  • Follow me along on my 24 day adventure down the Bloodvein River all the way out to Lake Winnipeg and then another 80 kilometers along the lake shore. In this video (part 7) I reach the end of the river and get my first exposure to the big open water of Lake Winnipeg. When I got to Bloodvein River First Nations, I got to meet some amazing people and got to talk to Pimachiowin-Aki land guardian Melba Green as well as Co-chairman William Young. It was a great experience and a pleasure meeting both!

    Nice that you got some history and talked to some elders and locals. I’d wondered if they had a store in town. Nothing is listed or shown on Google. You could have pulled a pizza out for supper from town that night and I wouldn’t have judged! Until you’ve been on a long trip you don’t get it! The car shuttle if you fly in from Bissett generally drops cars off at the bridge short of the Bloodvein village. I thought it would be nicer to end at the village though and get all the way to Lake Winnipeg!

    • @The-Dutch-Explorer
      @The-Dutch-Explorer  9 місяців тому +1

      Haha I would totally would have grabbed a pizza if I had seen a place! Lol. I loved seeing the town and connecting with the locals. Definitely something I will try and do every opportunity I get on these long trips. I wanted to see a part of the shore of the big lake as well even though big lake travel was a first for me. (So was paddling rapids quite frankly) the lake is stunning, you’ll see in the next part. Thanks for watching!!

    About 23 years ago I tree planted up Rice River Rd from the small town of Manigotagan where we would get our supplies. It was a huge job of 1 million trees and we actually had to get help from Bloodvein. It was super buggy being in the end of June. Heritage reforestation who we worked for and Jack Macdonald was the owner. Great video, brought back memories. We also planted all over Manitoba but this place was saved for last because of the brutal working conditions. The land was soaked and area was prepped 6 years before we got there so needless to say you turned around after planting one tree and couldn't see your line. I always think about how the trees look now being almost 25 years. We took a look at Loon straight on the way up from Manigotagan. If I remember correctly we traveled from that town heading north up Rice River Rd for about 80klm and camped in a small gravel pit for a few weeks. It's nice that you had a chance to speak with the elders. My uncle and grandfather's names are William Young. My middle name I've inherited from them. Thanks again for the memories!

      That is amazing!! Thanks for taking care of the land!! It is a incredibly beautiful area!! I think I just know the gravel pit you’re talking about, I think I go by here in my next episode which might just come out within a week if all goes well. Granite quarry cove is what it is called if we are talking about the same place. I made use of the calm of the morning and cut from there straight across to Loon Straights and Monkman Island.
      I miss that beautiful stretch of shoreline!

      @The-Dutch-Explorer awesome brother! I'm on standby for your next video. It really is a beautiful area that's for sure. If you ever get a chance to camp in the Cypress Hills of Alberta and Saskatchewan... do it... you won't be disappointed. It too is a special area. Cheap camping and wood is included!!! Lol I know that was random but it's great to explore outside of your normal boundaries. Safe travels and I'll see you in the next video!

      @The-Dutch-Explorer  9 місяців тому

      Thank you! I did fish, though not anywhere near as much as on most of my trips. The bite was not hot at any time of day and There was soo many other highlights that it was perfectly balanced. More fishing and not catching much would have added a negative… if that makes sense. I was super content. I do still eat fish a few times this trip though.

    Great series Koen! I use alot of the same gear - it works!
    Cheetos are approved > especially M&Ms!!
    Would you consider the water levels ordinary or lower than usual?
    Did you see anyone else other than at the settlement on the route?!? I understand it to be a popular trip(?)
    Bloodvein is on the bucket list. I never thought of paddling out through the lake so I'll be interested in how that went for you

    • @The-Dutch-Explorer
      @The-Dutch-Explorer  8 місяців тому +1

      I could honestly not tell you if the water was very high or low from normal but I think it was slightly lower than usual for spring time. I saw 2 groups of people along the way, one at a cabin, the other was a group of boy-scouts who were on a one week long loop from somewhere along the Gammon river, then up the Bloodvein and back to the Gammon. I always like to do my trips before the busier season. I gladly deal with more flies and bugs over having to see more people. No one I saw was actually paddling the length of the river. I know there was groups far behind me but I was likely the first in 2023. I find this way you see more wildlife and way more solitude.
      The gear I have is all great and I love my setup, though I do desperately need a lighter canoe!
      Thanks for watching!

    A great video and a fantastic trip! Given the discussion about industrialization threatening the Canadian wilderness, you might be interested in Grey Owl, who was warning about this 100 years ago - and who was also an avid canoeist! Here's a beautiful introduction if he's new to you: ua-cam.com/video/xGLuY5xlGAw/v-deo.html.
    It looks like you had a secure setup with your tent on the last night, but you might want to look at a variation on the technique when setting up on bare rock: ua-cam.com/video/mwO1mWdXkFA/v-deo.html. You might also get some tips on perfecting your Canadian accent there! ;)
