  • WGBB, FREEPORT, NEW YORK NEWS, 11 P.M., JULY 17, 1967
WGBB, Long Island’s oldest radio station, with news reported by Mitch Levy. Only two items in the news. First is a report that the City of New York was putting in a $2 million bid for the oceanliner Queen Mary (the ship ended up being sold to the City of Long Beach, Calif., to serve as a tourist attraction). The second report deals with the death at age 40 of jazz musician John Coltrane. I conclude this upload with a portion of the National Education Television (NET) program “Jazz Casual” featuring the John Coltrane Quartet from December 7, 1963. This segment includes the program introduction with host jazz columnist Ralph Gleason and concludes with an NET ID.

It's Mitch Lebe still filling in from time to time on 1010 WINS.. which was his first station as he was called "The Teenage DJ" in 1957 or something. It's the same voice today..

That would be Mitch *Lebe* - still at it today, as part-time anchor on 1010 WINS - where he'd started his career way back in 1958 as a "teenaged disc jockey." In-between, he not only worked there and here, but also at WNBC and WNWS/WYNY, WCBS Newsradio 88(0), and WBBR 1130.

It's nice that you took the time to recognize and pay respect John Coltrane by recording this audio snippet from the radio! How old were you at the time? Thanks.

I was 14 that summer and liked jazz even then. Even though I began recording around this time, I got this from another source. Coltrane was a great musician who left us way too young.
