  • I run through all the costs of my 2023 Hexatrek thru-hike.
The Hexatrek is a 3034km long distance path through France which took me 118 days to complete in the summer of 2023.
You can find more information about the Hexatrek here - www.hexatrek.com/en

nice this fits the rule of thumb I picked up at some point which says that "thru-hiking costs about 1€ a day" roughly

I always have in my mind it costs about £1 a mile and the Hexatrek worked out to be about £1.50 a mile. Overall I’m really happy how much the Hexatrek cost me, thru-hiking can cost a lot more of you let it.

Great video Ryan. What's the rule in wild camping in the trail? Looks like it's all good? I hope so as I love it.

Thank you. France is great for wild camping, they call it Bivouac. As long as you set up after 7pm and pack up by 9am and you’re away from urban areas and property you’re all good. I had some incredible wild camping spots in the mountains on this hike, it was just me, my tent and the mountains. It was an incredible experience.

The achievement and life long memories will always outweigh cost but well done for a 4 month self supported trip thats respectable. Those extra 28 nights in accommodation do add up. My first night will be in accomodation after the 20 hour coach trip 😂 and starting the day after. I saw you got straight on with it on the first day.

Cheers mate. Yeah it was a tough first day. After 24 hours of travelling with no sleep i hit the trail and hiked 17 miles. I think I was just really excited to get started with the Hexatrek, when I set my tent up for my first night on trail I was asleep in minutes. Probably a good idea getting accommodation after a lot of travel 👍🏼

Hey Ryan! I'm considering this route too for the summer. Does it have any dangerous parts or segments where I would need special gear or mountaineering skills? Or I can just... walk? Thanks!

No special gear required, some hikers use micro spikes and an ice axe if you plan to do the Alps section before the snow melts. But by July the snow should have melted enough and can be hiked normally. Stage 2 & 3 goes through the Alps and the entire trail follows existing paths, you just have to be comfortable being in the mountains for days at a time, and be prepared for any potential bad weather like storms. Stage 4 & 5 goes through the Pyrenees so again very mountainous but the Hexatrek follows existing paths like the GR10. There’s a couple of alternate paths that can be taken in the mountains that are a bit more technical hiking but they are obvious in the Hexatrek App and have routes to follow to avoid these sections. Hope this info helps.
