Gus Mitchell- Cranes Nest Honey
Приєднався 16 бер 2015
I operate a small apiary in the Memphis area providing a range of beekeeping services to beekeepers and organizations. Including consultations, classes, and beekeeping tours to the public. I also provide the usual products such as nucleus colonies, honey, comb honey, and beeswax.
I’m very passionate about bees and plants native and cultivated. I love teaching people about bees and equipping beekeepers with new techniques and skills to practice in their apiary.
If you find yourself in the Memphis area during spring/summer and you are interested in scheduling a beekeeping experience (no bee suit necessary) reach out and we will set it up!

February Update
Переглядів 2 тис.Рік тому
With all the wet weather I've not had a lot of opportunities for videos. To be honest I haven't had much going on that I thought would make a good video. I've just been getting equipment together and things built in preparation for spring. I don't know about you guys, but this last part of winter seems to drag on and fly by at the same time. I can hardly wait for spring, but still so much to do 😄
Lift Gate Project Update
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Рік тому
You may have heard me mention previously about wanting a lift gate or a boom to take some of the workload pulling honey. A boom wasn't a good fit for me right now with the truck I have so I decided to look for a lift gate. I visited with another beekeeper who had been using a liftgate exactly how I wanted, which really sold me on the idea. So, I picked up a used non-working lift gate, and with ...
Barrel Heater- Dealing with Crystalized Honey

Dealing with crystalized honey can be a chore, dealing with it in the barrel/ drum can become a bigger chore. In this video I'm trying out some inexpensive band heaters to see if they fit the bill.
Queen Rearing- Management tips from Chris Werner
Переглядів 6 тис.Рік тому
This video is my one and only from the Hive Life conference 2023. It's also my first Interview. I think that nerves get to all of us at times and I'm no different. After spending a good deal of time with Chris that day I completely blanked on his name! Chris got a good laugh, and I really appreciated him carving out some time for the interview. The subject is Queen rearing and there are some gr...

Wintertime is proving to be a tough time to make content for me. I made this video twice, and never did get it to come off the way I wanted. Nevertheless this is what I have going on this time of year. It’s pretty specific info for my area, but I still hope most of you can find some useful information in it. I plan to revisit this topic. With that said, this is an excellent time of year to scou...
Queen Cards- Beekeeping Records
Переглядів 1,5 тис.Рік тому
These cards are what I've came up with to hopefully help me be a better beekeeper and Queen breeder. I have all the best intentions when it comes to record keeping, but I always seem to slack off and not keep it up to standards. Ian Steppler uses a card system and his definitely inspired me to make these. Now we just need to see how they weather and what else I want to change. I'm looking forwa...

Outyards: Yard Rent
Переглядів 1,7 тис.Рік тому
Tis the season! It's that time of year when we pay our "yard rent" or farmers gifts. It can be an important event because it provides the beekeeper an opportunity to catch up with the farmers and discuss how the year went. It's also a prime opportunity to discuss potential new yards. I plan to put out a few videos on outyards, how to ask and what to look for. Thanks for watching!

