My Carnivore Diet Experience: 23-Weeks (160 days completed) Progress Report
This video details my progress in week number 23 of my Carnivore journey.
As a type 2 diabetic, my goal is to use the Carnivore diet/lifestyle to reverse my Type 2 #diabetes. This means my primary goal is not #weightloss (although I'd like to get down to 155 lbs) but lowering and stabilizing my #bloodsugar with an #A1C target of 5.5, reaching a "normal" #triglycerides and #cholesterol level, and increasing my #HDL cholesterol so that I can live a drug-free lifestyle as I move forward toward #retirement where #food replaces my pharmaceuticals and helps my body stave off the #ailments that often come with old age.
This is a new format I am trying. My basic update is first. This is followed by a bonus, #WhatIEatOnCarnivoreForAWeek (#CarnivoreForAWeek) extended cut.
I have added some approximate time codes below if you want to skip any sections.

A Parents Wedding Gift To Their Child... (aka A father's gift to his son on his wedding day)

In this video, I ask for your input with regards to what I should give my son and his bride as a wedding gift. I know that the groom's parents typically pay for the rehearsal dinner. I'm totally up for that. But what I am trying to decide is what to give my son and his bride beyond that to help them kickstart their lives together.

    I never considered putting my cast iron pan on the grill. I'll have to try that. Using it inside makes a terrible mess. :)

      @retirementramblings 3 дні тому

      @jsfarrow69 Thanks for watching and commenting. Using a cast iron skillet works great on an outdoor gas or charcoal grill. You will need to preheat it for ~10 minutes to get it smoking hot to get a good sear on a reverse sear steak. 2-3 minutes per side with about 15-20 seconds for each edge and you get a great steak. Then let the skillet cool down, run it under hot water to wash away the extra grease (maybe use a spatula to remove any particulates like spices that may have stuck to the pan), wipe down with a paper towel, heat on the stove to remove extra moisture, place inside your oven on a rack to cool down, and you are ready to go again... :)

    My husband and I are of the mindsets that if we can help and make things easier, we will. Only you know your children. If they are hard-working, conscientious people who have a fiscal mindset, then giving them a generous wedding gift is just that... a generous wedding gift. I don't subscribe to the idea that they need to struggle to grow closer and learn to work together. The way my husband and I struggled in the beginning was mentally exhausting and emotionally stressful and if we can help ease that burden with a gift, we're happy to do so! Life is hard enough these days. I feel like each parent needs to make the decision based on their own liquidity and their child's situation. Good luck with your decision and congratulations!!!

    As far as the histamine bump to your blood sugar. If it helps you sleep it's worth it for that little increase.

    • @retirementramblings
      @retirementramblings 20 днів тому

      @genuineimpulse9134 Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately it doesn't help me sleep. That said I did an extended fast earlier this week (43:24:33) and that helped drop my numbers. The short term numbers (<30 days) took a small hit but the rolling 90-day has been able to hold steady. While taking the Zyrtec, I may just need to do an extended fast each week to offset the increase. I really want to get to an A1c of 5.5 or less.

  • @genuineimpulse9134
    @genuineimpulse9134 20 днів тому

    Well done! I'm very similar type II motivated. I took metformin, then Trulicity for 18 months, Keto since July 22...mostly carnivore for a year. Similar results as far as losing belly girth, more than weight. A1C from 10.6 to 5.7 in three months of Keto. I came off all diabetes meds 8 months ago.. I'm surprised for all the details of labs and measurements that you've given that you did not report your fasting INSULIN level. A few years into this I'd suggest that's the true measure of metabolic health. Your goal is to be trending towards an ideal level of (2-6), over 25 is diabetes. Your fasting glucose, and A1c both measure glucose. It does not measure the more damaging fructose levels and will give you a better metric to track your (healing) levels of insulin resistance. Hyperinsulinemia is sort of like always driving your car in second gear. You CAN go 70 mph in second gear. It probably won't kill the engine one time or even in a few weeks. But no mechanic would recommend it the long term health of your engine. I have Dr. Ken Berry book common sense labs. When I had to pay a few hundred dollars for the extra ones I was cynical thinking it doesn't matter what it says I'm just going to keep eating meat. In hindsight the information gained was WELL worth the cash and now it's so simple to pick your own labs without needing a doctor. Best wishes on your continued journey of healing.

