I love history and especially broadcasting history. Beginning in the late 1960s I recorded many airchecks and newscasts from the radio as well as assorted audio from television programming, at first on reel-to-reel recorders and later on cassette recorders. As time permits, I will upload these on my channel, as well as other recordings that I've assembled in my collection.

WCBS-AM/CBS RADIO NEWS, NEW YORK, POWER BLACKOUT, JULY 14, 1977
WCBS-AM Radio with Bill Fayen leading up to the 1 a.m. network news. New York City was in the midst of a major power blackout. The network leads with David Jackson (1945-2015) reporting that a U.S. helicopter had gone down in North Korean airspace, but quickly the network, based in New York, experienced technical troubles likely due to the blackout. It briefly goes back to Fayen at WCBS, then resumes with the network. Coverage of the blackout takes over the network newscast, with a continuation of the local situation once it returned to WCBS.

WGNE-AM RADIO NEWS, FEB. 3, 1966 Here was a moment in time: during the early days of the Vietnam War, when radio news reports on anti-war protests were still a thing of the future-especially around military bases, and pop radio stations were largely all in on what was happening in Southeast Asia. WGNE (dubbed “Genie Radio”) in Panama City, Florida was no exception, being close to Tyndall Air Fo...

WILL GEER READING MARK TWAIN, “NIGHT TALK,” WOR-AM, AUG. 30, 1976 In 1976 and 1977 I regularly listened to a fine late-night radio program over WOR-AM (New York) called “Night Talk.” Hosted by radio veteran Bob Maxwell (1924-2002), it featured talking word recordings of classic stories, some read by well-known personalities. This excerpt is from a reading of Mark Twain’s (1835-1910) “The Soundi...

What a treat - thank you for posting this! I discovered WCBS radio by accident on the evening of July 14, 1977 . . . the night of the blackout. A real coincidence! I also enjoyed the racing results from Yonkers Raceway, and I think it was Bob Myer who provided the results. Great memories!

Greetings! Does anyone know what the song is at 0:19?
I tested it through my Shazam app and no results came up. But to my ears it sounds like a few notes playing off the 1967 Spanky and Our Gang tune "Lazy Day." Take a listen and see what you think. ua-cam.com/video/qNAOLYL4DP4/v-deo.html

I found Rich Conaty one Sunday night when he was doing the Big Broadcast from WQEW while DXing way up in Northern New Hampshire’s White Mountains. I was immediately hooked. I learned so much about recordings from the 20’s and 30’s. However, what I loved more than anything was hearing Rich Conaty connecting with me and his audience. It reminded me how boring radio had become especially with the demise of radio personalities in the early 1980’s, tight formats and limited to what they played and the time they were able to connect with the audience. When WQEW changed formats I was very happy when I learned he would return to WFUV. By that time internet radio was in its infancy but I was a devoted listener every Sunday. Remember when Sunday night was “must see television” my Sunday nights was spent listening to The Big Broadcast. In my opinion Mr. Conaty was the last truly great radio personality. I miss you sir.
Your account of how you found and followed Rich Conaty mirrors mine very closely. I also live in northern New Hampshire and discovered Rich when he was WQEW and was delighted to find after 'QEW went Disney to find Conaty back at WFUV, which I could hear online. I hope to put up on my channel a few more Conaty programs I have collected,
What happened on that day?
Please do Mutual News for May 25, 1986 please?
I’d trade today’s 24-hour news channels for just a half hour a day of this machine gun reporting style any day.
Wow this is gold!
I subscribed! I was in my sophomore year of college when you made this recording. My (late) friend, Charles F. Paul (aka "Charlie Paul") played the organ and piano for "Love of Life," "As the World Turns" (which also used a celeste for the two middle breaks and sometimes in the long closing theme), and "The Guiding Light." My (late) organ teacher, Eddie Layton, played the organ for "Where the Heart Is" and "Love is a Many Splendored Thing." He also used to play for "The Secret Storm" (after Charlie Paul left the show), but the version you have on your recording sounds like James Leaffe. Eddie was known to NYC sports fans as being the longtime organist at the home games of the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Eddie told me that he used to purposely play some wrong notes in the theme songs during the dress rehearsals of "Love is a Many Splendored Thing" to make the people in the control room laugh. I think Ashley Miller was playing the "Search for Tomorrow" theme, and that was definitely Paul Taubman playing "The Edge of Night" theme. One of my acting teachers from Weist-Barron, Dwight Weist, announced "Search for Tomorrow" for many years.
Thank you for this fascinating insight into the organ music performed on these classics!
Now I.Y.O., why didn't ABC-TV Network use organ music for its N.Y. City, N.Y.-based Mon.-Fri. daytime serialized drama series in late-1960s/early-1970s?
Late Will Geer, "Waltons" prime time drama series fame on CBS-TV Network died in 1978

