Murderous Stories of Inconvenient In-Laws
Murderous Stories of Inconvenient In-Laws
News of the Times Episode 307 | 1837 & 1861
Those pesky n-laws who get in the way of the whole purpose of having gotten married in the first place.
Our first case takes place in 1839. Charles Bartlett, who works as an entertainer with a travelling show, has met and married a young girl, scarcely 18, who brings with her an initial dowry of £45! Upon her mother’s death, she will inherit another £50!
Sadly, the mother-in-law is shot at from behind within a month of the marriage. Charles was the last person to see her alive…
Our second case from 1861 takes place in the peaceable parish of Anglesey, North Wales. Richard Rowlands has married the recently widowed daughter of a prosperous farmer. Unfortunately, the father rather despises Richard and gives him a deadline to pack up his things, and his new family, and remove himself from his property. There is one day left before he is required to leave when coincidentally, the father-in-law is beaten to death on a lonely pathway as he is walking home.
Two murderous cases of inconvenient in laws is today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.
We hope you enjoy the show!
Hosted by Robin Coles.

      One of our team used to see Anglesey in the distance from her front window for a few years. Such a beautiful place - all low key, a great family holiday location. You aare right - the local population were truly shocked. Interestingly, as they wanted to protect the children, one of the richer families opened their grounds and invited the children on the hanging day. The place was flooded with tourists to view the hanging, but the papers do not relay any kind of spectacle satisfaction as on other cases we have reviewed. Also interestingly, he had Calcraft as executioner - that is a hike in terms of travel! Have a brilliant week coming up!🙏

    These two cases are two of the most "despicable," men who murdered their in-laws. First case, I believe Charles murdered his mother-in-law strictly for financial gains. Second case, Richard murdered his father-in-law for land property, I honestly don't believe either man loved the women that they married, period! Thrilled that they both received the death penalty. Do you know whatever happened to Charles' wife? Do you know whatever happened to Richard's wife and children? Great investigating, presenting, backstories, illustrations, photos and videos, as well. Take care 🦋

      We think so too! Both cases sound like a rather mercenary use of the woman to get money or propery. We do not know what happened with either of the discarded women. Mrs Bartlett - we would hope her father would take her in. Mrs Rowlands and her extensive family - not sure if she wold have gained the farm? She had at least 1 boy who would have been of working age. If she had the farm, which sounded prosperous, that would have been an asset. There was some speculation in the papers - how much did she know of the murder plot of her father? - but this did not legally go anywhere and was not pursued. However if neighbours thought she was involved, she would have had a tough time remaining in the village - or even Anglesey itself which is not that big. Thank you, as always!🙏

    • @newsofthetimes
      @newsofthetimes 2 дні тому

      Sorry - we have no further records on Hannah daines. We would expect that her older son, who was gainfully employed, would have helped his mother. The younger son was nearing an age when he too would have started employment. We would expect that she would have continued to suffer the effects of having had aresenical poisoning - the impact could last a lifetime and could include partial paralysis.You are quite right - the family would certainly financially be hit in a devastating way. It could also have an impact on a family socially - like a taint. However, it was a small community and she was the victim. It sounded as if the village gathered around her in her hour of need - we would like to think they did so again.🤔Thank you - great question! thank you for your support!🙏

I couldn't comprehend how the jury acquitted Charles on the first charges of poisoning his young daughter and a woman who was a friend of the family whom both died. Thrilled that the second charge of attempted murder of his wife, Hannah eventually sealed his ultimate fate. Glad he decided to confess to his heinous crimes. Thank you - glad you liked! 🤗We do know that the much desired Mrs Lloyd does indeed get married probably thanking her lucky stars that she did not end up as the next Mrs Daines. We do not know what happened to hannah Daines. She would have continued to feel the effects of rthe arsenic most likely - arseneic poisoning was not something that tended to just go away. We hope her older son who was gainfully employed would have helped his mother. We do not know what happend with the younger son. He bounced back faster than any of the others so hopefully he was not too badly physically impacted. As for the trial - yes, he got off the first time (agreed - unbelievably) because of the lack of motive! No one had seen him place poison in the water - his son had not yet come downstairs. With no motive, and a highly circumstantial case, the case was missing parts - as the prosecutor alluded to at the time. But, the motive in the attempted killing of his wife was clearly established and it was an easy case to prosecute. He was utterly contrite in prison (he had before been heavily involved in the methodist community), wishing he could take it all back. Murder is a rather difficult one to take all back...🤔Thank you as always!🙏