      @genuineimpulse9134 Thanks for watching and for your comments. Your concern is appreciated. At my 90-day mark on Carnivore I had both my C-Peptide and my Fasting Insulin tested as per Dr. Ken Berry's suggestion. My C-Peptide came in at 2.9 and my Fasting Insulin at 8.2. Both within the normal range. This established my baseline for these 2 blood tests. I will have these checked each time I have blood drawn to understand the long-term trendline for each.

    We use 3.3% in our modeling. We look at only Food & Energy since we own our home outright. We took the last 30 years of inflation averages for both Food & Energy and averaged them out. It's a bit bloated because we do eat more at home and we are using the entire food category which includes dining out... which is a big driver of food inflation. We would rather be a little high on average to ensure we are covered.

    • @retirementramblings
      @retirementramblings 21 день тому

      @OurRetireEarlyJourney Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Can I ask, did you average the inflation rate for food and energy rather than using the CPI so that you would remove the owner's equivalent rent portion of CPI (~60% impact) or did you do it for some other reason? And if you removed it from CPI, did you also discount home appreciation prices from your modeling for the value of your home appreciation going forward (i.e. reducing your net worth) to even out both sides of the equation?

    • @OurRetireEarlyJourney
      @OurRetireEarlyJourney 21 день тому

      @@retirementramblings There is sections on the Gov website for CPI that you can drill down into the individual categories. So we just drilled down into food overall and energy overall and grabbed all the annual data from those 2 sections and put them into google sheets to average them. Those are the biggest inflation impacts on us with the exception of insurances.

    My New Retirement rate assumptions: general inflation 2.5 to 5, Social Security COLA 2.5 to .5, medical inflation 6-7. Extreme inflation is possible like after the shutdown but it doesn't seem to last too long. My optimistic rate of return on investments is only 5 percent. I want to make sure that we can make it if market returns are lousy for years to come. I would recommend making sure that your expenses are realistic.

      @dancurran8977 Thanks so much for your feedback. I appreciate you sharing your assumptions. I feel good about my expenses. I have a very detailed budget that I track against. I am assuming a longevity of 28 years in retirement and in all but my pessimistic projections, I don't run out of money before end of life. With my pessimistic projections, I run out when I am in my mid-80s. Not a good place to be. I am also using a conservative rate of return on my investments. Thanks again. -S-

    If you are having a histamine reaction you may want to consider looking into low histamine foods. I have the same issue and have had to eliminate all forms of pork and dairy. Both are very high in histamines. Just an idea. I am T2D as well as Histamine overload and using carnivore to control as well.

    • @retirementramblings
      @retirementramblings Місяць тому

      @marseeya66 Thanks for the tip. I will consider it...I assume since you stated all forms of pork, that includes bacon. The 2 things I would have a really hard time is eliminating is bacon and cheese. I have bacon virtually every day and the only dairy I consume is cheese (like Feta, Dubliner, & White American). Are you including butter in dairy? Thanks again!

    Real carnivores can lick their ass. Human "carnivores" just talk out of it...You lost 12kg in 18 weeks? That's slow AF!

    • @retirementramblings
      @retirementramblings Місяць тому

      @ceeemm1901 The goal was reduced blood sugar, not weight loss. Carnivore helped me reduce my A1c from 8.5 to 5.6 in 18-weeks (that's a 34% reduction in average blood glucose on a rolling 90-day basis and it drastically reduces the probability of complications from Type 2 diabetes). As for weight loss, if rapid weight loss was my goal I would just do low-carb with weekly extended fasts of 32-48 hours. The weight would then "fall off". There are many examples of individuals doing this and loosing 100+ lbs in short order.

    Solid budget. Car insurance & food expenses are the only 2 areas where you might be able to save additional money. We use Amazon subscriptions a lot for household items & food to save on costs. We are not planning on having life insurance upon our retirement. We understand though why you have it. We are planning on having enough money in case one of us passes that the other will be okay. It will make us work a little longer to have that security but its worth it to us.

