Ócum an Phríosúin - LYRICS + Translation
Tom Neaine Choilm Ó Lochlainn wrote this autobiographical song: he was caught making poitín (alcohol made illicitly) and sent to prison, doing hard labour picking oakum (old rope torn apart. It was slow, painful work).
He amused himself by composing the song Ócum an Phríosúin.

Dónal agus Mórag - LYRICS + Translation
Переглядів 220 тис.5 років тому
Dónal agus Mórag is a pretty famous wedding song and there are many different versions in both Irish and Scottish Gaelic. This version by Altan is from Rathlin Island (off the coast of Co. Antrim) the first two verses of which survived the death of the dialect on the Island to be published in Mary Campbell's "Rathlin Stories" (1936). Proinsias Ó Maonaigh, the father of Altan's Mairéad Ní Mhaona...

Amhrán na Leabhar (Song of the Books) - LYRICS + Translation
Переглядів 923 тис.5 років тому
also known as Cuan Bhéil Inse or Song of the Books, Amhrán na Leabhar is a famous 'traditional epic' written by Kerry poet Tomás Rua Ó Súilleabháin (1785-1848). Under British rule the Irish language went into decline as it was banned out of public life (schools, courts etc), and children were taught through English. However, illegal secret schools known as hedge-schools were set up for Catholic...

IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW THIS SONG I know it's a bit... unconventional (and the quality is poor), but it's Ireland's favourite Christmas song, probably ever! The original masterpiece by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl is literally a classic. Bold Doherty - LYRICS - Dervish
Переглядів 195 тис.5 років тому
'Don't be bold' in Ireland means 'don't be naughty / a back-talking, misbehaving, cocky idiot.' So calling him Bold Doherty isn't really a compliment :) naggin (or nagan, or nagin, or however you spell it) is Irish slang for a small bottle of alcoholic spirits, usually 200ml. 2:06 it may be '... about it in Cant'. Shelta (or Cant) is the language spoken by Irish Travellers (the two tinkers). It...
The Maid on the Shore - LYRICS - Solas

As the song comes to us, it is the bouncing ballad of a girl too smart for a lecherous sea captain. But a scrap of the ballad hints at something sinister behind the gay recital. For there, the fair maid is either a selkie or a mermaid. Performed by Solas Album: Sunny Spells and Scattered Showers (1997)

This Irish children's song is a bright example of port a' bhéil (mouth music) in other words, a merry nonsense :) A currach is a type of Irish boat with a wooden frame, over which animal skins or hides were once stretched, though now canvas is more usual. The woman of the song returning as a liberator, Gráinne Mhaol (sometimes known as Grace O'Malley) was chieftain of the Ó Máille clan in the west of Ireland. She is a well-known historical figure in 16th-century Irish history, and is sometimes known as 'The Sea Queen of Connacht', one of the most famous female pirates of all time. In a nutshell, in 1578 Gráinne Mhaol (whose name was already pret...
Máire Mhór - LYRICS + Translation
Переглядів 259 тис.5 років тому
Irish traditional song. Cathy Jordan (lead singer with Dervish) refers to Big Máire / Máire Mhór as 'someone who runs out on the man as soon as the whiskey's gone.' 1:40 it would literally go: 'with nothing on her bráid but the carter's coat.' The word 'bráid' means (in this particular case) neck and breast, bust. That is to say she's not completely naked underneath, she's wearing a low-cut dre...

I lived n Dublin for most of the 70’s. I saw Alan Stivel at either the Olympia or the National Stadium, I forget. I fell hard for Rene Werner who played the fiddle. I still have a crush on him. I fell in love with Breton music that night.

The English version of this song was modified to make rhymes, but in doing so it loses most of the meaning and impact of the original lyrics translated here. The OG lyrics, as the singer mentioned in a live show, were inspired by a real experience she had as a little girl, when she actually got lost at night in the mist. Keep that in mind while reading the translation here... looking at it from the perspective of a lost little girl trying to find her way home through a misty night... brrrr, the impact is certainly a lot different.
