  • I am on my 24 day solo trip down the Bloodvein river and in this video is of day 9 and 10. I leave my stunning campsite on X-rock island and I make my way past several stunning rapids as the descent of the river continues down a staggering 137 meters. Though I have lots to learn, I am starting to get more familiar with the reading and feeling of whitewater. I also have my first moose encounter (of this trip) and man, what a beautiful one!! See for yourself!
    Feel free to ask me any questions you might have, I'm happy to answer to the best of my knowledge, but here is a few links to some recourses;

    That moose with the duck was pretty cool. Now, in my backwoods experience, yes, the calf will stay with its mother which is probably why the bull ran away. When it saw the calf it probably figured mama wasn't too far behind and will get very aggressive around any other wildlife to protect its calf. Now if mama got killed somehow, then I hope if finds another cow moose who will often adopt abandoned calves. If a calf is in distress and crys out, often a cow that's not even the mother will come running to its rescue which can cause fights between cows if mama is near by. I'm thinking either the cow was just inside the tree line or that calf was alone looking for a new mama. Either way, that bull knew to run cause if mama was near by she would have chased him away for sure. Now come the end of September/early October, its a totally different game as the rutt starts. Then the bulls become aggressive fighting for the cows. I learned the hard way how aggressive while breaking some branches one day off a trail during the rutt. A fairly big bull suddenly appeared 10 feet from me. I started yelling at it to try and scare it away but it came looking for a fight as it cocked its head sideways and charged at me as I was bobbing and weaving through trees to get away. Then, as a God send, another bigger bull came running towards me from the right not paying attention to me but went head to head with the bull chasing me. I didn't even have a camera or phone with me and just wanted to get out of there ASAP. Got back to my truck with adrenaline pumping as I thought; just another day here in Northeastern Ontario. LOL!

      Hahaa that sounds like quite the experience!! I think you’re right and likely one of your scenarios is what happened. I like that I actually captured the bulls first reaction at seeing the calf. Without knowing what was coming I thought the only thing he could be afraid of is a bigger bull! Then the little calf came swimming into sight😅

    Well, now you are 1 for 2 running a class 3. Got two words for you - Spray deck. Love the moose video. Like you said, odd for a bull to have a calf along. Thanks for taking us along.

      Haha yeah I would love a spray deck, I’m thinking about making my own. The moose was wicked to see!! Just made my day (and I thought it couldn’t get any better) I hope the little calf got accepted by the bull and will grow to be a big nice bull himself!

    I know I'm a bit behind, but I am loving this series. The moose footage was epic! I'm become almost teary (!) from time to time, I'm just desperate to go back to Canada and do it all again!

      Thats awesome matt! Thank you! And don’t worry, I’m behind myself! I spend the better part of the last 6 weeks going on little trips and spending time with friends. Now the canoeing season is coming to an end, I’ll be spending more time editing! Hopefully part 6 will be done this weekend!

      Thats what I thought! A special friendship between a duck and a bull-moose! And then he seemed to be running away from the poor little calf! I hope it got accepted and will grow up to be a big beautiful bull himself!

      If you look back at my earlier Woodland Caribou trips I catch them on spinner bait every now and then😉 up there when the bite is hot they go for almost anything

    Great looking trip. Really fueling my desire to go there. Seeing a calf moose with a bull was very interesting. Perhaps its mother got killed and it is just tagging along with a bull? Very rarely females will grow antlers so that is another possibility. That is why moose tags specify 'antlered' rather than bull or cow.

    • @The-Dutch-Explorer
      @The-Dutch-Explorer  Рік тому

      Thanks Kevin! I see that you are doing some research for your own Bloodvein River trip! Have you talked to Albert? If I had more time off I would come with and do it again in a heartbeat!
      As for the moose, I had no idea the cows can grow antlers on occasion! Thats neat! The fact that this one responded and ran away at the sight of the calf makes me lean toward your first option which is that it is a bull and the calf parted ways with its mom one way or another. Just as interesting as the duck hanging out with the moose as if they been friends forever!
      Goodluck with your trip planning and if I can be of any help at all, do let me know!

    Catfish?! That's so weird! Beautiful footage of those moose. I don't know that much about whitewater but I bet you would have made that rapid if you did have a deck. It looked like you lost your line when you took on water.

    • @The-Dutch-Explorer
      @The-Dutch-Explorer  Рік тому +1

      Thats what I thought! It kinda makes me want to try and fish for them there. I bet there is some huge ones hiding up there! And yeah I think a spraydeck would have helped for sure, all the water sloshing to one side is what steered me into the eddy and onto shore. A spray deck is also heavy to portage but with the lake travel on Lake Winnipeg later it would have been helpful too! And yes, the moose were wicked!!!😬 thanks for following along!👍
