- LOWELL THOMAS, CBS RADIO NEWS, FEB. 5, 1976
I greatly admired legendary broadcaster Lowell Thomas (1892-1981) and had frequent contact with him in the final years of his remarkable career. In the 1970s I recorded a number of his “Lowell Thomas Brings The News” 7 p.m. radio newscasts over CBS Radio. Check out my UA-cam Channel and Playlists section for the many Lowell Thomas newscasts I’ve already uploaded.
This newscast, which I recorded on Feb. 5, 1976, reports that Secretary of State Henry Kissinger lamenting the state of relationship between the Executive Branch and Congress; Guatemala earthquake toll now upwards of 3,000; Senate bill to block Supersonic Concorde flights to the U.S. rejected by a single vote; President Ford signs into law a new $6.4 billion railroad aid bill; Presidential candidate Morris Udall calls Democrat George Wallace and Republican Ronald Reagan “the twin horsemen of the radical right;” Presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy names a running mate; Watergate prosecutor John Sirica suffers a heart attack (he died in 1992); Catholic churches in California have been praying for rain; Minnesota legislators consider putting warning labels on alcoholic beverages.
Live in Minnesota. Those warnings never did make it on alcohol (Or if they did they were gone by the time I was old enough to start drinking!).
McCarthy ran as a third party candidate that year. I believe he got about 750,000 votes.
