News of the Times Episode 285 | 1880 & 1890
Today’s episode looks at two series of killings, 10 years apart, by the same family.
The first murder takes place in Hertfordshire with Thomas Wheeler blowing the head off of the man he intends to rob. Descriptions speak of brain matter on the ceiling and walls. A very sad case, but not so uncommon. His 14 year old daughter takes her father’s execution badly.
Almost exactly ten years later and the daughter is involved in a truly horrific double murder of her love rival and baby. The case was considered so shocking, it remained as a display at Madame Tussaud’s for years.

I like the very Victorian summing up by the Judge in Mary’s trial, it just reeks of sanctimony.
Ah yes. We Brits are ace at sanctimonious ramblings! Especially during Victorian times! Mary pearcey / wheeler was a werid one for sure. 🤪
This was truly a heartbreaking story about a father and daughter murderers. First case, Thomas obviously was guilty of murder and burglary and later confessed to his heinous acts. Second case, Mary murdered a woman and her baby because of a jealous love rivalry of a womanizing married man is beyond any common sensibility. It's interesting that Thomas said he hoped none of his children would follow in his footsteps. Do you know whatever happened to Mrs.Wheeler and her children? Also, whatever happened to Mrs. Hogg? Great investigating, presenting, backstories, illustrations, photos, and videos, as well. Take care 🦋
The original Mrs Wheeler quite possibly was relieved that he was executed! He did not sound like a very nice man in general at all, although Mary was quite clearly close with him. Phoebe Hogg and her baby, confusingly also called Phoebe Hogg, was the one who was so horrifically murdered, then placed on top of her own baby, little phoebe, in the pram and pushed away. It is possibly hard to imagine, but Victorian prams were MUCH bigger. Policemen actually testsed that a full adult could squeeze into the pram in question and they could!. So mary was pushing n a pram, in order, crushed baby phoebe, with dead mother with slit throat phoebe on top of baby phoebe. Then Mary wheeled the pram, dumped mother phoebe in one place followed by baby phoebe n another along with the pram. How gruesome is that?? super super super creepy!

Well, the saying is like father, likes son!! In the case of the Wheelers, it was like father, like daughter!! Mary NEVER seemed to learn from the mistakes of her father!! What a stupid, evil woman!!

Also from the USA. Today if the UK still hanged prisoners much would have been made by her defense of her trying to hang herself ie- lack of blood flow to the brain and the effects that it could have. I myself feel that while it is dated the judge made a true statement