What is the temp for decrystalization?
I like you openness to new ideas.. super interesting! I am in NS and there are no good UTubers that are Canadian ( there are Canadian utubers ) I totally enjoy the ones from southern US abs European utubers
Absolutely awesome result. We love good tryers.
Where did u get your bee suit? Also, r your gloves sting proof?... if so where did u get them? thx
When u offset the honey supers #1 doesnt that let rain in? ... and... #2 doesnt that promote robbing? thx i am a novice trying to learn.
Hey Gus, I came back to this video looking for you, I realized i had not seen a video from you in a long time. I really enjoyed all your videos and i hope you are doing well.
Do you graft all your own queens? What certification do you recommend?
Thanks for sharing Gus
Was wondering if you ever used the cage to isolate queen cells that are caped so as to recover more than one immerging queen to use in another hive which yo split…???
this tank still holding up well for you?
Really have learned a lot from you wondering if you were going to put up more videos
good video, FYI, Michael Bush is a big time proponent of the upper entrance. Actually for more reasons that honey, in his book is the Practical Beekeeper, one of his big advantages of the upper entrance is the lack of skunk pressure as I remember it, and as a fellow husker I tend to agree that there is a lot of skunks in the midwest. I tried upper entrances early on a few years ago and the bees did not seem to use it much, now with a few more years of experience maybe I should give it a try again and see if they would take to it better.
I laughed with you about the intro. Good info. I have not seen this info anywhere else .
The thing i hate about these Refractometers is you have to recalculate it with extra virgin olive oil every time room temp changes 5°, but im glad i read that in instructions cause its usually. 5 to 1 # out of calibration everytime i get ready to check. Hope to get one of those electronic ones like Kaymon one day, but they are pricy
Thanks for the great video!!
"Click bait"....I'd never thought thats what that was, I read title a yr ago and lost confidence in you cause I trust Bob 100%. And I quit watching your videos. But I decided to hear you out to see how anyone could disagree with Bob. Never seen a lie that made me wanna watch. Thanks for videos
Could you measure distance between points on 8 frame spacer? I'm gonna build some, thanks gus
True, mold doesn't kill bees farmers do with pesticides, superdfm from "strong microbials "will take care of that . Also varoa mites kill colonies, oxalic acid vapor with Robs instantvap will take care of that. Bees just coat over mold, not an issue. Thanks Gus for educational videos
Wow ! Thats a great idea.
You running 8 frames? You shallow frames, are they 6 5/8"?
During the nectar flow, how many boxes do you put on the strong hive and how many days do you come back and check?
Thanks for the info. Looking forward to more vids
On a good hive how many supers will they fill?
Are most of your yards shaded or under a tree?
Gus, I hope that you'll start posting more videos in 2024. One of the best there is regarding straightforward and valuable information.
Show us your finished product?
This just popped up in my feed, hope that you are well!
I'm going to make one of these today and possibly transfer a queen over to a split that looks queenless. We'll see! I unfortunately don't have any brood in the split, just nectar in all cells which is why I'm thinking the split never had a queen make it. You say wait 5 days correct? I'll probably need to put some attendants in there with her from the original hive.
I am glad you clarified that this was a mating nuc. Most important is to have enough nurse bees to care for and feed royal jelly from day 1 of hatching all the way thru mating and into the period of 3 weeks, time-tested, to truly see that she is a good proven established laying queen. A must IMO for a successful virgin queen cell just introduced inside your nuc. Thanks 🐝
I can’t find any videos on making an eight frame spacer. Does anyone have a link to one?
Good honest talking
Great chat Gus , much appreciated
Appreciate the knowledge you're sharing. Congratulations!
I think you said three days I don’t think you mean three days. If you kill the queen that is lying in three days, the eggs are hatched and they are perfect age to make queen cells.
It's called brain fart😂
Why not make a metal surenge u suck up the wax push it out in a controlled manner like getting a shot
I used to do that way too heck with that way i now boil my framesu can use a turkey fryer fill with water. Till boiling di ur frames comes out clean😊
Gus, watching this again getting ready for spring. I look forward to when you have time to do these again! Thankful for all of the knowledge in these videos. Be blessed!
Love that you share your experience it helps a ton
Why do you not just use narrow starter strips rather than the deeper surplus foundation? I know it takes longer and is more work for the bees but it seems the quality of the final product would be much better.
I still find myself re-watching your videos as I progress in my beekeeping experience. Such great timeless information. I hope you are doing well. I hope to see you at a local meeting soon. Thanks Gus.
Thanks Gus ! I am thinking about giving it a try this year !
Does this ever cause robbing? I'm near augusta ga and very much enjoy your videos
Really miss your videos gus !
How do you dry the pollen & for how long?
Metal frame spacers are way better than plastic. 8 frames are better than 9 or 10 as fars as honey per box . The one drawback is you have to be more gentle with handling 8s or they will tear themselves apart if handled roughly . Self spacers are better in brood boxes and frame spacers in honey supers speed up supering during the honey flow because you dont have to stop to evenly space the frames .
