  • RADIO COMMERCIALS FROM TOP 40 STATIONS 1973 PT. 1
From time to time I’ll round up some radio commercials culled from airchecks of the Top 40 pop stations grouped by a year. Here’s Part 1 from 1973 with some of what we were listening to between the hits back then as companies vied for our attention:
-MGM: Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson, Chuck Connors and Joseph Cotton in the far distant year 2022 discover the secret of “Soylent Green.” Now that it’s 2023 we all know the secret of “the most bizarre riddle ever to face mankind,” right?
-Ogilvie Shampoo: “Feel like a slave to your shampoo?”
-S&H Green Stamps: Wow, this one would never fly today. The police sergeant is not only your stereotypical Irish cop, but he’s a sexist too. No wonder there aren’t any S&H Green Stamps today.
-Trident Gum: This woman’s proudest moment of her life was when her little brats showed up at someone’s house looking for candy on Halloween and rudely chastised the homeowner for trying to hand out “bad gum” to kids.
-The Pizza Hut: Good gosh, impressionist Rich Little evokes Johnny Cash to sell pizza (”I feel a song comin’”).
-WCFL: The Last Contest over WCFL is underway and you can enter up to 10,000 times per day if you want.
-Ford Torino: Let’s see, the five senses are sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. Which would you use when picking out your Torino? Hopefully not taste and smell.
-Miller Malt: This ol’ boy has really mellowed out since he started drinking smooth Miller Malt and now the chicks won’t leave Big Earl alone.
-Schlitz: The Friends of Distinction beg to differ. They drink Schlitz.

I’m listening to a radio program from ‘73 that has the commercials cut out, now I can get the full vibe; thanks!

Saw the movie Solvent Green. Starvation has gotten bad, but not that bad yet. Had Green Stamps many years ago. Sure seems like an easier time, looking back at them now. I had just gotten out of High School
