In this 9th and last part to the series, I am on Lake Winnipeg and try to make my way South to my end destination; Manigotagan. The calm beautiful paddling days that I've had on the lake have changed into a very strong consistent wind and I get hit by a very intense boreal storm while on a little island. It gives me the opportunity to take the first rest day. For about 20 days I had been traveling every single day, putting in the distance. It was actually pretty nice to be forced to stay put and just take in how far I have come. Besides, there is a lot worse places in the world to get stuck!
The end of my trip plans was slightly altered but it worked out for the better! I got to see some pretty spectacular wildlife on my new route and had another magical morning on a river! See for yourself!

28 DAYS ALONE - FULL VIDEO - My first ever solo trip and wildfires burned half my route behind me!

390 kilometers by canoe, zigzagging in between several of the biggest wildfires in the province. I had ashes raining on my tarp, seen the flames of a wildfire high above the treetops as I crawl into my tent at night. This was a trip filled with monster fish that, to many avid fisherman, would be the fish of a lifetime! Wildlife was abundant with quite a few moose & woodland caribou, otters swim...

When I first got to Lake Winnipeg, I did not have a lot of expectations. I did not know what it would be like. In my preparations, I had focused on the safety aspects of paddling a big lake, cause I had never done that before... I also studied the topo maps of the lake but on paper it is all just simple lines.... I looked at average weather conditions, depth maps, water quality and those kind o...

Every spring, in the time leading up to my first big canoe trip of the year, I try to keep an eye on several eagles nests within about a 45 minute drive from where I live in South West Ontario. To witness moments like these, is absolutely priceless to me. One of the most incredible beings roaming this planet is the Bald Eagle. I am thankful to always see many of them on my travels. I leave my stunning campsite on X-rock island and I make my way past several stunning rapids as the descent of the river continues down a staggering 137 meters. Lovely.
Very nice journey what is the brand of your hat? Thanks
Well done. Thank you for sharing.
Really enjoyed watching this series
Koen, just worried bout ya, how are you
Been in your boots…it’s a smart call! Enjoy!
Watch CC all the time! Nice to have morrel mushroom pasta! Here’s to Plan B! TY!
Been to this area…fly in fish shore lunch…I, too, stay away from the ‘popular’ sites. TY!
Stumbled across your channel! Been on this route…very nice! TY!
Beautiful body of water and landscape . Sadly the sky --- even up there they do spray poison --- crime against nature, Thanks for the video, It feels like home.
nice vid man, in 4k looks good and smooth, was this 60 fps or 30?
Wonderful series of a beautiful land.
I'm hoping to train our young German shepherd to canoe. Not hopeful. Your dog is a beauty. If you watch Canoe the North, you'll see dogs who really love the water. I keep finding new vids.... I think this is the last....where is this area? Looks like crazy fun! You're on my big screen and my tablet....
I just found this video. I live in the states, but I've actually been to this park... at an island camp. You definitely look younger! The music is more uptempo..... "good 'ol boys" having fun. It's interesting to me how little the viewers know about the channel masters....my term. On your channel page, I didn't see a subscription to Lost Lakes. Maybe I missed it. Any way, I'm very glad you continued tripping and putting out new content. One UA-camr says, we should succeed, fail or die trying. Maybe too extreme... but much like "endurance."
I think I've now watched all of your videos twice. For some reason, I've enjoyed them more the second time. Maybe got use to your understated style. The high price gear. The humility. I've literally watched hundreds of back country canoe trips and you rank among the best for me. Yet, I don't think I even know your name. Do your friends call you "Dutch."? I still think your still fame work is incredible.
Thanks soo much! I really appreciate that! My name is Koen. Born and raised in the Netherlands but now living in Canada. Thank you for your kind words!
Wonderful job.
Leaving that moose skull & antlers there was right & cool. Thanks for sharing!
The fact that you pay tribute to mother nature and our ancestors by putting tobacco on sacred Native American places speaks volumes about you & how much you care about the places you are visiting, Kudos, my friend! Respect & peace! Thanks for sharing
somehow this dropped off my radar, after watching the first few episodes months ago. Glad I remembered to look this up again. It's getting close to August. got another one planned?
Funny timing! I just got out of Wabakimi for 28 days just 2 days ago!
Great adventure! Good job making the tough choice to bail.
Heerlijke video weer, thanks for your efforts.