I have a question for you, on the official website of The Ed Sullivan Show, they say that Topo Gigio made an appearance that day asking for one last goodnight kiss, could you confirm this for me? I found no record of this on the Internet.
I question whether this is true. My understanding is that except for the farewell remarks I recorded here, that episode aired on June 6, 1971, was a repeat of the show from the previous Feb. 7, at which time it was likely no one knew would be the last aired (as a repeat)

I used to watch Guy Lombardo on New Years Eve with my parents when I was a pre-teen. He was a good musician! An Icon!
"DIMMIT, DAMMIT!"
As a kid of thirteen I listened to Harley's radio show on WITH, it was my introduction to Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Chick Webb etc. What great times. As for Allen Prell, he was a most loveable wildman, his "Uncle Allie's yard sale" was just plain great!
RIP, Charles Osgood. Posting 2-6-24.
I was a high school senior, just 4 months from graduation when this broadcast was made. This was the month the government ended the draft. Still had to register, but less chance of conscription. A year later I enlisted in the United States Air Force. A few years back, I pondered what to do if the draft was still operating. I had resigned myself to either enlist or get drafted. Many of us young men were paying attention to what was going on in SE Asia.
An important study of how radio then had the power of the internet now.During his heyday,Winchell had the power to wreck careers. But there was a consequence for making so many enemies. At his funeral, only his daughter attended.
It's amazing that this record was made 111 years ago as of this post. 😁😁😁😁😁
RIP Charles Osgood (January 8, 1933-January 23, 2024)
Sorry to see this posted today (January 23, 2024): CBS Sunday Morning Award-winning journalist Charles Osgood, who anchored “CBS Sunday Morning” for 22 years and was host of the long-running radio program “The Osgood File,” died Tuesday at home in New Jersey. He was 91.
3:48 amazing how correct Walter Winchell was about the Vietnam war, which we DID inherit from the French.
7:32 25 WPM is fairly brisk for radiotelegraphy, but most commercial operators send at 35 WPM.
I heard the opening and closing sounder when I was in the car with my dad. I am 57 wonderful memories. I cannot though remember what radio station in Cleveland it aired on. I am guessing WERE 1300 AM
I think I recall him in the last minute saying that 1975 wasn't very happy. We watched South Vietnam fall.
The updated sounder heard at the beginning of this newscast was used only for a short time (maybe 6 or 8 weeks at most) in the spring/summer of 1982. I think somebody at Mutual decided it just might have been a bit too dramatic and reverted back to the previous similar sounder used since 1978.
Is Rita still at CBS News ?
Rita is currently based in North Carolina, but radio sites seem to indicate that she is still associated with CBS. She was the first female news anchor on WCBS in New York City beginning five years into their all-news format which began in 1967.
@@mytimemachine I used to have many recordings of CBS News hourly broadcasts. The CBS World News Roundup with Dallas Townshend and Neil Strawser. The World Tonight w Douglas Edwards. Substitute broadcasts w Christopher Glenn , Marlene Sanders, Reid Collins Stephani Shelton and Richard C Hottelet hourly broadcasts w Deborah Potter, Doug Poling Rita Flynn Lee Thornton, George Herman Morton Dean Lesley Stahl Diane Sawyer Ike Pappas, Ed Bradley Susan Spencer Jacqueline Adams Eric Engberg, and many. more. They were destroyed when my house got flooded. Very disappointing. That is what is nice about the internet I can hear those old broadcasts again. Thank You. ☺
Some great broadcast names you list there. Back in the day I was a big CBS News fan--probably knowing it was built on the likes of Murrow, Edwards and Cronkite hooked me to the "Tiffany Network" at that time--quite a stable of on-air talent. I still have more CBS broadcasts I recorded years back to mine among my miles of tapes. Nice to hear from you.
Nobody knew more about groups and concerts like Bud! I wonder whether he knew Dale Dorman, when Bud worked in Buffalo.

I never had the opportunity to meet him, or hear his show, but Harley Brinsfield was my great uncle - and a family legend 🤗( he was my grandmom’s daring brother, who’d run off to join the merchant marines). I did finally meet his sons at her funeral 🥰😇
