- The Hexatrek is an epic 3034km long distance trail that goes through France, including the Alps & Pyrenees.
On day 71 of thru-hiking this incredible trail I got to the canoe alternate route. This is a 21km canoe down the river Tarn on stage 4 of the Hexatrek. This was a lot of fun.
You can find the route and more information about the Hexatrek here: en.hexatrek.com

Thank you
A beautiful change of transportation.
It was a lot of fun canoeing down the river Tarn. It was bloody tough on the arms though 😂 but it was an adventure.
Wow beautiful place and great hiking adventure thanks for sharing your vlog
Thank you
Great adventure. Thanks for taking us along with you on hike
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great video Ryan, when you do the TA you will love paddling the Whanganui River.
The Whanganui river looks epic 👍🏼 definitely be going on a canoe as dying it when I do the Te Araroe 😊 how is your training and preparation for the Hexatrek going?
My life runs way too fast. Learning French has started, real training will start January. Doing multiple day walks in the Snowy mountains after Xmas then down to Tasmania to spend time sailing on the Lady Nelson, a square rigger.
How are you going?
Hi Alan I must have missed this message. I’m good thanks, currently enjoying the comforts of normal life. But not for long, I’m planning on some winter hiking very soon. I miss hiking alot and I don’t want the weather to dictate when I hike. Winter hiking will be a new challenge for me. Can’t wait 😊 the Lady Nelson looks incredible, looks like a little pirate adventure. Let me know how it goes.
Mate! Brilliant! We did 7 days down the Whanganui River on the Te Araroa trail in 2015. When you finally make it to NZ to do our trail you can do the 3 , 5 or 7 day river journey. Great video!
Rene, you beat me by 8 minutes with your comment about the Whanganui River. I was paddling for 4 days, swamped the canoe in the rapids. It was fantastic. How are you and Anna going?
@@alankelly349 We're pretty good. just got back to NZ after our European adventures. Anna and I bailed 3 times down the river......my fault each time. What's your next adventure?
Those rapids and whirlpools were lots of fun Rene.
I am walking the Hexatrek, starting May 15. Thanks for your and Anna's help answering all my questions.
A 7 day adventure down the Whanganui river sounds amazing! The rapids sound a lot more adventurous than the little rapids I had along the river Tarn on the Hexatrek. I’ll definitely be doing that when I do the Te Araroa 😊
After paddling the Wanganui the Tarn is way too tame will skip that paddling.
Ryan, don't you do upper body exercises, when you do long distance walks? I would do press ups dips and pull ups every other day.
I do a lot of strength work inbetween my hikes but not really on a hike, especially a hike of this size, I do stretch and do a couple of push ups in the evening. But the amount of calories burnt daily I find it very difficult to keep muscle on these adventures. In this video it was more a case of I’ve never really canoed before especially 21km down a river. And because I had to get to the end before 6pm i had to Canoe fairly fast. Which was tough. I also have a running background and have run ultra marathons so I’ve just never really had much strength in my upper body. Every time I gain a bit of upper body muscle I do a crazy big adventure and it goes again 😂
Hi Ryan,
Looked a great alternative. Did you have to get a visa for France?
I did have to get a visa for this hike. I got a 6 month tourist visa. The Hexatrek took me a total of 118 days to complete, so had to get a visa to stay in France longer than 90 days.
Ok thanks I am looking to do the trail but looking on the visa form they ask about providing information on accomodation while your there how did you get around it?
@@Harvey493 I wrote a letter explaining that I was coming to France to hike the Hexatrek. I briefly explained that I was wild camping along the route and staying in accommodation as and when I needed it. And that is the normal way to do this thru-hike. Then I just left the bit about accommodation blank. The letter just goes with the application. All they are concerned with is if you have enough funds to support yourself and that you have the proper medical insurance. But just explain exactly what you’re doing in the letter and you should be fine. That’s what I did.
Actually in the accommodation section I think I just wrote ‘the Hexatrek’ 😂 but leaving it blank would be fine. Just cover everything in the letter.
@@RyansNextAdventure ok that makes sense, they seem to want to know your every move nowadays haha I'll just put somewhere in the mountains 🤣
