  • “THE HARLEY SHOW, MUSIC OUT OF BALTIMORE,” WBAL AUG. 17, 1974, WMEA AUG. 1, 1978
With his closing theme “Sailing Down Chesapeake Bay,” Harley Brinsfield’s jazz show-”The Harley Show, Music Out Of Baltimore”- had built a big following all up and down the Eastern Seaboard for 17 years over WBAL in Baltimore. Its birth came from an unlikely source. Harley and his wife operated a wildly popular series of sandwich shops and beginning in 1948 he began buying radio time to promote his burgers and more. He hit the jackpot in 1957 when he secured a two-hour block on WBAL, where he remained until 1974. Harley’s other passion was jazz and between promos for his sandwiches, he played a great mix of jazz, heavy on Dixieland. After he left WBAL he continued to be heard on various stations. His show was unique and very personable. Harley Brinsfield died in 1990. I captured airchecks of his show twice. This upload contains the last moments of his last show on WBAL on Aug. 17, 1974, followed by a chance pickup of his show being aired over WMEA in Maine four years later, on Aug. 1, 1978.

I still miss this show. I remember driving home during night classes listening to the Harley Show. Sure brings back fond memories. Oh, and I do miss the Harley Burgers. A Harley Original with everything.

As a kid of thirteen I listened to Harley's radio show on WITH, it was my introduction to Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Chick Webb etc. What great times. As for Allen Prell, he was a most loveable wildman, his "Uncle Allie's yard sale" was just plain great!

I never had the opportunity to meet him, or hear his show,
but Harley Brinsfield was my great uncle - and a family legend 🤗( he was my grandmom’s daring brother, who’d run off to join the merchant marines). I did finally meet his sons at her funeral 🥰😇

Hi, Wow, I just discovered your channel, very cool! You wouldn't happen to have any more stuff from WBAL radio, would you? More specifically, anything containing Allan Prell? He was on WBAL from 1982-1999, although he was on other stations before, such as WEEL, WTOP, and WLMD, there were others. He was extremely entertaining, there is some stuff containing him on youtube, but not nearly enough in my opinion. :)

Thanks for your note. While off hand I don't believe I have anything from Allan Prell's radio days, but I did record a lot of airchecks randomly and there is always a chance that something might turn up.
