Here was a moment in time: during the early days of the Vietnam War, when radio news reports on anti-war protests were still a thing of the future-especially around military bases, and pop radio stations were largely all in on what was happening in Southeast Asia. WGNE (dubbed “Genie Radio”) in Panama City, Florida was no exception, being close to Tyndall Air Force Base. Interestingly, this brief newscast is preceded the song “My Generation” by the Who, at the time climbing the charts. This is followed by a public service announcement for the Marines. In the news: the Russians have landed an unmanned spacecraft on the moon (over three years before Apollo 11), there is a report on a new GI Bill of Rights, and the latest from the Vietnam War. The aircheck fades out with another song climbing the charts, “The Ballad of the Green Berets.” T. Michael Jordan was holding down both the deejay and news reader spots.
