    Well done Ryan and Di! I so enjoyed this awesome adventure. Makes me want to get back on the AT, but here in Northeast Georgia it's been averaging 34C everyday and we're in a drought on top of that so I'm concerned the water sources have gone dry. Probably looking at an Autumn backpacking season.

    Beautiful video and you made it looked so easy! Sure it was not that easy. Were your hiking shoes still wet the next day? Thx for sharing hope you had a wonderful rest that evening? O yes and Di, I saw you made real Jewish coffee in proper cups as well, wonderful, it brought back beautiful memories of people making that coffee on the INT.

    • @LifeofDi-alternative
      @LifeofDi-alternative 11 днів тому

      Janette, you make me laugh for associating that coffee with the INT: Actually, I was more awake than most and our pot and gas were accessible, so I boiled the water but the two people who feature with us are a couple from Haifa and it was their coffee and cups so yes, 100% INT style😂😍 I'll admit it was far from the sugar and Cremora (South African coffee creamer) coffee we normally use😜 Re shoes: I'm trying to recall if they were completely dry or just mostly in the morning🤔 I definitely don't recall the cold, wet shoe feeling in the morning and I think the 4km after the crossing pretty much dried them already. But, after the river crossing, I used a face cloth/flannel and soaked up the moisture and squeezed out the innersoles. I used the face cloth probably 4 times rubbing it into my shoes inside everywhere and squeezing it out each time until it wasn't absorbing more water. Then, because they are trail shoes (breathable and light), and we had a sunny, dry afternoon, they get pretty dry ...and I nearly forgot: We all dried out clothes and shoes on that lovely fire at the end of the video😂 Ryan and I slept in a pretty much in tact tent that night left over from COVID when they couldn't put 6 strangers in a hut😂 so it was indeed a wonderful sleep facing the sea and hearing the waves 😍

    • @janetteclaassen4103
      @janetteclaassen4103 11 днів тому

      Thank you for explaining all! All made complete sense. Glad you used the tent, much more private and the way you like to hike. Thx for all the tips Di❤

    • @RyansNextAdventure
      @RyansNextAdventure 9 днів тому

      I see Di has replied with an essay 😂 she covered everything nicely. My soaks and shoes were still wet when I got to camp, I put my socks and shoes next to the camp fire that evening which dried them nicely. Then shook all the sand out of the them and they were perfect for the morning hike to the end of the Otter Trail 😊

    Beautiful shot of moonlight on the ocean Ryan! I love camping under a full moon. The moonlight bathes the forest in a soft glow enough to see without my headlamp. I can see why they make hikers take a medical exam. Is that rope climb a permanent feature? You won't have that on the AT, but there are ladders where you have to "mountain goat" your way up a cliff. The hut location and amenities are awesome; comparable to the AT shelter known as the Fontana Hilton overlooking Fontana Lake in North Carolina. Wish I was there with you and Di and your tramily. It is so hot and humid here in Northeast Georgia with no rain in the forecast.

      It is incredible hikibg at night when it’s a full moon, I’ve done it quite a few times now and it is an amazing experience every time. That rope bit was the main trail, there were a few technical bits all along this trail. Definitely need to be careful with your footing as it’s very easy to injured on this type of hike. It’s great that the way this trail is set up you get to hike as a group of 12 people, very cool 😎

      @@november151956 Thanks soo much 🙏 haha, SA has ocean and rivers coming into it on 2 sides but yes, it's uncommon to wade river mouths on hikes here🤩! The coastal forests (jungle like) that we hike through are actually very rare! SA isn't a small country and the only forest we have is in this area and a little near the north east coast. Also the fynbos (sandy path with green, fine-leaved plants is endemic and only occurs in this province (Western cape) and no where else in the world 😍 So you're right, the scenery is amazing and rare which is why the Otter Trail is so iconic and difficult to book!

    I'm an Appalachian Trail section hiker. We have bears, coyotes, racoons that will wander into your camp with farting hikers and mice in the shelters; but no baboons. The shelter mice are legendary. A few years ago I was talking to a fellow section hiker who had stayed in a shelter. She said she woke up in the middle of the night to find mice eating her hair and they had urinated in the roll of toilet paper she had left out!

    • @LifeofDi-alternative
      @LifeofDi-alternative 18 днів тому

      Noooo!! That's hilarious!! I'm scared of the statistical improbability of a negative bear encounter, but the dream to do the AT was our inspiration to start thru hiking😍. From your tale and what we have heard, the hiker family and spirit on the big American hikes is out of this world! Oooo, forgot to mention that we have Genet's on the Otter trail: basically looks like house cats in a way but they hang around camp and sneak to steal food if you aren't very careful...but its also a treat to catch their glowing eyes in your head torch beam and watch the cute wild cats!

      @@LifeofDi-alternative Wow, that's fantastic that you and Ryan are considering doing the AT! I don't know how much you've researched it, but may I suggest watching a hiker's UA-cam channel called Homemade Wanderlust? First to comment again! 😁 I'm simply awe struck by the beauty of this trail. Wish I was there. I would be so tempted to take a zero day and hang a hammock at this hut. Is it allowed? What accounts for the Coca Cola brown color of the rivers? Be careful not to take a misstep while enjoying the views!

    • @RyansNextAdventure
      @RyansNextAdventure 19 днів тому

      Your comments are always much appreciated 😊 it would be awesome to take a rest day at these cabins but because 12 different people hike this trail everyday there’s a different group in the cabins each night, so you have to keep moving along the trail. The brown water is from tannins which is a breakdown in vegetation and goes into the water, it is perfectly ok to drink and tastes good, although it doesn’t look very appetising. We were also in awe whilst hiking along this trail a lot, especially when we went up high on the cliffs.

      There is drinking water and toilets at all the overnight cabins which is awesome. So far I love the Atom Pack, very comfortable. But I haven’t used it for a proper thru-hike yet, carrying my tent and mat etc. but planning to take it for a proper test on a trail very soon 😊 and will be doing a video at some point giving my opinion on the Atom Pack. The ocean views on this trail are breathtaking, glad you’re enjoying them 😎

    nice this fits the rule of thumb I picked up at some point which says that "thru-hiking costs about 1€ a day" roughly

      @RyansNextAdventure 26 днів тому

      I always have in my mind it costs about £1 a mile and the Hexatrek worked out to be about £1.50 a mile. Overall I’m really happy how much the Hexatrek cost me, thru-hiking can cost a lot more of you let it.

    Morning Ryan and Di, hope you’re both good and well! I'm looking forward to seeing more of this adventure, it looks like you had a great time... It always fascinates me how other countries regulate hiking and makes me wonder if permits would put more money in to the maintenance of our national parks and reduce mountain rescue callouts... Thanks for sharing Ryan 👍 🥾⛰️

      Hi Nathan, glad you enjoyed and there’s 4 more episodes to come 😊 even though I was surprised by the medical I do believe it’s a good idea. And the fees and permits are definitely a good idea as a lot of work goes into keeping this trail the way it is, especially with the cabins.

    So glad to be back on the trail with "Ticks" and "Little Chef". Looks like an epic adventure. We don't have a pre-hike medical exam requirement here in the US, although registration and permits are required for hiking in National Parks.

      😂 your message made me smile 😃. The medical was news to me, we have nothing like that in the Uk. We don’t even need permits for our hikes. I do think it’s good to control these beautiful trails some what, a lot of nature along this trail and it should stay like that. Thanks for watching 👍🏼 much appreciated.