    • @retirementramblings
      @retirementramblings Місяць тому

      @OurRetireEarlyJourney Thanks for watching and commenting. I recently shopped my insurance because my homeowners renewal went up by over 70% (not a typo) with no changes or claims and the auto insurance went up by ~13%. I shopped 9 different insurance companies (Amica, Farmer's, Allstate, Travelers, Nationwide, Auto-Owners, State Farm, Progressive, and American Family); I ended up switching to State Farm although it was a toss-up between State Farm and Travelers. The main drawback with Travelers was their IntelliSense app requirement but they were the least expensive on the auto component. To control costs it looks like I will need to shop insurance every year now. Apparently, most insurance companies now offer a new client discount that goes away after the 1st year guaranteeing an increase. Like you, I do use Amazon/Prime for many items but I also comparison shop my local grocers and big box stores before purchasing to make sure I am getting the lowest cost at the time I need the item. And looking back, if I had to do it again, I probably would have bought 20-year level term insurance in my 20's, renewed it in my 40's and invested the savings between the term and whole life costs in the S&P 500 (VOO or SPY). If my wife and I had had the discipline to do this, I am sure I would have come out ahead but we used whole life as a forced savings mechanism with tax free growth. Best of luck on your life/financial journey!

      @retirementramblings Місяць тому

      @CoachRoseAJCarnivoreGirl4Life It's so simple and so much less expensive than buying the prepackaged snacks plus you can control the salt content or any potential "flavorings" that you want to add so you can make it as clean or "dirty" as you like. Plus you can try alternate cuts of meat like New York Strip that they sell pre-sliced at Costco and Sam's Club or brisket, etc. In that way, you can control the fat to protein ratio of the jerky.

    Hi there! I enjoyed the view of your lovely garden and hearing the birds singing in the background. I have rosacea too and it is also being stubborn. I am three plus weeks carnivore and I expect it to be gone eventually. I’m wondering in your case if the few veggies a d bit of onion might be holding you back from it clearing it up?? Anyway good luck!

    • @retirementramblings
      @retirementramblings Місяць тому

      @Barbara-jc9ot Thanks for your comment and concern. I keep a daily journal of everything I eat. I did not start adding back any vegetables until day 89 of Carnivore when I tried 2 Baby Bella mushroom caps grilled; I did not try another vegetable until day 97 when I tried a small amount of grilled onion. I also tried 1/2 cup of steamed asparagus that same day. I tried asparagus again in butter on day 99; I then had 2 Baby Bella mushroom caps grilled on day 103 and some grilled onion on day 104; I had Baby Bella mushroom caps grilled on day 106; 1/2 cup of Broccoli in butter on day 108 and again on day 109; Then a small amount of grilled onion on day 111 and finally 1/2 of a grilled/charred red pepper on day 114. So you can see that my total vegetable intake has been minimal and limited to the last 28 days and I was 100% strict carnivore for the first 89 days. During that 89 day period, my Rosacea got worse and I also developed a skin rash that I just had biopsied (that started at the end of week #2). I will share the results of the biopsy in this week's video. But I will say that the Dermatologist instructed me to go on a 10-day regimen of Doxycycline 100 mg 2x per day and also to resume using Soolantra (Ivermectin) to control the Rosacea. For me, the Doxy make a huge difference. I know that others like Bella, the steak and butter gal, was able to reverse her Rosacea on Carnivore but I believe it took an extended period of time to do so. I expect my skin to get better over time but as I have years of stored fat that contains "toxins" that are released as I lose weight, I am not surprised that I have skin conditions. Skin is the largest organ of the body and probably the path of least resistance for expelling the "toxins". I appreciate the support and good wishes. I hope you achieve your health goals as you move forward on your carnivore journey.

