  • I am back from another incredible solo adventure and excitement is gushing through every vein in my body!!
    On June 13, I started my journey at Lund Lake just North West of Red Lake, worked my way up to the headwaters of the Bloodvein River and paddled it all the way down to Lake Winnipeg, about 340 kilometers downriver. From there I paddled another 80 kilometers or so along the stunning boreal shores of the Lake heading South to Rice River to then, be picked up by Albert Rogalinski from Goldseekers Canoe Outfitting , and be brought back to Ontario.
    What a incredible and unforgettable experience! The river runs through a World Heritage site, Pimachiowin Aki, and is recognized as one of the world's most diverse landscapes and an exceptional example of an ancient culture that thrives today. Anishinaabeg live as one with Pimachiowin Aki, keeping the land in its purest form for all generations through the cultural tradition and have been taking care of these lands for about 7000 years. While on the river, I picture the landscape to have looked extremely similar back then if not exactly the same. I feel like this is what the world is supposed to look like with that natural balance still mostly intact, unlike in the overpopulated part of the world.
    Over its 340km course, the river drops a significant 137 meters in elevation over a series of around 100 swifts, rapids and waterfalls.
    I ran a lot of the class 1 & 2 rapids and even the occasional 3!! Wildlife was abundant, most campsites had epic views and I’ve seen all kinds of weather other than snow, (I did see hail!) some spectacular thunderstorms, all came with a ton of rain thankfully (not starting any fires around me like 2 years ago!) One of them had so much rain, the water level of Lake Winnipeg went up by about 6 inches over night!
    I could go on and on about my trip talking about 24 days of straight highlights, but you’ll have to wait for the full videos for that. i have about 1200 Gigabytes of footage to work with and edit but here is a small teaser.
    For now I can say I made it through alive and man, do I ever feel alive right now!!! The Bloodvein River is officially the first river I have paddled from headwaters to the end! I can proudly say; I DID IT!!!
    A big shout out to;
    The Anishinaabeg people I met in Bloodvein for their hospitality and for taking the time to talk to me about Pimachiowin-Aki and their land.

    Albert and Claire from Golseekers Canoe Outfitting, for my shuttle to Lund Lake at the start and my shuttle back from the Rice River in Manitoba to Ref Lake in the end! Also for weather updates and wildfire information thought that last one wasn’t needed this year thankfully!

    Hap Wilson , for the extraordinary amount of work and detail that went in to your description and drawings of the river and rapids in your book ‘Wilderness Rivers of Manitoba’
    With my (in)experience level I would never have committed to this trip comfortably without having access to your knowledge through your guidebook! And for entertainment while reading ‘River of Fire’ (Dawson made me feel like solo travel was a beautiful thing!) Thank you!

    Ostrom Outdoors, for the incredibly comfortable Wabakimi Canoe Pack and Voyageur Barrel Harness! They helped me carry about 135Lbs of gear and food over countless portages through a very rugged harsh but incredibly scenic and rewarding landscape! (Sometimes portages weren’t even visible) these packs made life out there a heck of a lot easier!

    I cant wait to see the video. Annette and I are the couple that chatted with just outside Rice River, on the Jet Skies. We were thinking of after we left as that evening the storm rolled in, when we were back in Hecla. The power was out in Hecla for 3 days. Crazy storm and you were all alone on an island in your tent. Hope the rest of the trip is going well and thoroughly enjoyjng your channel. Super entertaining!!!!!

      Right on!! Im glad you found my channel! And glad you guys made it back across before that storm hit. It was quite the storm!! I remember I just went inside my tent, laying down on my back in the dark. The tent was being lit up by very bright lightning every 10 seconds but not a breeze of wind or rain yet… then I heard the super powerful wind and a wall of rain in the far distance, just coming closer ever so slowly. Ill never forget, when it hit, i was laying on my back, looking up at my tent shaking in the wind like I’ve never seen before… the sound of the rain hotting the rainfly was soo loud, I was not sure if my tent would even hold. I put on my rain gear and went outside and grabbed the biggest rocks I could handle and find and re-secured all corners and guylines. Now it was just hoping the seems of the tent would hold. I went down to the canoe and tied it down with a second line just in case. All in the dark working with my headlight. The lightning was right above my head thos whole time. You’ll see in the last episode if the footage turned out ok. After all that work and excitement I had no problems sleeping! Remember that little rock outcrop I was standing on while talking to you guys?? That was almost completely under water next morning. The lake rose about 6 inches over night!! Quite the storm indeed!
      Thanks for checking out the channel! I appreciate it 🙏🏼

      Wow...we were at the marina having supper and when the storm rolled in, the manager asked everyone to leave the sheltered sunroof amd into the main part of the restaurant. The power went out and no one left for about an hour as the rain was just pounding. So glad you made it through the night. Really looking forward to seeing the video and letting everyone we know about your channel. Carpe diem my friend!!!

      You can portage around everything you want! This river was used by the Anishinaabe as well as later the Hudson Bay Company and was travelled up stream as well as downstream. If you ever decide to go for it, I don’t think you’ll regret it! I do hope my video’s will change your mind!

      @@The-Dutch-Explorer in my defense, on the right column of other recommended videos, the episode number isn't shown. It is if you click on a video in the column. Sorry for wasting your time on this. If you haven't, check out @Xander Budnick.... he must have grown his back country channel faster than any one. Over 600k..... there are reasons.
