Awesome reflections / thoughts at the end... "we don't get what we want... we get what we need". I have no doubt you will conquer this and much more in the future!
Sad to see this adventure come to an early end but knowing when something is actually unsafe and changing plans takes a lot of courage. I'm glad you shared this and hopefully it encourages others to make good decisions and err on the side of safety (especially when solo) on trips. My brother and I ran the Kopka 3 years ago in a group of 4. Even with significant whitewater experience we wrapped our canoe on a rock in one of the rapids. It took all 4 of us heaving, cut logs for leverage and a whole roll of gorilla tape to get it un-pinned and fixed. I'm scared to think what would have happened had I been solo. Combine the whitewater with the insane portages (Mountain Goat Portage in particular) and I think you would have been in for some serious difficulty with your Cedar/Canvas and heavy load. I have no doubt you'll be back to conquer this route at a later date and looking forward to your next adventure in the meantime!
What a great series of videos! I really enjoyed them and will be watching them again. You may not have accomplished your original goal, but your decision was one of an intelligent, thoughtful and considerate explorer. One unfortunate mishap would possibly create a problem not only for you, but also for your family, friends and those who might have to effect a rescue. Most importantly, the trip was still very worthwhile in that it both provided you with an opportunity to self-assess your current capabilities and to set a goal that will open up many more future trip possibilities, benefitting you for many year to come. Well-done!
You made the right decision. Your self honesty is critical in gaining experience which leads to more trips. I'm 70 years old because I learned to retreat, reroute, and realize my limits. You have a lifetime of tripping ahead of you.
Dude 100% the right call. When you know, you know! Lose the battle to win the war... And you didn't even lose it, it's a win from any angle you look at it! The area is so beautiful! That caribou moss!! Beauty Walleye!
You win some and you win some. You never lose when you make the right decisions. Whitewater definitely adds more variables to a trip. Enjoyed the series!
Very good call to head out, overly high water can be dangerous! Been stuck for days because of wind and had to change things up more than a few times, no big deal. You can run white water with a wood canoe, the canoe camps in Temagami do but the trip leaders are experienced and the canoes are usually prospector hulls. Having a keel like yours is not ideal for quick turns plus, rapids with a wood boat means knowing how to do repairs in the bush when needed, not if needed. You still got to be in some nice country, plan another trip when the water is down and enjoy! Oh ya, nice selfie stick 😁
Thanks Donald! My hull has zero rocker on it and a small keel. Though my wooden boat is very beautiful, heavily loaded in moving water this thing is a beast to maneuver! My new nova craft prospector is way easier to maneuver and I intend to use it to gain some whitewater experience on some trips this year. Should make for some interesting videos I think! Looking forward to get started on it! Im glad you noticed the selfie stick!😅 worked out pretty good and they are scattered around everywhere up there! Thanks for watching!🙏🏼
Thank you! I love my photography on trips, though recently I started using my photo camera for filming the wildlife opposed to photo’s. You capture so many more moments like this and I really like it as long as I have the time to set up my tripod for stability! Thanks for watching!
You were gutsy and smart to make the right decision. The canoe is a beauty but not suited for wild water . Good luck and carry on. Your videos are a joy to watch. Thank you for sharing your adventures.
Tough call and sorry your trip came to an early end. Always smart to take extra precautions while solo tripping. I probably wouldnt have been that wise because I tend to be a glutton for punishment...
We know that feeling all to well. Never an easy decision especially when you are sharing it on UA-cam but we think it shows a lot of maturity. We’ve had to do the same thing on more than one occasion and never regretted it (even though its a tough pill to swallow at the time). Well done and we are looking forward to your return to Wabakimi. 🛶
I enjoyed seeing the wood canvas canoe with a single blade, I think that combination is practical for back country travel as I have done it for many years. Sometimes conditions call for a change of plans, you where wise to follow your instincts. Hopefully you will keep the wc canoe and single blade as an option for future trips. Those where some great scenes, looking forward to more of your work.
I will absolutely keep my wood and canvas outfit. I love the whole set up. Dont mind carrying heavy at all. Just can’t control this boat heavily loaded in fast moving water. There also is hardly any rocker. If any at all… if you have seen my Woodland Caribou series, you’ll see that the only thing I have ever used a double blade for is poling up or down creeks😅 I can confidently say I will never ever bring a double blade again. To each their own but I cant stand it! Thanks for watching Robin!🙏🏼
I really appreciate and admire the wisdom and courage you showed in your decision to end the trip - and that you shared it with your community. Other people will learn from you. I look forward to seeing your future adventures!!
Excellent video. I had something similar to me happy on a Petawawa River trip in Ontario. Water was high, already higher then spring flood and forecast was for another 40+ mm of rain in the next day. I had my first whitewater course behind me however I was also alone in a solo boat (esquif pocket canyon properly outfitted). Ultimately I paddled out that night back to the starting point and went on a trip down the Saugeen River instead. Had fun on the Saugeen and ultimately made what was the right decision for me. I've done two more courses since then and like you I am preparing for running more remote rivers like the Steel River north of Lake Superior.
That sounds great! Good choice! I am actually doing the steel river this spring/summer! All class 1 and 2 and I have a proper canoe for it now too! Im beyond exited to get in to that!
@@The-Dutch-Explorer Drop me a note via Facebook PM if you want to chat about this. Possibly even consider a joint trip in two boats. BTW - MKC is a great training place for whitewater, ask about solo in a tandem boat. Alternatively there was a two day course at Elora Gorge last June and I suspect there will be another one this year.
Goed gedaan!
Once you get into white water you will be taught to put the pfd on every time you get in the boat, flat water or rapids. Good call on turning the trip around. I hope you got out more last summer. Any more videos from 2022 coming?
Absolutely! I went to French river, to haliburton highlands a few times and I am working on a little winter bushcraft video as we speak! Lots more to come. But no bigger canoe trips till later this year🙂
I thought about it but once I have a goal set and I cant reach that goal I’m just done. Besides, I’m not good at hanging around the same area for to long. I need a goal and a purpose. If I don’t have that when I am alone and a good distance I can put in every day, I get bored and the loneliness starts to get to me. As long as I have lots of route left to paddle I could go for months probably!
You made a very reasonable choice. I passed through that section (in opposite direction!) 20 days after you were there and the entire area still had extremely high water levels and corresponding fast flow. With the high water many of the portage entrances/exits seemed to be awfully close to very fast flowing rapids/falls!
Very sorry you had to stop your trip short. That being said, its allows better to be safe than sorry. You will one day complete this route and share it with use!
Good call. When you’re solo you need to consider other factors you wouldn’t necessarily think of in a group trip. Each member of the group is relying on everyone else..
