  • My first overnighter of the 2018 season! I enter Desolation Wilderness from the Loon Lake trailhead for the first time in 25 years and spend a couple of nights at Rockbound Lake - taking a day hike to the Rubicon Reservoir and trying out some new equipment.

This is my next backpacking for this 69 year old hiker. You really nail it for advanced aged hikers. Thanks for sharing it all!

I'm feeling old these days at 56 - Hope I'm still doing it at 69!

Rock bound lake is the coldest lake in desolation I have jumped in! Great video!

Hey that was great!! Excellent video!! Have not been to Loon lake in quite awhile....I have not done any hiking in quite awhile either. Last hike I took was from Fallen Leaf lake up to Tallac and back. Very nice to see some of the beautiful Sierra. Thanks

That little brown mountain to your right as you climb up from Loon Lake is called Brown Mountain. According to one of the old guide books by Robert Wood or Jeff Schaffer, it's the northern terminus of the Crystal Range.

I can't believe that you watched two of my videos today - I hope whatever has you bedridden clears soon :-)

I have seen most of your videos but the timing of comments doesn't always correlate with the time of the watching. Sometimes I'm inspired to comment long after the viewing. I hope that I'm adding, not detracting and that the additional comments will help generate more views for your channel.

Hey man. Thanks for the great video. I messaged you earlier this year and again wanted to thank you for taking me bak to all the places I used to hike when I lived in the US. Love the Philippines but the hiking is somewhat dangerous because there a bout 4 different breeds of Cobra here and that is the only snake that terrifies me so Im content to watch your videos. Peace

I didn't feel at all young after that last hike. It took me several days to recover and I'ma little intimidated now. PLUS temps are just too high - I'm waiting for things to cool just a bit. Hoping to do LOTS of late season hiking. Thanks for checking up on me :-)

having made several trips to loon lake over alternating years, a group of us stayed at pleasant (not valley) campground (a boat-in, 'primitive' site...lots of nice, 'legal' sites, but many established, 'illegal' ones too)...made day hikes up to buck island lake and environs...spider lake was quarantined for a couple years for high ecoli presence (the grounds around the lake were covered with tp blossoms)...i suppose it's necessary, but disappointing to hear that parking fees are being charged...do you know if that applies to other dv areas?...hopefully not...i just turned 70 and, while plagued by shin splints and foot problems, i've been taking evening walks to prepare to return to those hills calling my name...btw, if you know of any remedies to alleviate the pains in my shins (dr's don't seem to know what to prescribe...nsaids aren't helping any...anyway, keep putting out these vids, and, maybe we'll meet somewhere on the trail...
