  • Two Tales of Revenge
    News of the Times Episode 302 | 1849 & 1934
In todays episode we look at two tales where mothers feature strongly as does revenge.
Our first story from 1849 sees young John Ward making advances to the household servant which is not reciprocated. With his wish to marry the servant, the mother steps in forcibly with fatal consequences.
Our second story from 1934 is highly unusual in several ways: the age of the bride, the carrier pigeon, the strong role of the mothers, and the twisting path of the trials. Young Violet is not finding married life something she wants to do, so she goes back to mother. The news does not go down well with her new husband.
Mothers and revenge are the main themes in today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

That John Ward in the first story acted like a spoilt brat!! Most brats stamp their feet when they don't get their own way, but this fool goes a step further and murders his mother!! He then expects the poor maid to run off with him like nothing had happened!! It's a good job that the young lady was no fool and managed to escape!! In fact, she had a lucky escape in more ways than one!!
I cannot believe that Reginald ACTUALLY GOT AWAY WITH MURDER!!!!
Thanks for sharing these VERY sad stories, Robin!! ❤💕👍💞👏

yes, we also found the Woolmington case astonishing. 😲The notes, the sawn off shotgun - how pre-meditated is that? The reason was a leagl one - the judges in the first two cases had mis-directed the jury. Ummm, we are not legal eagles but we think this he was incredibly lucky legally. Personally, obviously, he paid in a different way. 😔

Thank you - glad you liked it! Yes, sad all around really. There was a rollout impact with many people, aside from poor Violet, from his actions. 😔

The two cases of revenge were intriguing and yet sad, too. First case, this "despicable," young man who tried to seduce the young housemaid that worked for his mother deserved his ultimate death sentencing for murdering his mother. In the second case, this young man murdered his young 17 year old wife because she wouldn't come back to him, who was physically abusive to her. I can't comprehend how he was eventually acquitted of the heinous murder of his wife, it's beyond unbelievable! Do you know whatever happened to the housemaid in the first case? I'm surprised that Violet's mother didn't raise her infant grandson. Great investigation, presentation, backstories, illustrations, photos, and videos, too. Take care 🦋

Great questions! Sorry, the 1849 story - we have no follow ups. Yes, we found the case really astonishing too. The letters, the sawn off shotgun - surely this bespokes premeditation as he was convicted not once but twice? He was a military man, so we find the whole "accidental" shooting to be a stretch. But, we do not know about guns - maybe this happens all the time? He got off legally. The two previous judges were rebuked and told, essentially, that they had misdirected the jury, so he was free. We think there probably would not have been an issue with the sentencing if the prosecution had gone for manslaughter? But all this aside, he had a rather short life. Being a boxer with a travelling fair sounds like a difficult life. And it was short. The whole thing was just very sad. As the child waslegally his, he had the right to choose what to do with the child. Possibly his own mother was physically unable. He punished his mother-in-law by taking the baby away from he, so she loses both her daughter and her grandson at his hands. All very tragic really. 😔

Well done Robin and team💯 My family immigrated from Wrington Somerset way before the 1930's , more like 1700's.

Sad but intriguing stories. In my opinion, it boils down to control. Thank you for sharing.

A wise one with profound psychological insightfulness. 🤔Both cases are rather sad. Althugh Woolmington escaped legally, we are uncertain he was able to overcome his actions., He did, in essence, try ot escape everything and living life as a boxer in a travelling fair is a tough life. Possibly he was trying to punish himself if he would not be punsihed legally. We do think he was most certainly remorseful after (but not enough to let his child be raised by the grandmother).

There are a few Casswell's that write books, which one, and which book, are you referring to? And what are we being fooled by?

Very sorry - not sure what you are referring to? The story came direct from the papers - we always only get the stories direct from the papers. (the first story was also in the Newgate Calendar - like papers of the time). Sorry - we are confused but we have only just woken up😉
