Mixing Scrap Sugar

- I've been asked about my feeding setup more than a few times now, so I thought it'd be a good opportunity to show while mixing up this scrap sugar.
This sugar was bought relatively cheap, since it's clean up sugar. I was trying to save a dollar but learned a lesson instead.
Good video Gus. We had a beekeeper here in Columbia lose most of his hives last winter using scrap sugar. He had a barrel that was highly contaminated with corn starch and did not know that until after the colonies perished.
Good vid Gus
Good video Gus! We use a 12V trolling motor w/Marine battery and mix it by the barrel. Have a 12v agricultural pump and pump it straight out of that same barrel
Gus, when you you’re mixing in a 55 gallon drum instead of the boat pedal try an old 12v trolling motor if you have one. You can find them cheap at a yard sale or thrift store.
Great video Gus. Thanks for the info
Good stuff Gus. Looks like a lot of work. I prefer sucrose myself but am currently using HFCS. So easy.
Agreed, back to hfcs for me
“If I had someone else that I had to pay” 😂 #equalwagesforDominic!
There’s definitely a deficit, count it against all those kid benefits
Maybe you can make an ASMR video of someone working those barrels 😆 Thanks for sharing Gus ☺️
I’m jealous of that weather, I’m near Buffalo NY
My son got pretty good work out moving a yard great having young strong back around .. finally got cold so we could move it but they were heavy.. our local pioneer sugar best deal now .. we can buy semi loads of sugar beats pretty cheap they sell them for deer feed .. truck load 60.00 need a way to boil and smash them.. then filter out the solids .. smart people probably could build a machine to process beats into sugar.. small scale .. 49cents a pound probably be dollar next year.. wasn't such a warm Oct I wouldn't need to feed I left the fall flow on but they used a lot making brood
Darn Gus, I was all into this video and wanting to find such a deal near me to save money...........and then I finished watching the video!
😂
like your setup,w extension wand,is that a ball valve, w lever?
I’m not sure I’ll take a closer look when I’m back at the shop
How do you find local syrup source ("local hot out of the tank food grade corn syrup")? I have tried searching for bulk syrup supply on Google in a variety of ways, even tried contacting a soda supplier but have struggled to find a source
Soda factory is a good start, look for hfcs-55
What kind of places sell bulk syrups? I’m near several cities and lint find the right google search words I’m guessing???
Hfcs 55, sucrose, bulk sugar, soda companies 🤷♂️ just give it a look
Hey Gus, if you took off some of the sugar out of the barrel would adding hot water to the rest of the barrel soften up the rest of the sugar? It would probably take a day for it to soak up but maybe then it would be workable.
Didn’t seem to help
Thanks, Gus. Reducing costs means increasing profit, but time is money, too. I'm at the point where mixing syrup in a ten gallon water cooler is a big bottleneck. Any options to scale up, but not to ibc tote?
55 gallon drum
Do you do anything to the hfcs before feeding it to the bees? Is that only used for bringing them up to winter weight?
It’s used the same way as sucrose syrup thinned out or as is
Gus I live over in Hot Springs Arkansas, what outside temperature will you stop feeding sugar water? I pulled feeders off my hives last week and what syrup that was in them was just freezing.
I won’t stop, we have warm days every month
I’ve never had syrup freeze sounds very weak
I suppose I was worried that the surgery water would be to cold for the bee's
Isn’t their stored honey cold ?
What about an electric trolling motor?
I haven’t tried but do you think it would break up rock hard sugar?
Stirring isn’t the hard part, especially with hot water.
@@gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529 no real idea, it might be something to ask around about.
Gus, You don't pay your son? LOL
No
