Ócum an Phríosúin - LYRICS + Translation

- Опубліковано 20 лют 2019
- Tom Neaine Choilm Ó Lochlainn wrote this autobiographical song: he was caught making poitín (alcohol made illicitly) and sent to prison, doing hard labour picking oakum (old rope torn apart. It was slow, painful work).
He amused himself by composing the song Ócum an Phríosúin.
Performed by: Líadan
Album: Casadh na Taoide (2009)
I, a linguist: "French probably has the most confusing pronunciation for new students, since the last half of the word is rarely pronounced."
Irish Gaelic: "hold ma guinness"
I agree as a Breton (French)
Scots Gaelic: "pffft! Irish?" eg ceili vs ceilidh, oiche ve oidhche LOL
@@mhicnanolc Yeah, that was the Irish spelling until I'm going to says the 50s-ish. They simplified.
Out of curiosity do you know if those sounds are pronounced in Scottish Gaelic? Confusingly, you have spellings that agree with some dialects and not others in Ireland....
@@mhicnanolc Welsh: *chuckles*
Hold my Polish Tyskie beer and repeat with me 'Chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie, chrząszcza brzmiącego w trzcinie, chrząszczu brzmiącego w trzcinie... ' :)
If anyone wants to learn the lyrics but has trouble with the pronunciation, I recommend playing the video at .5 or .75 speed. Really helps!
thanks, i really wist to learn galeic.....maibe in future

@coinínbán In Irish God is Dé or Dia depending on grammatical context.
Unless you meant Scottish Gaelic in which case I'm not sure.
Historical note: the Quakers were behind prison reform in 18th/19th century Britain (and, of course, at that stage, Ireland was part of Britain). Their reforms were intended to (a) make the penal system less barbaric and (b) rehabilitate prisoners. Unfortunately "well meaning" does not always lead to good outcomes and this was one of those times.
Their reforms included keeping prisoners as isolated as possible. That is probably where the idea of each prisoner alone in his or her cell comes from. They also had the idea that labour would lead prisoners to become useful members of society, after all, the devil finds work for idle hands. What they didn't realise (since I think they were still pretty much stuck in the idea of prison being thoroughly punitive) was that giving people completely pointless jobs probably wasn't a great idea. In some ways, picking oakum wasn't the worst - at least ships actually needed it, although it was hard on the hands. I think the prize for the most useless soul-destroying task goes to getting a prisoner to shift a pile of rocks from one side of the yard to the other and then, when they have finished the task, they get told to shift the rocks back to where they were originally.
On Sundays, the prisoners were allowed to go to a church service in the prison chapel but they had to wear a mask over their faces so that even this possibility of human contact was curtailed.
They were fed on bread, porridge and cabbage soup. That is not an adequate diet for anyone long term. Based on what I've seen on "Time Team" and "Who do you think you are?" my impression is that unless you were young and healthy, any prison sentence of more than about 6 months had a pretty good chance of translating into a death sentence, if not while you were serving it, then in the year or two after you were released.
Quakers in the US were behind similar penal reforms there in the 1800s. This may be where the current US prediliction for keeping prisoners in solitary confinement has its roots, currently there are over 80,000 inmates held in solitary, some of them have been there for decades.
Treadmills use to be toture and used for energy
At Spike Island (where the protagonist of this song was likely imprisoned) the prisoners would be woke at the crack of dawn and told to get two buckets of water from one end of the island, bring it to the other side, dump it, and repeat.
@@CopperBeech777 it really is an evil & barbaric practice
@@witchypoo7353 I agree! Are you aware of the Angola 3? They spent 43 years in solitary confinement in Louisiana.

Irish isn't dying as an irish person i know this it's had a huge revival
@@theguy4429 The Ghaeltacht regions have shrunk to less than half what they were a decade ago... if we don't act now, this language may eventually be forgotten.
@@fabplays6559 very "endangered" Irish has 8,068 native speakers everyone in Ireland is required to learn it in school so i don't think it's going to die soon.
I walk the earth carrying a good mixture of Irish, Scot, and Manx. I'm especially proud of my Manx. The United Nations pronounced Manx Gaelic dead. The Manx themselves said to the UN, "No it isn't". Now they are resurrecting their language and even have schools taught in that language only.
This was one of the first irish songs I had heard on your channel, and it was one of the ones that stuck with me the most... So after a year of daily basic Irish lessons and a LOT of replaying the song I finally managed to learn it by heart!! I can understand words here and there and I hope to come to a point where I can understand it fully! Go raibh maith agat Maire for making videos like this, I hope you will release some more!💕
Everything here is marvelous! The singer, the melody and the lyrics! I wish i knew irish gaelic :(
There's a Duolingo if you want to pick up some simple proficiency...
Duolingo is good for all of us without the money to go to Ireland. The best way to learn Gaeilge (the Irish language) is by being taught by a native speaker of the wonderful language.

I love Gaelic music but wish there were some Welsh folk songs on here. Every child can sing calon lan and sosban fach (The latter usually bilingually!). I'd love to see some in the Bardic tradition.
It's Gaeilge actually if you want to get technical

This is such a good channel. Pleaese don't stop posting. Hope you're well.
I keep coming back to this channel, so many great songs
Go raibh maith agat, Maire!
I wish you would come back, you're a safe haven for people like me who don't speak/understand even a little bit of Irish or Scottish yet are very interested in learning more about it and the history and culture behind it. Please continue doing what you're doing.
I wish to learn Irish someday and i always come back to this channel whenever i feel this unexplainable urge in my soul to connect with the language and the culture. Thank you for providing me with a place where I can indulge in that urge and learn more about myself and the deep, rich culture of the people.
My grandma (moms mom) and her family imagrated from Ireland. I like to listen to songs and music like this to keep in touch with this part of my heritage.
Irish is a fascinating language
I wish,he will come back once upon a time. Really miss him♥️
Simply stunning song and voice. I greatly appreciate the Irish/English words. Táim ag foghlaim Gaeilge.
I think its about a woman who was sent to prison for making poitin from barley juice. Making oakum (boat seam stuffing) by picking apart tough old ropes was one the main jobs prisoners and people in work houses had to do.
Hahahaha hahahaha jesus wept this is funny
It was actually a man but yeah
@BellaRose It didn't say what it was about 10 months ago. That info has been added since I last played this video.
I just found this channel. But I can’t get over 1 how pretty the songs all are. But also the amazing harmonies
Is anyone willing to write out the phonetics? It’s hard to read without a knowledge of how the language works
This is how I was able to learn it! The Gaelic words are the first line, the pronunciation the second line, and the English translation the third line. I hope this helps, friend!

Wow!! What a great Voice. Never heard from the Lady👍
I feel like when Irish was figuring out how to spell itself with letters, it could have chosen better letters.
I'm Irish and I agree😀
Eh it's just different, and actually quite logical when you get used to it. There are regional variations in pronunciation like all languages but they are consistent within themselves. I think it's much easier to read Irish than English because English saw phonetics and was like 'nah thanks'.
Gaelic spelling actually makes a lot of sense when you get used to the rules. It's just that it's a different language, not built for the English alphabet.
@Birb Birbington Yeah true, but the joke still stands.
Gaelic was never meant to be a written language at all tho, the first scribes to translate it into text were English monks in the 12th century who simply put letters and accent marks where they felt they worked best and basically just rolled with it
