- When I first got to Lake Winnipeg, I did not have a lot of expectations. I did not know what it would be like. In my preparations, I had focused on the safety aspects of paddling a big lake, cause I had never done that before... I also studied the topo maps of the lake but on paper it is all just simple lines.... I looked at average weather conditions, depth maps, water quality and those kind of things... In my first two days in the open, I got to experience the true character of vast Lake Winnipeg. What a incredibly beautiful place this is! Everything was absolutely stunning from the sunrise at night to the abundant wildlife that hides within the islands and rocky coves as well as on the beaches and from the Eastern shore, the sunsets we astounding. And a immense part of these shores are completely wild and mostly untouched still. I'm very glad I tagged a part of this magnificent shoreline on to my already amazing solo trip.

I've never seen that many animals in one trip, unbelievable. Especially those shots of the coyote it's like it was putting on a show for the camera.
The first 9 days or so I saw nothing, then I saw a cinnamon bear with cub and saw a ton of wild life every day since then! It was incredible!! And yes the coyote was absolutely magical!
Thanks for the quick comeback. I used to do paddle like you do but as I got older I found I needed a seat back. I turn 70 this year and still like to paddle. I have gone to Quetico every year since 1979. Really enjoy wilderness paddling. Your videos get the paddling juices flowing.
Wow! That is a lot of trips to Quetico!! You must have many stories to tell! There is something about wilderness paddling that just makes you want more and more! I wonder what my ‘paddling portfolio will look like when I’ll be 70! Thanks Mike!!
73 and bought an inflatable fishing kayak that has small electric motor that slides in where skeg would fit. Sea Eagle and Bixpy. Had neck surgery and get back injections. May have been dumb purchase!
I don’t think that is a dumb purchase at all. I hope you do get to use it. You might! If you would not have gotten it you definitely would not ever have used it. Its great to keep the options open and stay connected to the land as much as possible!👌
Wow, what a moving video to watch. Thanks for creating mellow footage with such attention to the wildlife and your surroundings. Beautiful place, and the sounds of the birds spoke to me through the soundtrack.
Thank you soo much, I really appreciate that! It is exactly what I am there for! Always a pleasure!☺️
Your cinematography is getting really good . And your use of music to imagery is really good makes watching that much more enjoyable
I really appreciate you mentioning this. A lot of time and thought goes into my music selection and editing in suitable music that really fits the scene. Music has always been an important part of my life and it can make for a completely different scene! Thanks for noticing!
Awesome job! Beautiful photos of the wildlife. Thanks
Thank you!!🙏🏼
Dude lake Winnipeg is unbelievable !! The wildlife is off the scale... otters, eagles, moose, coyote, even the endangered mosquito!!
Right?? Maybe one day we should start there and get to the Hudson Bay together! The Hayes River starting at Norway house! Just planting a little seed there my friend!! 🌱
I hope all is well👍
Sounds SOOOO epic we WILL do that dude. How long is that trip?@@The-Dutch-Explorer
@EzeAdventurer close to 500km. Lets chat about it some time and catch up!
cool bud@@The-Dutch-Explorer
We’re anxiously waiting to see the final portion of your adventure on Lake Winnipeg!! 😊 We really like your enthusiasm and laidback travels!
Thank you! Sorry for the long wait! I’m working on the very end of the last part as we speak! Won’t be long now!
Yet another outstanding video. Paddling with a following sea is very difficult, it always wants to spin you around. Smart move setting up camp and waiting out the winds. The wildlife was a nice bonus!!
Well hello there my friend!! this is where my sailing experience comes in handy! though a canoe is much smaller than a tallship, the movement in water is similar to a point. once you get a feel for it you can counter steer before a wave even turns you off course. I made sure I had lots of time for the lake part of my trip and I needed it! Waters turn a little wilder yet! the wildlife was out of this world!!! Thanks Ian!
What a fantastic trip and great video series! Looking forward to more!
Thank you!! 🙏🏼
Awesome trip my friend … your filming is spectacular!
Thanks a lot! Another incredible trip for in the memory bank! Thanks Peter and Cathy!
So far a really fine canoeing trip. You have a knack for wildlife and I would encourage you to continue with wildlife photography. Excellent UA-cam video.
Thanks Micheal! I tend to somehow always find them! I feel extremely fortunate!! Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it! And thanks for watching!
