Newgate Nasties and Bloody Broadsides - Crime History Collection
News of the Times Episode 300 | 1684 - 1831
In the 18th century, every household that could read was sure to have a copy of the Newgate Calendar. Initially, the Newgate Calendar was a collection of the Broadsides - the 1 sheet penny accounts of criminals sold to the public at executions.
Relating stories of criminals of their day, and not just of stories from infamous Newgate Prison, the Newgate Calendar was one of the first true crime compendiums. In today’s history compilation, we look at 9 stories from the Newgate Calendar and the Broadsides. These include
1684: Serial killer Elizabeth Ridgeway 04:22:07
1703: Mary Chanel and her enforced loveless marriage 15:09:20
1708: Privileged gambler and murderer, the Marquis de Paleotti 27:10:22
1721: Good for nothing Matthew Clarke and the infamous simultaneous slitting of a girl’s throat whilst he was kissing her 31:53:13
1737: John Collins’s absolute appalling murder of a girl who snubbed him rivalling the ripper killings in terms of butchery 39:17:03
1752: Infamous Elizabeth Jeffries who got her lover involved in the murder of her husband - a case still famous to this day 48:40:14
1761: what starts off as a cultural misunderstanding ends up in various body parts hidden around a house 1:15:14:09
1809: Esther Hibner, nicknamed “The Monster” by the public and the press, due to her sadistic cruelty. The first female hanging of Calcraft, famed long and painful death executioner. 1:50:13:19
1831: Eliza Ross convicted of “burking” - killing a victim in order to sell the body to the dissectors. The primary prosecution witness was her 12 year old son. 2:00:05:10
