When I was younger I used to see people sitting in pubs tapping their foot along to a trad singer and always thought they needed to get a tv or the internet. As my Irish has gotten better and I can understand songs like this without needing to translate anything, I totally get it. Its unlike anything I have heard in English. Close your eyes and sing along in your head and the rhymes of the words, the flow of them, the singing, the meaning, they all flow into one. Its hypnotic. I can understand why the fitzgeralds gave up their language in favour of irish, and why the poets of old were held in such high regard, can only imagine how beautiful some of their poems/songs must have been.

The woman who is singing is actually talking about a young man who went to France to join the "Irish Brigade" which was a French unit made up of Irishmen who fled to France to join the French Army. During the period of Jacobite Rebellions after the English Civil War, many young rebels from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales traveled to France to join the French Army to fight the English on various battlefields of Europe throughout the early eighteenth Century.
the Hanoverian Kings of England (Current British Royal Family) and the English Lords were constantly engaged against Scottish Highlanders, Irish rebels, and most of the common people of Britain who supported the Stuart Kings. Many joined the French Army believing that when Charles Edward Stuart would come of age, that he would return to Britain with a French Army at his back to take back the British Crown.
In the final rebellion of 1745 the French sent most of these Irish and Scottish based units to help support the Highland Army. However, during the Battle of Culloden, after a valiant last stand, the Irish regiments were wiped-out completely, with every last man killed by the British Army. Afterward King Louis took no more Irish or Scots into his Army, and gave up helping his nephews gain back the British Throne.
It a much more tragic song when you know the fate of the Irish Soldiers who fought in those regiments.

I have loved traditional Irish music since its revival in the 1970s.
It seemed to throb with the pathos of the beleaguered remnant of the Celtic world. I sought out translations of them and realized that often they were of an age so remote that they were full of tales of druidic shape shifting. Sometimes even in translation that Gaelic is entirely metaphor.
The largest ethic origin in Wisconsin is Irish. In 1972 I played some of the music for my then aged grandfather. He laughed. He recalled the Irish settlers from the hills above the flatlands along Lake Michigan driving in silence their herds to the pig fair and recalled them drunk as lords singing dancing to the pipes, fiddles and drums on the return trip. He loved it.
I heard several generations of Dega and Clanad veterans play at Irish Fest in Milwaukee Wisconsin in 2016 shortly after the death of an uncle a long time member of Clanad. They sang his favorite tune, Harry's Song to Irish harp, fiddle, penny whistle, bodran and the small pipes. It was stunningly beautiful and so heartfelt that much of the audience was in tears. Then it was off to the sports bar on the festival grounds to watch video of the local Hurley club while listening to a trio of musicians playing tunes considerably more stiringly lively than the slow sweet airs I so love. Yet they fit perfectly with the video of a game as much like meley combat as you would want see. Ah the Irish.

    Chorus
    Siúil, siúil, siúil a rún

    そっと静かに出て行って
    ドアまで行ったら 私を連れて逃げて
    どうぞご無事で 愛しい人よ
I'll sell my rod, I'll sell my reel
I'll sell my only spinning wheel
To buy my love a sword of steel
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
    糸巻き棒も糸巻きも 糸車も売るわ
    愛しい人に鋼の剣を買うために
I'll dye my petticoats, I'll dye them red
And round the world I'll beg my bread
Until my parents shall wish me dead
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán

She has a voice that seems to float into eternity. At times in my life of sorrow and perturbation, I’ve turned to their music for solace, because it takes me to a beautiful place, a place where my heart would wish to be.

The proof is in live performance, and there wasn’t anything to tell the listener that this even _was_ a live performance, until the very end. Clannad hasn’t been one of my favorite Irish groups, which is something I can’t explain and I won’t attempt to justify. I keep revisiting certain groups from time to time, keeping an open mind. Personal taste is an alchemy in the heart, and if a sound doesn’t fit, it doesn’t, but this song hit whang! In the gold. Beautifully expressed lyrics, tightly played, with difficult, darkly shaded vocal harmonies (my favorite) coming out of nowhere and leaving. Very moving!

I stumbled across this beautiful song and I've listened to it often enough that I actually sing it half way decently. It's beautiful and tragic. As sad as it is, it's so calming that I sing it to myself in the evening while making my tea.

Honestly feeling nostalgic about going into looking for songs that I remembered from choir the past years and man this one specifically was some of my favorites especially when you have the all guy and girl parts together makes it sound even more tragic and sad. I’m glad I came across this it’s quite nice

my Dads side is Irish and i'm also writing on the language of the Irish and how its slowly dying out presenting in a form of an archive for one of my papers at university , i myself live in England but my family are Irish and Scottish , I was never told about the language or the history and its sad , so i have decided to connect to this part of my heritage(Irish) and its so beautiful and inspiring .

Someday, i want to attend college in Ireland and learn the language of my ancestors... My great grandfather was a stowaway on a cargo ship from ireland, and my grandfather still had his irish voice, just a little. I loved him so much, even though I only knew him the first 7 years of my life. His story of his father hiding in an empty rum barrel fascinated me, and Irish culture is beloved among my family.
I'm so Irish that my great granda hid in a barrel of alcohol to get to America. Allegedly, he drank what was left in it.