WHY is he catching wonderful fish, pike and bass THEN TOSSING THEM BACK ...MEANWHILE HAULING STEAK& SAUSAGE rather than living on all the available delicious fish? Someone PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS IRRATIONALITY TO ME...
Only ANGLOS ever "filet" fish, therefore SINFULLY tossing away most of the fish. All others just scale & gut the fish and fry it WHOLE... WITH SKIN, HEAD, CRISP FINS & TAIL... AND ROE... and eat the WHOLE fish as it should be eaten
I love the way you spin the paddle behind you so you get no water in the canoe 😊
You are the calm , bright, peacefulness this World needs 😊
id rather watch you than anything on Netflix 😊
your smile makes my heart happy 🌟
Bravo. Your story telling and videography are top notch. Your approach to spending 24 days solo is inspiring . I always enjoy watching your Canadian adventure videos and the effort it takes to make them. Keep exploring Canada.
Thank you sir! In about 2 weeks its time for a 30 day solo😁 I appreciate the kind words!
@@The-Dutch-Explorer Be safe. Enjoy. Relax and focus on your video to some degree and you will be fine. Can't wait for the new trip video!!
Thank you! Enjoy your summer!! I hope you get out there too!
Wth?... don't you know that you don't need to take buttwipes with you..i simply pull out some moist muskeg moss and wipe..an old native substitute 😁🌲🌳🌲🐿️🌲🐿️🌲🐿️🪵🐿️🌲🪵🌳🪻
Oh I do all the time!! Works way better than TP too!! But not available everywhere!😅 legit everything we need is out there!
Epic trip, absolutely inspirational! 🤙🏻 Your animal shots were awesome! 👏🏻
Thanks soo much! Epic it was!!👌
Absolutely amazing. Nice sound thanks for sharing your adventure. Guys I recommended you visit the himalayan mountains k2 and Nangaparbat view point from one place moses peak.add this sound in your bucket list.
Thanks! Its on the lost already!👌
Awesome adventure! I love the multiple camera perspectives for the rapids.
Thanks Andrew! An awesome adventure it was!👌
goodmorning..fyi if you come to reindeer lake, you can actually start from Pelican Narrows Saskatchewan and paddle down with portages and you come to whitesand falls dam..and Southend is just a few miles away from the dam..and a native elder would say..do not take a book with you to read, you got nature to read day and night.. that is how we can tell what kind of day its going to be..i see you reading sometimes..but me i just prefer to read nature and learn..have a good one eh 😁
I like that! I am still trying to figure out what to do for this years trip. You’re giving me ideas!! But I would love to come to Reindeer Lake when hunting and trapping is in season so I can provide myself with small game on trip. Probably not till fall. But I have to plan something for 3 weeks from now!
@@The-Dutch-Explorer I guess emails are not allowed.. anyways I will be heading home in July and staying till early October probably..hope to meet you then..
and the fall will also be less boat traffic..
Awesome job! Beautiful photos of the wildlife. Thanks
Thank you!!🙏🏼
What a wonderful series of videos. Thank you !!!
Thanks soo much!!
What an amazing river! And to end it with Lake Winnipeg showing you her beauty and her cranky side and yet still having lots of wildlife encounters. Thanks for bringing us along! It was an incredible trip.
It absolutely was! Another one for in the memory bank! Thanks for watching!!
Gonna miss this series Koen, absolutely loved watching it! Brilliantly shot and edited, can't wait to see more. What have you got this year?
Thanks soo much!! I am honestly not 100% sure what is happening this year. I’m trying to scramble a good long solo together but it has been a struggle!
Noooo! I'm sure you'll get something together. I've got Wabakimi this year, same trop Joe took a couple of years ago (Wendell Beckwith's cabin, etc). Did Kopka last year, was pretty cool.
@MattGoesOutside the trip I am trying to do has a HUGE part of Wabakimi in it and ends up on the Kopka on Bukemiga. 3 weeks from now is when my time off starts so time is ticking. Have a great trip!
@@The-Dutch-Explorer I did that section, there's some awesome canoeing to be had along there. I have a vid if it I can send you, if you want to see it.
@MattGoesOutside absolutely, you can send it to me on facebook or instagram!
Loved this series - thank you for sharing! Donation made - more than worth that much for the enjoyment of living vicariously through your adventures!
Thank you soo much!! That makes my day!! Much appreciated!!🙏🏼
Another gem! Thank you for sharing this; it was an inspiring adventure and you did such a beautiful job filming, editing and putting it all together.
