Máire Mhór - LYRICS + Translation
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2018
- Irish traditional song.
Cathy Jordan (lead singer with Dervish) refers to Big Máire / Máire Mhór as 'someone who runs out on the man as soon as the whiskey's gone.'
1:40 it would literally go: 'with nothing on her bráid but the carter's coat.'
The word 'bráid' means (in this particular case) neck and breast, bust. That is to say she's not completely naked underneath, she's wearing a low-cut dress :)
As requested by Scarlett Sladek :)
Performed by Bua
Album: Live At Martyrs' (2006)
*Me:* Ooh another Irish song in my recommendations, I wonder what this one's about!
*Narrator:* I am an adulterer with multiple lovers, and if my favorite one doesn't do as she promised she can drown!
*Me:* ... Ah...
I feel like it's about boats
@@applesong01 I think it’s that he asked for a boat. But she was probably not a strong swimmer. She hesitates, which made him angry. Which is probably why he said that.
I don’t know the real story. Just my best guess.

The stories told in Irish song lyrics do not typically have particularly joyous themes.
Thicc chicks are life, as per the ancients.
Learning irish is hard but these songs make it alot better thank you!
Absofeckinlutely 🤘
'If you don't come as you promised, may you be drowned on the shore.' HAHA, well thank you verry much. I am that kind of person that if i have a date with a friend, i change my mind last minute. Never had that respond to my last minute change, even tho i do deserve it.
BIG mood pffffff
Rigth like i somewhat introvert and this make me scared and give me anxiety
Then stop doing it.
"Someone who runs out on the man as soon as the whiskey's gone." I think I know this chick.
I'm finding the language cool as can be!!
it's super Mac Cumhaill lolol

First the lady from Bean Phaidin, and then this guy? Geez, what's with the Irish and writing love songs about terrifying people?
Also, I wonder how Máire feels about being called "big".
Ocareening The same thing that came to my mind!!! It’s absolutely terrifying how they express their love 😂
I assumed it also means great or something- I think I've seen that word used to mean great.
I wouldn't be surprised if Maire Mhor is a figure of speech, and means Big [breasted] Mary.

He has two other girlfriends, I wonder why she's ignoring him!
Hmm, but it sounds like he´s a sailor so she wouldn´t know if he has a girl in some other town. And while him being a sailor would be a good enough reason to ignore him (that´s one dangerous job right there) I think this girl in particular is supposed to be more interested in the booze than finding a husband.
@@Regina316 so they're both shallow and perfect for each other?
@@NiennaFan1 I wouldn´t really say that. She´s just this figure that comes across as looking for fun and not much else. And the poor guy´s fallen for her hard. It´s hard to say, she may even be some kind of Fey for all I know! :D
@@Regina316 fair, i still think that means they deserve each other
I'm so glad I came back to this channel.

That sounds so beautiful! :)
I LOVE BUA
Thank you thank you thank you!
Scarlett Sladek You love song of the sea too? Cool so do I.
It's one of my favorite movies!! It's what led me to this channel in the first place :)
Scarlett Sladek Same kind of I think I started loving Irish music when I started listening to English folk songs I also love Scots Gaelic❤️ to me song of the sea is a nice film to make you a little happier and less anxious.
Scarlett Sladek Have you seen the breadwinner? That’s by the same man who created song of the sea. And are you excited for wolfwalkers? There’s a trailer you could watch on UA-cam it hasn’t been said when it will be released it’s another great film on Irish mythology also by Tomm Moore.
I AM SO HYPED FOR WOLFWALKERS I NEED IT IN MY LIFE RIGHT NOW!! I haven't seen breadwinner though
Could you translate “Biodhe an Deoch seo ‘n Laimh Mo Ruin” by Julie Fowlis? And “Tha Caolas Eadar Mi’ s Iain?” Also by her. And “Song of tomorrow”, by Celtic Legend? If you did that especially that would be awesome 👏🏾 😎🤗 whenever I try to search up lyrics online I never find anything and there’s some websites where people argue so much about the language spoken it’s annoying. It would be nice if someone could tell what the words and language are it seems so ancient and beautiful ✨ if doing all three songs is too much I’m sorry you don’t have to do the Scots Gaelic ones if you don’t want to.
“Biodhe an Deoch seo ‘n Laimh Mo Ruin” by Julie Fowlis:
Whether he or the others were drinking
There would still be plenty on the table
The drink would be in my love's hand
Here's a health to the chief
The drink would be in my love's hand
A boat was seen on the waves
And the red hand at the helm
I saw it passing through the straits
With a clump of heather on the sail-yard
You who saw her out at sea
Bless the fair ship and her crew
Bless her high masts and her equipment
Her moorings and her sails
Though I am here in Coll
I long to go to Rhum
And from there to Uist
Were I to get my wish
I copied this from: www.celticlyricscorner.net/fowlis/biodh.htm
Maydaymain Oh thanks 🙂 for that maybe I’ll tell her to take it off her list and choose another song. I didn’t even check to see that there were English translated lyrics from her album.
This tune sounds a lot like The well by Omnia. Like them both ;)
There's a lullaby in Manx, I believe, called "Ushag Veg Rey". (Sorry if I spelled that wrong.) Could you possibly try that when you have the time? Thanks!
P.S. If that's too hard, maybe "Sonnenreigen" by Faun.
Books and Glasses there is a version I like : ua-cam.com/video/QYQmpT5QILM/v-deo.html