Also retested asparagus yesterday. This time it was steamed first for 15 minutes and then finished by sauteing in butter for about 5 minutes. By doing this, I had no issue. Maybe the extra fat added during the sauteing resolves the gastrointestinal issues. In both cases my blood sugar remained sub-105 during the 2-hours post meal so I am happy :)

      Since I am a Type 2 diabetic, my wife purchased a professional A1c test kit for me for Christmas (ptsdiagnostics.com/a1cnow-plus-system/). The cost of the kit was around $200 and it contains 20 tests so approximately $10 a test. As you are probably aware, A1c is a measure of your average blood glucose over a rolling 90-day period so taking the 1st test before you change your lifestyle for at least 60 days won't really show improvement. At 90 days it should closely approximate what you would see from a lab such as LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics. Now that I have been on Carnivore for 112 days, I can take the test every 2+ weeks to see if I am trending down toward my goal. I started Carnivore with an A1c of 8.5 and it took me approx. 90 days to get into the sub 6.0 range. My goal is to get to 5.5 or less and stay there. This would technically make me a "non-diabetic" but I would still be metabolically challenged. That said, staying at an A1c of 5.5 or less should greatly diminish the increased risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

My knees no longer creek when going downstairs or walking. Depression and anxiety are WAY down (I really don't have a way to measure this). I had a 45° crease in my left earlobe (sign of heart disease) is almost gone. I sleep much better; according to my Galaxy Watch 5 I'm averaging a sleep score of 80/night. @landerspolimis3690 Thanks for the comment; I am being very careful to monitor what I eat and the corresponding results. So far I am good with adding in small amounts of grilled onion; small amounts of grilled cremini / baby bella mushrooms; up to 1/2 of a sliced avocado, and up to 1-cup of steamed brocolli with melted pastured butter; These additions are limited to 1 item per day to maintain carbohydrates less than 10 g per day; asparagus is still a TBD. I purchased another bunch this week to test. If any stomach / gas issues arise, it will make my "do not eat" list. I also purchased a single red bell pepper to try charred on the grill (again < 1/cup will be consumed); Thanks for your comment and concern.

    • @retirementramblings
      @retirementramblings 2 місяці тому

      @sharonchristensen5753 (Sharon): people usually fall into two camps when starting carnivore. 1 camp has "explosive" diarrhea because their body is releasing large amounts of retained water that is no longer required when on Carnivore. These folks definitely need to up their electrolytes because they will be flushed out during the first 2-3 weeks (especially potassium and magnesium). The other group is like yourself. Your body is actually consuming all the nutrition from the foods you are eating so there is not much left as waste and since you are not consuming fiber (from vegetables) there is a minimal amount to excrete. Before carnivore I was very "regular" and would often go multiple times per day. Now on Carnivore, sometimes I can skip a day or 2 without going. That said, if you are concerned about it, the simple fix is to increase your fat intake, especially melted/liquid fat, like butter. I make brown butter bites (search youtube for KetoGenic Woman and brown butter and you will see how simple it is to make) that are 1 tablespoon each. I keep them in the refrigerator in wax paper and consume them as a savory snack (like eating a caramel). Eat 1 or 2 of these or melt some butter and dip your cut up steak pieces into the butter before eating and this should address your problem and help you to go. If you do this, do stray too far from the bathroom. It can be pretty quick acting.

    We have Verizon Home Internet for $50/Month. Verizon usually has combo deals with phone lines but I have Mint Mobile for $15 a month per line. It's not unlimited data but I hardly use phone data because home wifi covers it. Regarding insurance, my rule of thumb is if I see them on TV commercials they charge too much. In California we have a couple lower cost insurers. Our state's insurance department compares rates for a typical car. Your state may do the same. My car insurance includes roadside assistance for a couple dollars a year. Are you paying for AAA? Regarding cars, it sounds like you have two cars. We only have one car for a while now. You are doing a good job tracking your budget!

    • @retirementramblings
      @retirementramblings 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for your comment. I appreciate the feedback. I am paying for AAA. I get more value from them then just the roadside assistance so its definitely worth it to me. We do have 2 cars (actually my wife has a 2022 SUV and I have a 2007 truck); When we both retire, we may downsize to 1 vehicle - hers; that's what my brother and sister-in-law did as well. I'll check out Verizon Home Internet. I haven't looked at them. I use Visible by Verizon for a flat $25 per month per phone now. It provides the best coverage in my area. We have tried others (such as the T-Mobile Magenta plan) but always end up with dropped calls and traditional Verizon is just too expensive if you are not on their family plan with 4+ phones.