Thanks soo much!! It was highlights for 24 days straight!! I’ll probably do this trip again one day. Great memories and I would love to re-visit my friends in Bloodvein! Thanks for watching!
Great video. I spent a week on the upper French some years ago. Both the scenery and, fishing were great. I really want to get back someday. Your cedar strip canoe is georgeous, but it must be a little tricky compared to the much lighter new boats. I really admire your conviction of relocated to CA. Also appreciate your talent of capturing the immense beauty of Northern Ontario. New sub from Detroit.
Thanks!! Much appreciated! I live in South Ontario, about 3 hours from Detroit. Still too populated here for my liking but there is pros and cons! Thanks for the nice comment! Lots more adventures to come! Thanks for watching and thanks for the sub!
@The-Dutch-Explorer agree pros and cons! It is great to have whatever you may need close at hand, but the masses can be a little too much. A few years back, I relocated in northern Michigan. The area was very beautiful and not too many people. Unfortunately, I have moved back to the burbs after I was offered a position, making significantly more bucks. I stayed with that job for 10 years. Before I could no longer take it but I still miss my pace up in Traverse City, MI. We are watching your Woodland Caribou trip now, a very beautiful place, great video! Cheers
Ook weer goed, verkenning en dan de keuze om te omdragen mooi in beeld gebracht. En daarna mooi wildwater stuk. Zware k.t kano.
Haha, ja dat heb ik onderweg wel een paar keer gezegd ja😬
Geweldige video weer, bedankt.
Heel graag gedaan! Bedankt voor het kijken!!! Ik denk dat je weer bijna bij bent!😅
Beautifully lived, preciously edited communicating all the wonders unfolding them for us as well.Thank you
Thank you very much!🙏🏼
Ouch 11 months of grind for 1 month of life! Ontario cost of living must be brutal. I'm lucky to own a country home in Nova Scotia with my parents, we tried to move to Ontario from Alberta a couple years back but the prices there were like a mean joke. Only place I could afford to live in Ontario is my 4Runner! I'd do it though, just for the canoeing.
Maybe I should just live out of my Tacoma! Ontario is brutal for sure. But I do what I can!
@@The-Dutch-Explorer well it's a great way to spend more time in the bush if you don't have any conflicting commitments, I'm dreaming up a year of overland lifestyle in Ontario, and a year in Newfoundland & Labrador. My rig and my huskies are ready to go. I just have to work and save until I can fund the adventures.
Nice finish to this trip. Beautifully captured. Thank you again for sharing! Looking forward to your next adventure!
That you very much! Im also looking forward to my next adventure!😁
Great video, just wish you posted more often! I am working in Eindhoven this week, greetings from Holland!👍🍻
Bedankt weer!! Ik kom volgende week ook weer eens naar Nederland voor n kort maar gezellig weekje met de familie! Even op en neer om mn verjaardag te vieren😁
Not sure if you have added it to your gear list, but a double blade would surely be a nice addition. You can get them in carbon fibre adjustable length with wooden paddles for a somewhat "traditional" look yet still extremely light. When separated, it will stow away neatly at the stern with one or two bungee straps out of sight until needed when a strong wind comes up, or strong current. And X3 on the shout-out to Christina..she's the real deal
Ah you mean the kayak paddle😅 You probably know that some people are all for the double blade and some people only use a canoe paddle in a canoe. I have tried the double blade but I the one and only thing it is good for in my opinion is poling up and down a creek😅 All respect to everyone who uses a kayak paddle in a canoe and likes it but it’s not for me👍 And yes, Christina does some pretty cool trips out there and that morel pasta was awesome!!👌
Just beginning to watch this series now. Your boat is beautiful, very traditional along with the packs. But if I had your gear I'd paint that blue barrel within a shade or two of the same color as your boat canvas covering. That blue barrel stands out like a sore thumb and takes away so much of the traditional look. Perhaps a burnt orange to blend in, but yet still visible in the event of a dump.
I 100% agree with you on this!! I have even looked everywhere for didfferent color barrels. Now recreational barrel works makes red ones, but thats still way to bright and an eyesore to me. Ive actually thought about making some sort of green canvas cover to go over it or even just a canvas tarp to cover it up. Ive always wanted a good set of canvas tarp anyways to go with this traditional outfit. One to lay on as a groundcover and bedroll and the other to set up overtop as an A-frame.
Wow!!!!!
