the Montbell UL Thermawrap Men’s Parka. My new go to for 40 to 10 degrees F. In the Olympics, Cascades and Sierras.