Very nice video! All of it was well done with a ton of wildlife viewing opportunities!!!! Amazing! Enjoyed this video very much. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks man! I enjoyed being there and making the video! It was a perfect trip! Thanks for watching!
You got lucky on the wildlife on this trip 👍🏻
Extremely fortunate yes!! I purposely decided to go in peak bug season for this reason. More wildlife, and less people!👌 exactly the way I like to see the world😁
Wow, so much beautiful landscape never mind all the wildlife with it as well. Glad you're playing it safe with the wind on that lake. I've heard horror stories about how bad that lake can get, like any large Canadian Lake.
It was nothing short of incredible!! Yeah you have to play it safe, especially going solo. I saw the lake getting stirred up several times and the first time I got to shore ahead of the storm and was in the middle of setting up my tent as the wind hit. Its really a shame I didn’t get that on video because within an hour, the lake went from fairly smooth calm waters to very intense waves with whitecaps and back to smooth again… by the time I was done setting up, it was pretty much over! That was my first couple of hours on lake Winnipeg so she just let me know not to mess with her! Then later on in the trip I caught myself in waves soo big for my tiny little 16 foot canoe that I did not dare to even think about letting go of my paddle for a second to turn on a camera… it too came out of nowhere and thankfully I was relatively close to a group of islands where I could shelter from the waves. I really felt like Robinson Crusoe that day!😅
Thanks for watching Darren!
Great content, that coyote sequence was fun to watch. I was really looking forward to this part of the trip, who knew the lake was so beautiful, well done. Thanks for
Thanks Robin! I had no idea either but I kinda figured if it is part of the boreal it cant be that bad! But I never expected it to be this nice!
So happy you’re back!!! And enjoying Lake Winnipeg…our cottage is on the southern end of the lake - Victoria Beach - and the lake can be treacherous at times. We call the pelicans the “Gimli Air Force”…beautiful photos of all your wildlife (even the mosquitoes!). Looking forward to your final episode(s), but hope there will be more trips coming in the spring. Maybe if you did some “shorts” of your wildlife, etc. you’d generate more subscribers! Thanks for this video - excellent photography!
Thanks soo much! The ‘Gimli Air Force’ eh?😅 nice one! Thankfully they never bombed me! I was thinking the same thing about the shorts! I think once the final episode is out, I might do this! Thanks for watching! And there will definitely always be more trips!!
@@The-Dutch-Explorer my husband corrected me…the term we used for the pelicans is the “Icelandic Air Force”…Gimli MB has a large population of Icelandic people. We now live in BC and try to get back to the Beach every couple of years.
Great video, love those pickes.
Thanks for watching!
Great video of an awesome trip!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Looked like an amazing trip
It sure was!!! Spectacular!! Lots of firsts for me. Thanks for watching!
Great outdoor videos we wish you the best from Colorado❤👍🏼
Thank you Jeffrey! Much appreciated!
Keep up the great work buddy hard work always pays off!!!
You do a great job with narrating your trip … video was superb too
Thank you! I appreciate that!
One question … you are a long distance paddler … how do you go so long without a BACK REST in your canoe ?
@mikeporter2563 I try to keep good posture while paddling and switch my legs position from time to time. From folded up knees slightly under my canoe seat to stretched out in front of me on the side I’m paddling. I also just take breaks and stretch my legs and back. Sometimes on the shore by standing up, or sometimes by laying down completely flat in the canoe on top of my gear. I try to use my back and core muscles for my paddling strength too.
Great video, just reading about David Thompson on one of his trips, he talked about camping on the shore of Lake Winnipeg on a large flat rock outcropping. Also, in Canoeing with the Cree there is a section talking about a large flat rock outcropping that made a prefect camp site while they waited for the winds to die down. What an amazing series this has been.
Thanks David!! I did read Canoeing with the Cree, I dod not know about David Thompson and the rock outcropping there! Slight chance I was there, that is kinda cool!! It is a spectacular shore line and I’ll likely be back to explore the more Northern part some day and perhaps paddle from there to the Hudson through the Hayes River. But before I’m ready to tackle that I got some prepping to do. A better outfitted canoe with spray deck, obtaining a gun licence and a shotgun for going through polar bear territory (probably solo as well) and just more river experience in general. It seems far away from me right now but so did the Bloodvein about a year ago. I like to aim big!😁 Thanks for your comment David, I appreciate it!
