News of the Times Episode 289 | 1837
1837 County Carlow, Ireland, and Wiilliam McGrath has returned to his home town where he sees his brother, now successfully running their now deceased father’s business. William is filled with anger and resentment.
Staying at his friend’s house, he offers his friend and the father £100 to act as assassins and get rid of his brother, thereby leaving the extensive business and property in the hands of William.
This unique type of case brought in over 2000 visitors in torrential rains to watch the botched hanging.
We take a look at the background, the crime and the capture of the Irish assassins in today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.
We hope you enjoy the show!

What a horrific case of one brother conspiring to murder his brother for financial gains and property. I'm thrilled that the jury convicted William younger brother of Richard and the father Edward of his friend. I'm glad that William admitted that his friend wasn't a co-conspirator after all. Great investigating, presenting, backstory, illustrations, photos and videos, too. Take care 🦋

Glad you liked! It is difficult to find proper assassins woth exchanges of money. We think William settling himself in two days after his brither Richard's disappearance wold be a bit of a tell? He was clearly anxious to move himself in! Thank you as always. 🙏

I have shared your channel with my friends and watch every single one. Sometimes more than once. Well, as they say jolly old England, Tallyhoooo!!!!!

We accept that George was a bit of a prig, so were his mates and really,, if people are just that awful, you just want to go away. Leaving toxic people to themselevs is key to a long and happy life! Thank you so much for sharing our channel with your mates - very much appreciated!! We (think) we have some great things cominhg up. Poor Richard was VERY trusting of William's friend!! He must've been deeply in love with Miss Winn!! Well, William paid with his life for his greed!!
Edward's botched execution sounds ABSOLUTELY horrendous!! I'll bet the executioner was severely reprimanded afterwards!!
Thanks for sharing this rather sad story with us, Robin!! 💕❤💞💖

Glad you liekd the show! It seems really a bit of a daft move to move into the huse like two days after brither has "vanished". Why would this NOT be suspicious? All in all, it does not seem a surprise that they were caught! 🙄

@@newsofthetimes Yes, William wasn't very subtle, was he?! He might as well have walked around with a sign around his neck that read "I MURDERED MY BROTHER FOR THE INHERITANCE!!" 🙄🙄

Thanks for this , yes , people were obsessed here by land they owned especially farmers, I remember this as a child although it’s not as prevalent now
There was a movie made called “The. Field “ about this 👍🏻

Hello Irish cousin! 🙋‍♂Yes, indeed! 👍We have seen this before in osme of the other Irish cases we did last month for St Patrick's day. Interestingly, the same held true in Hungary with a whole village of women (village of assassins) killing off various husbands and relations to get thier hands on the land. For this particular story, William did not waste any time making himself at home! A bit of a giant green pointy arrow with the disappearance of his brother. What made this case more unique was the payment of £100 for an assasssin. This is possibly more prevalant than we have been able to find in the papers in general. Thank you - really appreciate the insight!🙌