      Your point was exactly why he got off with his daughter and Elizabeth M - what was the motive? 🤔He had been known as an "ok" father - he did not beat his children even if he was not overtly affectionate with them. In the cell, he broke down, confessed and was mightily contrite wishing he could take it all back. We think he was having a bit of a breakdown. It reminds us a bit of that old old film "Ten" with Dudley Moore becoming obsessed with Bo Derrick (?). Poor Hannah. She would most likely have felt the physical repurcussions for the rest of her life. Arsenic poisoning does not just go away. What a "despicable," man Reed was and I'm being polite about his description. He was was a liar, deceptive, womanizer and murderer, too. He deserved to get the death penalty for murdering a young pregnant woman whom he had promised to marry. The fact that he was married with eight children plus allegedly married but not legally to another young woman who had a baby by him. I can't comprehend how he was able to get away with his deceptive behavior as long as he did. Do you know whatever happened to his wife and eight children? Also, the young woman and her baby who Reed supposedly married? Great investigating, presenting, backstories, illustrations, photos, and videos, as well. Take care 🦋

    • @newsofthetimes
      @newsofthetimes 4 дні тому

      Yes, he was fairly awful! 😡 He must have had some charms to successfully woo all the women. And, as we said, there were rumours that he had had a prior relationship with Florence's married sister (but, this could just have been salacious gossip - it did not come up in the trial). The sister who introduced the two of them would probably have felt that guilt all her life.😔No, we do not know what happend to the two women sadly. The first wife who forgave him and visited him in prison would have seen her life destroyed. No idea how she would have been able to support 8 children on her own. The second "wife", which was never legal, we are hoping her family would have taken her in - although they had been opposed to him. Great lesson here - listen to friends and family if they do not like your planned partner! This came up in the Coachford case too! Thank you for yoru support, as always!🙏

    This was truly a heartbreaking story about the horrific murders of father and son plus two attempted murders of one household. Rush, had a grievance against the Jeremy's father and son about finances and property but it was absolutely no cause for him to try to kill the entire Jeremy family, period! I'm thrilled that he received the ultimate price for his heinous acts. Was Rush mentally insane when he committed these murders and attempted murders? Do you know whatever happened to the nine children of Rush? Great investigation, presentation, backstory, illustrations, photos, and videos, too. Take care 🦋

    • @newsofthetimes

      Yes, he was certainly a shady charachter! His agreement had been with the father of the two Jermy's - a reverend. But, what was found out when he died and Jermy snr took over (who was a recorder, so he had a good knowledge of the law) was that his father had been being cheated by Rush. Therefor a new agreement was made which was at higher rates and that is what seems ot have really bitten Rush and started the poor relations! And all of his shady deals were coming due at the same time - financially he was practically bankrupt. No sorry - we do not know what happened with his nine children. Pre about 1860 papers tended more towards the short and sweet news articles - there would almost never be any follow up. Thank you, as always, for your unswerving support!🙏🙌🌟

      Thank you! We are not sure what the name of them would be in the states? The recorder manages the court cases - allocates which court case goes to which judge and which court case happens when - so quite an important role. In some of the way way way out in the woods places in earlier times, if there was no proper judge about the recorder would act as judge. We have done one case where that is what happened (but sorry, do not remember which one!). Thank you so much for your kind support! We love to hear from our American cousins across the pond!🙌✨
