  • A Scottish Murder Love Triangle - Frightful Fridays
    News of the Times Episode 281 | 1765
    1765 County Forfar Scotland and 21 year old newly married Katharine Nairn, wed to 40ish bookish Thomas Ogilvie, is the topic of gossip within the household and the community. Dashing younger brother Lieutenant Patrick Ogilvie has arrived back from East India and a warm, and some say, intimate relationship has quickly developed between Katharine and Patrick. A dangerous game as any kind of relationship between the two would legally be termed incestuous with severe penalties involved.
    As the relationship grows, Patrick is banished from the house. A plan is hatched between the two lovers that would not only allow them to be together but also enable Patrick to be the new Laird with title and inheritance.
    But waiting in the wings is the partner of the third brother watching, spying and reporting. With both brothers gone, the youngest brother would become sole inheritor and the new Laird.
    A salacious, tangled love triangle that turned to murder from Scotland 1765 is today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.
    We hope you enjoy the show!
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

    BLIMEY!! What a crazily, scandalous tale!! Poor Thomas suffered a HORRIBLE death, all because of illicit love and the possibility that Patrick coveted the Lairdship!! I assume that Patrick was the father of Katherine's poor child!! I wonder what happened to said child, especially after Katherine ran away and abandoned the baby?! She certainly wasn't Mother Of The Year, was she?!
    Thanks for sharing this Scottish tale, Robin!! ❤💖💞👏👍

      Glad you liked it! We think thsi would hold even in present day as fairly scandalous! Yes, the child (we believe) was Patrick's. We don't know what happened with the child - bless it. Both the Nairn/Nairne and Ogilvie/Ogilvy families were very im[portant families at this time (and possibly still are - no slight intended if that is the case!). Katharinen herself is never caught. She has some spine to manage to escape prison and certain death. Glad you liked the show! 🙏😁

    I wonder why Thomas accepted tea from his wife after he was warned that she and Patrick might try to kill him? Also why didn't Ann go to the authorities as soon as Katherine confided in her?

    • @newsofthetimes
      @newsofthetimes  Місяць тому +7

      Ooooh! Great question! So, that piece of "evidence" came from Anne who, we think, was doing her best to condemn Katharine and Patrick so that her "fiance", the youngest brother Alexander, would be the next in line to be the Laird. At the same time, she was trying to make herself come across as saintly "I warned them". Not sure that she warned anyone! It all seemed a bit odd that Katharine is supposedly going to her and telling her that they are going to kill Thomas. Just too convenient! 🙄A bit of a twsty tale this 😁

    • @TinaFivesten

      @@TinaFivesten Ah! Thomas says it after he has drunk the tea when the servant brings up the same crockery. He has then figured out that he has been poisoned when it is too late. Fairly twisted tale, this!😉

    Good story . Don't think it was fair that homegirl got away...felt sorry for her baby the only innocent one.

    • @newsofthetimes
      @newsofthetimes  Місяць тому +1

      Too true! It always feels wrong when they get away, doesn't it? But, her life would have been something of a shambles. Having no one to use for reference would have made her life incredibly difficult in the social circles she had been accustomed to. No doubt, her family would have nothing to do with her. She survived, but most llikely as an utter outcast who belonged to no world. Yes ndeed - poor little child. 😔

    This was a very intriguing case about adultery of a wife with her husband's brother and husband's "heinous" murder, too. I wasn't surprised about the verdicts of Katherine and Patrick but I wasn't expecting Katherine escaping from prison. Since she was pregnant she was able to extend her sentence and I believe that it ultimately is what saved her. Do you know if the youngest brother inherited his murdered brother's estate? Also, whatever happened to Katherine's baby that she left behind? Great investigating, presenting, backstories, illustrations, photos and videos, as well. Take care 🦋

      Glad you liked the show! 😁 It kicks off our "aristocracy and assassins April" a bit early! Yes, Alexander becomes Laird and he marries Anne! We do not know how complicit Anne was in ensuring Katharine and Patrcik swung - but she got the prize and was married to the Laird. Sorry, we do not know what happened to the poor child - we do not know if any of the two families would have taken care of the child. We think it is rather remarkable Katharine escaping death! That was not something that happened often! Thank you, as always, for your support!
      BTW, we THINK we know what has been going on with yur occassional vanished comment as it has happened to us several times! UA-cam, quite rightly, has a number of measures in place to ensure no one is glorifying death. It may be that some of the comments which of course are just referencing our historical stories were being read by youtube as inappropriate. We have had this happen ourselves when responding to comments where it looks like the comment has been written, it looks like it is there and then you check and it is gone! So we think that may be what has been happening to your good self as we saw it happen to three attempts at a response from ourselves. Hope this helps! 🙏

    What happened to her and her baby?

    • @newsofthetimes
      @newsofthetimes  Місяць тому +1

      Katharine escaped successfully to France, but is not heard from again - at least legally. Her family were quite imporatant - it is doubtful they would have taken a chance of damaging their reputation and finances by harbouring a known convict. As ofr the poor child - we do not know. The child would probably have been named a "bastard" so may not have been takenn in by either family. Very sad for the child. 😢