Our people will vanish from the earth in a few short years. This was our music. Wake up.
I agree with you brother. However, being angry will not help you. We are passing through the cycle that Ibn Haldun first wrote about in the Middle Ages
www.mindattic.org/muqaddimah/
and then Gustav LeBon discussed much later and then Oswald Spengler also discussed.

We are the last men of the west. Stand firm. Live and die like a man. Take part in your culture. You cant change history. You cant avoid fate. You can only be an exemplar of what we were like the lonely roman guard in Pompeii who drowned in the ash but never abandoned his post. Hail Woden! Long Live Death!

Does "óró" actually mean anything? Or is this some word that sounds good in songs, like "oh" or "hey"?
Its just like saying "way hey" or "hey ho" in an english song.
It’s like “hey” in English but in Gaelige
There’s one song I love by Capercaillie yet I cannot find the lyrics anywhere: the title is ‘Ailein Duinn Nach Till Thu An Toabh-Seo’.
Grace Nimlothiel you mean the song " dark haired Allan?"
Timothy Locklear no, that one I know quite well for it is one of my favourites. This one mentions a dark haired Allen but has very different lyrics. I tried googling it but all that would come up was ‘Ailein Duinn’.
Grace Nimlothiel ugh I know exactly how that feels. Hope you eventually find it.😊 Surprised to find another person who likes it tho 🤗 I had it on an album and it was the first song that got me interested in slow Gaelic music. But I played it once too often and turned certain siblings off Celtic forever 🤣
Grace Nimlothiel Maybe google translate could help you.
Timothy Locklear yeah my friends think I’m really weird for not liking pop music but truth be told I can’t stand it. I adore Celtic music and Capercaillie
Listen to a few minutes before you sleep it will wash over you and stick that's how you learrn
Love this song, but I prefer ver. from TG4 chanel =)
I wish I could speak the language, but it looks VERY difficult. To me it sounds like, "do you want to go to war", haha.
Big Mary 😂😂😂
man, Meiri gets around, doesn't she?
Lol
Anyone know anywhere I can find the chords? Google is turning up nothing
Am I hearing a hurdy gurdy or a bagpipe? The world may never know
Uillain pipes I'd say, or in English elbow pipes, a form of bagpipe, frequently played in Irish music.
How can you drown on the shore, which usually refers to land not water?
tide coming in i guess?
Go raibh maith agat!
Dang Galway is getting lively
Lots of mistakes in the pronunciation :/ The singer speaks good Irish for being an American, of course, but you hear in every line that he's not a native Irish speakers
(Especially all the 'ch' he pronounces as /k/)
I swear I thought about you when it came down to choosing between this version and Cathy Jordan's 😂
How is the 'ch' supposed to be pronounced?
Like the german ch. It's not a fucking k. It's a aspired h
@@90geekgirl06 in ipa it's an [x] You can Listen on this website for example www.ipachart.com/ if you go to the pulmonic consonants chart and click on the x. It's like a mix of the German R and an H I guess 😅
@@donatiuspynethz1296 as a spanish learning gaeilge, i think its harder than german's h, id say its more like a spanish's j
Anyone one know name of the tune?
This guy needs to make up his mind. You can't have every woman that you want! AND you CAN'T just go around saying "If you don't come then I hope you drownd." I mean WHO RAISED YOU! Also if a woman isn't talking to you SHE DOSN'T LIKE YOU! Regardless of all of this, I love this song. One month later: Ok, so I just read what this song is about. Sorryish for getting mad at you mister guy who is saying "I hope you drownd" BUT Big Máire you CAN'T just go running out on a man who ran out of whiskey! If you want whiskey then go to a bar! There's plenty of men and whiskey there to go around! ALSO, PUT SOME CLOTHES ON! TINY DRESSES DON'T COUNT! This song is very messed up, but I still love this song.
Sometimes women couldn't hold their own money. It was a different time.
See see the ancients themselves believe thicc women saves lives!
I’m just reading it wrong I know but still I laugh at the whole song since it kind of gives me a view on how people date each other back then
