  • IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW THIS SONG
I know it's a bit... unconventional (and the quality is poor), but it's Ireland's favourite Christmas song, probably ever!
The original masterpiece by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl is literally a classic.
Original song: • The Pogues - Fairytal...
Performed in Irish by Fred McCluskey, Ger Maher & Ailbhe Hession for TG4

My Gaelic speaking grandparents left the Highlands and arrived in Manhattan about 1920. They were in love but they were in service to the Laird of Butte , who forbid them to forbid to marry. So, Donald and Eileen left their employ and sailed for the new world. This song makes me think of the difficulties they must have endured when two naive Gaelic speaking newlyweds arrived in the harsh bustling city streets of New York.

Thanks for your touching, personal story. Irish, the appearance of the Pogues original version coincided with my first visit to my paternal relations in NY/NJ whose, predecessors had emigrated to the US in successive generations from the mid-19th Century to the 1920's. Thus my own attachment to this song. Being sung in Irish - to me, as a lifelong Gaelgeóir, is an added bonus. PS Having been exposed quite a bit to Ulster Irish, my Irish has the same origins as your grandparents; google "Kingdom of Dal Ríada" - a kingdom that encompassed east Ulster and Western Scotland. Mar sin Leibh! ('Bye - as your grandparents have said it ("sin" pronounced "shin" - as in Sinn Féin, but we won't to there.

I start singing the English version: night’s getting good.
I start singing the Gaelic version (I don’t speak Gaelic): time to go to bed, and anybody who doesn’t let me is braver than I’ll ever be.