@@The-Dutch-Explorer I have a buddy who has paddled all Lake Winnipeg, he would be a good resource for you to chat with. Hayes is also my dream, one day!
doing Rager Lake look in late May, your welcome to join us

Oh my goodness - how breathtakingly beautiful.
it really was. quite the experience! thanks for watching!
Brilliant!...I live on the west coast- mostly rivers...curoius about your paddle choice. Cheers!
It is stunning! Ive heard the West Coast is very different from the east coast. Is this true?
Let's just just say...the west coast has its own personality. @@The-Dutch-Explorer
Big lake portion I’d have been nervous about! Weather mostly cooperated so far and it’s been pretty awesome. I hope we see 1/4 of the wildlife you’ve seen on our trip. Unbelievable moose everywhere! Otters and the coyote on shore was really a neat view. Leaning towards flying into Murdock lake to start our trip to see the pictos on that lake. Also to get more time in WCPP before Atikaki.
The weather was amazing so far!! Next episode that changes though, very spectacular storm at night!
The wildlife on this trip was surreal!!! The spring is best for that and especially if you are the first person going through an area that year which high almost certainly was.
Murdoch is a stunning lake, you won't regret it and I highly recommend flying in there yes. The collection of pictographs in the north end is breathtaking! Woodland will always have a special place in my heart! But Atikaki is just as amazing! the landscape changes a bit going further into Manitoba. Have an amazing trip and thank you for watching!
I fish in a boat Lake of the Woods down to the south. Main lake is huge with a depth down to only 35 feet deep. Waves can get pet huge in sets of 3 in a different sort of closer wave sets. I’ve been praying several times in a boat with a motor on that lake. I’d think Lake Winnipeg could generate the same types of waves. I’ll look forward to the next video!
Zo mooi! ❤
Dankjewel ma! ❤️
Thanks
Wow!!! Thanks soo much man!! My very first ‘super thanks’! I appreciate it a ton!! 🙏🏼
@@The-Dutch-Explorer That’s for the spray deck fund raiser. The reason you need one is for the thrill that is on your face when you are running the gentle rapids, so when you run big ones, well…. who knows. Great vid and beautiful wildlife shots. Thanks for taking us along. Gives us a break from this -25 winter weather.
@dataminetrap3877 greatly appreciated my friend!! I will definitely be getting better outfitted for the whitewater! What a rush it is to run the whitewater!!With a spray deck I probably would have been able to keep going on Lake Winnipeg too! It is high up on my list, but first a canoe that does not weigh 90lbs😅
Manitoba is the most underrated place in the country
I will agree with you there! I’m actually going up there in 3 weeks!😁
Have watched many canoe trip videos. Yours are BY FAR the best! Excellent photography, nice mellow soundtrack, and good narration. Gives a very good idea what it was like being there. From one long-trip solo canoeist to another, "Thank-you!". Curious what dates your trip ran. And what kind of chair you have: looks like adjustable legs, which could be useful.
Wow! Thank you, thats a huge compliment! My trip was most of June and slightly into July. The chair is by trekology and ordered of of amazon, this is the older model whoch IMO is the better one. The fabric on my old one wore out and so I ordered a new one and I’m sad to report that the legs are no longer adjustable and the fabric is no longer of the quality that my old one was.👎 I was actually planning on reaching out to them soon to see what their response to this is and what their customer service is like. I definitely loved the old one!!
Thanks for watching!!
That metal stake was probably a surveyors "monument." There would be a map and description of how to get to various points/monuments. Could be wrong.
Maybe! Pretty cool eh? Ive found 3 so far.
Very nice journey what is the brand of your hat? Thanks
I'm in the market for a Nova Craft canoe to use on Lake Winnipeg. Would you recommend?
Any of them really! It all depends on what kinda tripping you do and with who! Tandem? Solo? Whitewater? Flat water? They offer an awesome canoe for everyone really. Here you can ‘find your canoe’;
www.novacraft.com/build-your-canoe/
I would contact them directly and talk about the options or even better, go by in person if you are in the area. My personal preference goes to the classic design of the prospector due to the history and versatility. Let me know what you end up getting!!
