So the part about people minding their own business is meant to be somewhat ironic.

I'd say this song has more of a resignated attitude to it. It sounds more like "none cares for me and I care for noone, I just vegetate and everyone around me does so" this song basically describes total indifference from you but also towards you, does it?

Singing is amazing, just a quick note to other Irish singers who were raised through English and want to sing songs in Irish, spend some time listening to RnaG to familiarise yourselves with the phonetics of the language because most of your teachers will have ignored this aspect of the language. The same goes to many otherwise fluent Gaelscoil students.
The singer in the first line of the song pronounces 'chuaigh' as 'kuag' and 'chun' as 'kun', and the same with every other 'ch' in the song being pronounced as 'k'.
Just had to point that out because it's one of many such common mistakes outside the Gaeltachts that a lot of people don't even know it's incorrect.
She also uses English r's in place of Irish ones, r's next to an i or e should be slender. And same with all the other consonants.

    • @nolansheridan196
      @nolansheridan196 4 роки тому +17

@@stephensalzano5661 I think a big difference between dh (as in dia dhuit) and ch like chailin is that the ch tends to elongate the sound a bit. Dh doesn't extend past the time allotted to the regular d, where has ch makes kind of a longer slur of "hyach" into it.

@@stephensalzano5661 😁 it really tripped me up a lot when I was learning Irish. The singer Síbeal is really great at articulating the different consonant changes. But also remember that every region of Ireland pronounces things a little differently. They won't pronounce daoibh quite the same in Ulster as they will in Donegal

@@stephensalzano5661 Yes the dh is also a gutteral sound, kind of like a gargled g. Except remember when a consonant is beside an i or an e it is the slender version of that consonant.
Dhíol = slender = yeeol. Because the slender dh and gh are 'yeu' sounds instead of the gutteral/gargle one.

Ah yes! Musician here, it's not a modulation at the end of the last verse, the lower singers just resolve higher within the key than they have most of the other times! A modulation would be a changing of the key, typically close by higher or lower, like you can see in a lot of gospel music or pop music, when they're trying to keep the energy of the song and the energy in the audience! Má shíním seal uaire faoi chrann a dhéanamh só
Ó cad é sin do'n té sin nach mbaineann sin dó
Má théimse chuig airnéal is rince is spórt
Chuig aonach is rásaí 's gach cruinniú den tsórt
Má chím daoine súgach is má bhím súgach leo
Ó cad é sin do'n té sin nach mbaineann sin dó
Má chím daoine súgach is má bhím súgach leo
Ó cad é sin do'n té sin nach mbaineann sin dó
Deir daoine go bhfuil mé gan rath 's gan dóigh
Gan earra gan éadach gan bólacht ná stór
Má tá mise sásta mó chónaí i gcró
Ó cad é sin do'n té sin nach mbaineann sin dó
Má tá mise sásta mó chónaí i gcró
Ó cad é sin do'n té sin nach mbaineann sin dó
    (Translation)
    What's it to anyone?
I went to the fair and I sold my cow
For five pounds of silver and a golden guinnea
If I drink the money and if I spend the gold
Oh what does it matter to those it doesn't concern
If I drink the money and if I spend the gold
Oh what does it matter to those it doesn't concern
If I go to the thick woods to gather berries or nuts
Take apples from the branches or become a cowherd
If I stretch out under a tree for an hour to do it
Oh what does it matter to those it doesn't concern
If I stretch out under a tree for an hour to do it
Oh what does it matter to those it doesn't concern
If I go to night-visiting and dance and have fun
To a fair and races and everything like that
If I see tipsy people and if I'm tipsy with them
Oh what does it matter to those it doesn't concern
If I see tipsy people and if I'm tipsy with them
Oh what does it matter to those it doesn't concern
People say that I'm good for nothing and a wastrel
Without goods without clothes, without kith or kine
If I'm happy with living in a shack
Oh what does it matter to those it doesn't concern
If I'm happy with living in a shack
Oh what does it matter to those it doesn't concern

This isn't Gaelic, it's Irish. Gaelic is the anglicized word for Gàidhlig. You can tell which language it is by the accents, or fada used above some vowels. á, é, í, ó, ú is Irish/Gaeilge. à, è, ì, ò, ù is Scottish Gaelic/Gàidhlig. Benny Lewis has some fairly easy to follow videos here on youtube explaining the basics of Irish to help you get started.
