    Good honest findings here Tom. Good to see you not just blindly jump on the Springbank fanboy bandwagon. (not to say I'm not a fan as I absolutely love the stuff and just wish I could get my hands on some more!). Interesting you say about temperature. I've never really noticed it before, but if I'm honest, if I think a whisky tastes different from one taste to the next, I just put it down to my taste buds and never really thought about temperature difference. One famous whisky expert, Jim Murray, even heats his whisky up by putting his glass in a bowl of boiling water before drinking!

    • @TheCrumbyBeard
      @TheCrumbyBeard 2 дні тому

      Yes I do, certainly when drinking them off camera. Occasionally I do it when filming if I think it’ll really help but I often find water helps less on a fresh bottle as it can amplify some of that ethanol burn that needs time and oxygen to dissipate.

    The whisky has just oxidised in the bottle which all whiskies do over time. It will change again over more time which isn't a problem. Temperature variation in the UK won't harm the whisky, just don't leave it in direct sunlight which will really alter the flavour to the point of no return.

    • @TheCrumbyBeard
      @TheCrumbyBeard 2 дні тому

      They’re all kept in the dark for 99% of the time so no worries there. Will be interesting to see if this changes back again as the temperatures drop. Cheers!

  • @colourlessbluethings
    @colourlessbluethings 4 дні тому

    I'm not totally convinced by this theory. Temperature is a factor in the drinking experience for sure but I suppose the fill level and time has played a bigger role here. The first bottle I had, I was living in Vietnam (not exactly cool) and it was whopper. It'll be interesting to see your updates in the autumn and winter.

    • @TheCrumbyBeard
      @TheCrumbyBeard 2 дні тому

    Here in the UK it's a great alternative to either Jack Daniels #7 or Jim Beam white label with all three being the 80 proof budget options from three of the biggest heritage distillers in America, if I had the choice (of which I do) I would choose BT over JD or JB on any given day ! Besides the fact that I do currently have three bottles in my collection whereas I don't have either of the JD or JB offerings, that speaks volumes really ! Easy drinking, smooth tasting, and a classic bourbon at a great price (normally around the £19 mark at most supermarkets) which is a great introduction to any new bourbon drinker and makes for a great daily sipper for any bourbon aficionado. The nearest I've ever got to it is the Evan Williams black label, which although it is smooth and full of all those classic bourbon flavours it does however lack that certain something (mainly finish tbh) that BT offers. For me (here in the UK anyway) there is no better option for a budget friendly, low proof and has those classic bourbon flavours than the Buffalo Trace Kentucky straight whiskey. Personally I'd love to get hold of a 90 proof version just to try it and see how it fairs at the higher proof point but alas ! Here in the UK it's a hard beast to get hold of and if you do it's pretty darn expensive. It's a staple in my collection (if you hadn't already guessed that, lol), it's so easy drinking it's dangerous......even at just 80 proof, lol.

    • @TheCrumbyBeard

    Always partial to a single malt, I remember going on detachment to RAF Machrihanish, now Campbelltown airport, back in the eighties. One of my colleagues picked up what looked like a milk crate of Springbank. Unlabeled bottles and pretty much clear, it was awful. The only thing I've ever had that was worse was Zivania in Cyprus, highly alcoholic dish water!

    Se puede cambiar el corcho o ta lapa de las botellas por una hermetica y se conserve mejor cuando tienes media botella, servirá usar el gas que utilizan en las botellas de vino tinto? Saludos y grax

    • @TheCrumbyBeard
      @TheCrumbyBeard 8 днів тому

      Yes you could change the lid or cork, however many bottles have different sizes so this may be difficult. I'm sure flushing the oxygen out of the bottles as is done with wine would work, many times whiskies are improved over time with a small amount of oxidation so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. He traducido esta respuesta en Google para usted, por lo que puede que no sea del todo precisa: Sí, puede cambiar la tapa o el corcho, sin embargo, muchas botellas tienen diferentes tamaños, por lo que esto puede resultar difícil. Estoy seguro de que eliminar el oxígeno de las botellas como se hace con el vino funcionaría; muchas veces los whiskies mejoran con el tiempo con una pequeña cantidad de oxidación, por lo que no necesariamente lo recomendaría.

