  • Groundsel, Baccharis halimifolia, is a handsome shrub that blooms in late autumn. When little else is flowering, groundsel tree attracts the attention of pollinators with its clouds of white flowers.
It wasn't beauty that drew my attention though, it was the sour, foul stench that this shrub's nectar produces. Groundsel has avoided my radar for some time. Why? I'm not sure, possibly because it blooms so late.
This year while doing mite washes, I couldn't help but notice the nectar shake I was getting gathering samples. At the first yard I was wondering if they had found something soured or fermented to clean up. But yard after yard we had nectar shakes that reeked of vinegar.
I had to get out and track down what these bees were into, and it didn't take long!

Glad you shared this. We have these down the wood line of our property and I noticed the bees working them a couple weeks ago and was wondering what they were.

Gus, thanks for sharing your plant knowledge and your gust! lol It was definitely windy there. Anytime you’re showing nectar and pollen plants that the bees work I would love to see a very close up of the blooms and leaves. You’ve shown several plants this fall that I didn’t know. Keep up the good work.

Wow I was just noticed it on the highway around here . On this road it just had a major road connection build on to it an it is all around this new exchange so this must be something the state is now using as a ground cover . I was going to stop last week an use my plant app to see what it was but I sure will now . Thanks for the info on it . THANKS

It’s spread by birds and though it is native has an invasive nature.
It will grow in some very rough conditions/soil.

Thanks Gus. Reminds me of the Golden Rabbitbrush we have in the foothills of Colorado - late blooming favorite of bees. I wonder what the honey will taste like? On another note, will you be at the Hive Life conference in January? I’d love to thank you in person for your vlog!
