News of the Times Episode 282 | 1883
In 1883 Netherlands, Leiden was rocked by the realisation that they had a serial killer on their hands who had been killing for years without anyone suspecting a thing.
Maria van Der Linden, as the British press referred to her, like Helen Jegado, was so kind, so thoughtful, everyone’s auntie, that no one suspected a thing as she speculatively systematically killed over 100.
Her motive initially was gain, but with the ability to decide who lived and who died, it would seem in the end before she was caught, much of the time she was murdering because she could.
We take a look at the person, the crimes and how she was eventually caught, in today’s episode of Serial Killer Saturdays - The Leiden Poisoner.
Hosted by Robin Coles.

This was truly a "horrific," case of a serial murdering woman. I thought Maria was mentally insane but as I later learned she was completely sane. Maria apparently killed for financial gains and whatever else it's hard to comprehend. I'm surprised that she received penal servitude instead of the death penalty! Do you know whatever happened to her two surviving children? Her husband was fortunate that she didn't kill him, he had the good sense to have their marriage annulled. Great investigation, presentation, backstories, illustrations, photos, and videos, too. Take care 🦋
Great questions! 🙌There was no death penalty in the Netherlands - it had been abolished, so a life sentence was the worst that she could get. Weirdly, she kept applying for early release as if she really did not understand the enormity of her actions! No , sorry - we do not know what happened to her two remaining children and her husband. Our guess would be that he moved away. He would have had a hard time staying where he was. There were some questions still hovering over him as to how much he actually had known. He must have surely seen the money that came in upon the various deaths?🤔
It's the Yank here! I see I'm first in the comment section! Jolly good! Hip hip hurrah!! Great video as always!
Top of the morning to you our American cousin! 🎩 Glad you liked the show! We have nearly four hours of murders and mysteries coming your way tomorrow as a special thank you for helping us reach the 2000 subscriber mark and for the easter hols! Popcorn recommended but not required. 😉
She killed on a whim. Truly evil.
Thank you. Enjoyed.
Yes - we know the psychological tests were done on her, but there was something truly wrong with her. So very sad. And multiple murder attempts tried on relatives of her own victims at a wake - it is so perverse! 👺 Next saturday we switch to "Sinister Satrudays". The Mondays episode (and the wednesdays) really do add credence to "truth is stranger than fiction". Have a lovely weekend!🙏
@@newsofthetimes Same to you.
Woah!! Murderous Maria was EVIL!! How could a mother murder her OWN CHILDREN, never mind her PARENTS and people she was supposed to be looking after?! Also, she had the AUDACITY to poison the mourners at the wake of two of her victims?! That's just CRAZY!! I wonder what happened to her husband and her poor remaining children?! I hope they were able to somehow heal and move on with their lives!! At least, they survived to tell the tale!!
Thanks for yet another riveting story, Robin!! ❤💞💖👍👏
Yes - she had certainly turned to the dark side! 👺. It is just sort of so unbelievable. Strangely she was noted for her perceived kindness! That takes a special type of hypocrisy that is rather incomprehensible. 🤔Glad you liked the show! We will be switching over next week to SINISTER SATURDAYS. 😱 Tomorrow is the four hours of murder and mystery as a thank you to all and for the Easter holidays. Mondays case - wow. You could not make it up....😉
@@newsofthetimesLooking forward to Sinister Saturdays!! Are you still going to feature Serial Killers sometimes?! I'll ALWAYS love your content, whatever you do!! ❤💞💖👍👏
@@nadiabrook7871 We are so very appreciative of your positivity!! Yayyy! 🤗Yes, we will certainly still feature serial killers within the saturdays, it just won''t be the primary focus. We still have loads of serial killers in our database, but they are many whch are very similar,. There are some horrific baby farmers, but we have been told in the clearest poossible terms that people in general don't like those stories and we can understand. They are just filled iwth tragedy. 😔 We alsio have loads of drunken annihilate the family and then commit suicide stories - alcohol is usually involved - also incredibly tragic. So, we still have quite a few great stories, but we thought it would be best to not be so reliant on just that one type of story. We hope you understand.♥ Tomorrow wwe have nearly four hours of stories of murder and mystery! This coming week actually has some corkers we think!😉 Thank you, as always for your tremendous support! Really sorry for the delay in our response - members of the team are travelling to visit family. 'Tis the season. 😉
@@newsofthetimes Thanks for the response!! As I said before, I will always love and appreciate your content, no matter what it is!! 💞🤗💖👍❤
Maria was an evil person. She didn't care who she murdered for insurance money or being in control of who lives or dies. Life in prison can be worse than death.😐
We just find it so odd the request for early release! She tried several tmes. It is like there is a complete lack of understanding of what they themselvs actually did. 🤔
Insurance policies were a form of gambling it appears . Interesting
Yes, she was something! She reminds us quite a bit with the serial killer nun episode. Both were known for their kind nature so no one suspected them. Maria did start with insurance schemes but in the end, before she was caught, she just liked to kill.😔