    Well I finally got around to doing a simultaneous 'head to head' along with you in this video, I must admit that the WR has a certain something to it, whether that's the vanilla on the nose, the sweetness on the palate or even the medium finish with the gentle woody heat I don't really know, it's a lovely pour and one that seems to get better as I go through the bottle (tbh I wasn't overly impressed with it when I first opened it) which has been open now for about 2 months. As for the WRDO, well it's very hard to believe that they both started life as the same thing ! I don't get the same vanilla on the nose in fact it's a bit more of those darker dried fruits, a hint of chocolate mixed with a tad of char, the taste is so rich and decadent (as you quite rightly stated) and the finish is a very pleasant oaky spice which is more drying than the WR (which is I suppose largely due to the double barrel process). For the money the WR is a great pour as it is in the sub £30 category and hits differently enough from the old favourites (WT101 & BT) to make it a viable purchase for when you want something different but then again it's only a few quid away from Eagle Rare which is an entirely different beast and one that I do feel trumps it. As for the WRDO, well at £45 (what I paid for mine) it does fall into the same price category as the WT Rare Breed (again I paid £45 for mine) but it holds it's own in much the same way that the standard WR does when compared to WT101 as they're both different enough from each other to be enjoyed without trying to compare the two too deeply. Okay the WTRB is a proof monster and has such a flavour package which makes it hard to beat but the WRDO with it's lower rye content cooks up enough different flavours to make it equally as enjoyable in the right situation/moment. The WR will definitely be replaced when I finish the bottle whereas the WRDO will be all down to getting it for the right price, I wouldn't pay anything over £45 for another bottle but I'd happily snap up a backup bottle for anywhere between £35 to £40 ! Thanks for taking the time to make the video, but I will get around to doing the Sazarac rye Vs the Bulliet rye (swig-a-long video, lol) next as I've managed to get both bottles now, cheers Tom, you're a star !

    • @TheCrumbyBeard
      @TheCrumbyBeard 7 днів тому

      Haha! Excellent summary there! In general I'm with you on all of that, I do have their weird thing on occasion where WR is just the right thing at the right time but it's certainly not as common as say Eagle Rare which is just hard to beat now we can get it more reasonable prices. Cheers!

    Thanks for sharing this. Planning on buying one of the Grizl bikes soon myself, so watching this was super helpful.

      Glad it helped! I'm a few months in now and still absolutely love it, haven't changed anything yet. I'd absolutely buy a non-electric Grizl should I have the need after my experience so far.

    Prefer King Goblin at 6.6% maybe that is about the same as the original Ruby?

      I did a video comparing the two and eventually mixing them, the mix is a lot closer to the OG ruby that either on their own. Cheers!

    I like your review and agree. I prefer a small ice cube in my bold bourbons and it transforms into a much more mellow yet delicious drink. Cheers 🥃

      Everyone has to drink their whiskey how they like it, that is the only rule! I only opt for ice when in a pub or bar for some reason, very rarely at home unless it's an Old Fashioned. Cheers!

    Definitely Dickel and it's legally a bourbon. Think about Tennessee whiskey as bourbon plus. IE a subcategory.

      TN Distilling Co has only been around for about 8 years.

      Absolutely, I personally see Tennessee as a sub-category of bourbon, but I know others would disagree. Wasn't familiar with TN Distilling before the comment on my other video but sounds like it can't be them. Cheers!

    Lidl now selling the imported/Czech brewed version £1.79 500ml. Seems to be permanent.

    What glasses are you wearing? I can hardly see what it says and I like to know what I'm eating. They should give a free magnifier with each pack. A little expensive would save the planet by changing their packaging, nasty plasticeee type of pack. Other very nice taste . Less packaging and more meat please

    Try a Gruibinger Brunnenbier...it is also an unfiltered beer from Germany and very very popular. I bet you'll love it very much. It comes in smaller bottles of 0.33 litres with a plop lid.
