The Maid on the Shore - LYRICS - Solas

- As the song comes to us, it is the bouncing ballad of a girl too smart for a lecherous sea captain. But a scrap of the ballad hints at something sinister behind the gay recital. For there, the fair maid is either a selkie or a mermaid.

Maid: I'm gonna do what's called a pro-gamer move.
I swear to God, this channel added years to my lifespan.

The captain: "I shall die, I shall die if I can't have that maid on the shore, shore, shore"
Me: Then perish.
The girl: oh okay, but first take a little nap, there's a good fella...hehehe...I'll teach you to try and take what's not yours...!
If he dies, he dies...
JAJAJA yes.
The maid= wlw
@@marla_singing she*** the captain is a woman /nm
All the stories of selkies that I know involve a human kidnapping them, so I imagine this was the same. I interpret the “after many persuasions” as being code for this, and it makes the story be about a poor seal girl who got kidnapped and managed to escape from her captors with all their money. It makes it way happier.
Oh. I just realized that that interpretation of it makes the line “he invited her down to his cabin below” have some rapey tones to it. Yikes.
Well, that makes her eventual victory even more heroic.

I imagined that they kidnapped her but left her coat behind on the shore.
@@thepip3599 Yes, he will die if he can't "have" that maid on the shore. Does her consent matter? Apparently not. He offers to pay his sailors to "persuade" her, and does NOT offer to share his wealth with her. This pirate mermaid or selkie has the last laugh, however. (One hopes they learn to invite rather than kidnap next time. )
Heard many versions now, this is the best. The total music sounds " woven". No flaws, a fine tapestry
What are the other versions??
@@novepipps Stan Rogers and Figgy Duff both have fantastic renditions of this song.
When I first discovered this song in my teenage years, I wept because such beautiful music existed. Karan Casey's voice is a unique gift to humanity.
It was one of those moments when something so fine about the world moves you deeply yet feels so out of reach.
Finally, this song is getting the recognition it deserves. Been listening to this beauty since 2008 when I discovered it in the Putumayo album, Celtic Tides. To date, it's still one of the best Putumayo tracks I've listened to and I've listened to hundreds!
Same that CD was my childhood!
I’m in despair-o
That's so sad Bard sing Despacit-O
This is one maid who is immune to The Implication.
If anyone is like me and can't place where else they heard the melody at the start, it was sampled by Timbaland for "All y'all" and then by Childish Gambino for "All Y'all".
The plot twist is the seemingly innocent maid on the shore techically turned out being a pirate.
The ultimate power move
A true top 😂👌
I could recognize Karan's voice anywhere. This is absolutely beautiful.
Live like the fair maid on the shore. Forget men, GET PAID!!!
This is the kind of music Corpse Husband listens to when he needs cheering up 🤣😌
I like it
The SOLAS channel lists this as The Made on the Shore....
Thanks for a shareable posting ❤

Don't forget to tell them about the sick burns too!
Dont forget her fair hair, and her beauty, and that booty

Did not hear this song before. A beautiful legend- song done this way.
I remember singing this song all the time!!!
I would love to see a Solas reunion of Seamus, Winn, Mick, John, Eamonn, and Karen. Best Celtic band since the Bothy Band, or Planxty.
I believe the singer is our own Karen Casey, singing with Solas.
I frist heard this song Newfie style, due to my Newfie Heritage. But that's not odd as alot of Newfies have Irish/Scottish heritage.
Good for her
Omg that’s so sad-o
Alexa play Despacito
Wonderful, both Solas, and Karan Casey with a voice in her prime.
Very Very Beautiful Music
This makes me think of kya from where the crawdads sing 🥺💖
I love the tune! Great song!
Amazing😊
What a catchy and beautiful song :-)
Good song
I ain't gon' lie... I discovered this song through the Timbaland and Magoo "All y'all" sample. It was 2001 I guess.
So good :)
Listening from Nepal.
Sublime 💚💚💚
This could be the theme song of Irish Pirate Queen Grainne Mhaol (Grace O’Malley)
Nothing will ever replace The Black Rose's rendition for me... But this is damn good.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED FOR ST PATTYS DAY!!!!!!!!
Nice voice

"This is the one and all"
"Fine fare o" huh... She took their food too?
I assumed clothes and plates
Oh Mi Gosh She Did
I alway thought it was "wares", all their trading goods.
@@dustyrose192 probably, but there's something about the image of her rowing away with the Captain's lunch that just makes me laugh.
good for her.
So this is the sample from timberlands all y'all,,,
What a girl boss 🥰🥰🥰
You know Timbaland sent you here
Producer1998 facts!!!
Stan Rogers, actually.

Her taking all the food reminds me of certain book character...
Pretty hilarious. I think this is English or Scottish as Irish girls unlikely to be so nefarious! Joking, of course!
Neither, it's Newfie.
Timbaland&Magoo-All y'all!!!
Timberland is a genius

So... its basically marriage?
Underrated comment
So, they had met before?
The captain was looking to **** the maid who knows lol
I think the Maiden was fae creature.
this either the ace or lesbian theme song
merrow, i think
@@a-c6586 What is a merrow?
@@TheLicheQueen irish mermaid. in some myths they can leave the water in human form with a magical red cap. they're pretty cool, there are a lot of stories on them on sites that archive old myths if you wanna read.
@@a-c6586 Awesome thanks
What's the genre of this music?
Folk music.
Scottish folk music.
@@splehcar Solas are Irish. How is it Scottish?
@@washerdryer3466 Didn't realize band is Irish. First heard/saw this song video via a music mix list my sister showed me; she's heavy into Scots folk music and this song was on it. So, guess I assumed.
Mm... I just asked her if she realized it was Irish and she says:
Na, I knew it were Irish. It's a damn nice song and a great band so I included it.
There ya go. Just listened again. Me sister's right.
I saw a british movie at tv with the same story but the end wasn't so sad(or funny),the protagonist was a old rich man(a paintings coleccionist).
Instagram dms be like:
Was she a siren?
why was she a robber? why did she needed to be bad 🥺🥺🥺
That's doesn't add up
What will she do with the money and the jewelry on a lonely shore
The song ending has obviously been altered
Maybe she just throw the fake treasure of the board, and stayed as the reall treasure worthy of keeping

Why singing in English the most disgusting language of all
@Emily Barclay english is disgusting
I am just communicating that I don't like it compared to the Celtic languages
@Emily Barclay yes that's exactly what I wanted to say. This language is filthy.
Because it has lost its complexity (like it had in old English) And it's speakers contributed to the extinction of other languages.
I wanna be upset, but the more I think about.... The more I realize that out of all languages it is kinda the worst. I don't know if I feel as strongly as you do, but if I had the choice I definitely wouldn't chose English over Irish or Swahili or... anything else
