  • The Hexatrek is an epic 3034km long distance trail that goes through France, including the Alps & Pyrenees.
This is a vlog of day 64 of this incredible thru-hike. France was going through an intense heatwave which made for some very challenging hiking, and I make it to the halfway point of the Hexatrek 😊.

Mate! It's great to see what the trail would have been like had we continued. You're a bloody legend to have hiked 24 miles in such heat. We popped over and did 500kms in Brittany on the GR34, weather was much cooler.

It was such a tough day but I was in the zone and I love a challenge. Had to keep pushing forward because of the water situation aswell. That was a good idea, head north for cooler weather. What was the GR34 like? There is so much hiking in France, I’m definitely going to be doing a lot more on the GR routes 😊

That was a hot, hard day Ryan. I think I may take an umbrella for the heat and the rain.
Have you had many problems with ticks?
Any precautions you have taken? Thanks.

Not a bad idea taking an umbrella, I’ve seen a couple of hikers with one and I may give one a go at some point. Ahhh ticks! Always a nightmare on a hike. So you will see a lot of ticks on stage 1, they seem concentrated together into certain areas. I would see a lot for a few days then none for a few days. I was really paranoid about them and every time I hiked through long grass I would stop and check my legs all the time. Most of the time I caught the little ones crawling up me legs and I just flicked them off. I would do a good tick check all over when I got in my tent and again in the morning. I used my phone camera to record the places I couldn’t see, back etc and the watch it back to check for ticks. I only found a few that had latched on and I had a good pair of tweezers to pick them off. Didn’t see any ticks on stage 2 and on stage 3. I only saw a couple on stage 4. None on stage 5 and I saw 1 on my leg on stage 6 towards the end. So stage 1 is the worst for ticks and it can be a bit stressful at times. But just keep on top of the checking and after stage 1 it’s not bad at all.

Ryan.. loving the vlog. I'm hiking the Hexatrek next year (coming from the U.S.) and would appreciate it if you could tell me how you went about getting new gear (shoes).

That’s awesome, it is an epic trail. Always tricky getting gear on trail. I would look for accommodation about a week ahead of me, a campsite or hostel and phone them up to ask if I could get something delivered to them. I would say I’m staying for the night when I arrive and most of the time they are fine with it. Just have to be carful with the timings. There are some big towns along the way too like Chamonix that stock most things and most brands of trail shoes. You could also take a bus to a bigger town that stock whatever you need. But most of the time I would just get stuff sent to campsites ahead of me on trail and pick it up when I arrived to spend the night. Also a good idea to join the Hexatrek discord group as there’s a lot of French hikers on there that will be able to help aswell. Hope this helps
