  • The Babington Plot Against Queen Elizabeth I
    News of the Times Episode 299 | 1586
    It is 1587 and England is undergoing simmering tension within the country, and externally from international pressure. The Pope has ex-communicated Queen Elizabeth I and actively encourages true Catholics to remover her from the throne. The figure head for the opposition is the imprisoned Mary Stuart, Queen of the Scots.
    This and other failed attempts to oust Queen Elizabeth leads to the infamous Babington Plot within England contrived in part by the potential assassin, Anthony Babington, who is, actually the unknowing puppet of Queen Elisabeth’s spymaster, Sir Francis Walsingham
    This story involves spies, counter-espionage, double agents, royalty and treachery leading to the execution of an anointed queen. We take a whistlestop look at this complicated story. The buildup, the players within this drama, the trap and the capture, that ultimately lead to Mary Stuart’s final doom.
    The Babington Plot against Queen Elizabeth I is today’s episode of Sinister Saturdays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

    Thank you for sharing this story. I enjoyed your story very much. It interesting that they had code breakers back in those times. Espionage has always existed since man was born. Thank you for sharing.

      Thank you! 🙏he was like the ultimate code breaker as Mary spoke several languages. Here is something that we did not include (becauee it is already a bit complicated). When Elizabeth herself was under house arrest in her younger years under her half sister (confusingly also called Mary) she used to sign her name enormously largely at the bottom on her letters to ensure that no one could "add" anything to her letter to set her up. Mary, in her missives, was not as canny. It has been argued, historically, that the master code breaker - who was also a brilliant forger - , under the direction of walsingham was the person to make Mary's supposed request for the names of the 6 individuals so that she might later reward them. 🤔Hmmmm. And, if he did indeed do this - was it actually Walsingham, through the codebreaker, who gave approval to Babington to start the plot? In essence - was Mary correct in stating she had not ordered the plot to go ahead? was that forged by Walsingham and the code breaker? Honestly, this was more complicated than a Le carre novel!😉

    Hmmph!! One would not want to cross Francis Walsingham!! In fact, he would do rather well in today's MI5 or even in the American CIA!!
    The irony of this sorry tale is that Mary's Protestant son, James, ended up succeeding Elizabeth anyway!! One may say that Mary got her "revenge" from beyond the grave through her descendants!!
    Thanks for the VERY INTERESTING and educational history lesson, Robin!! 👏💕❤💞👍

      Thank you - glad you liked it! 🤗 We are finishing up the theme of assassins and Babington really was one of england's ultimate assassins.We think it is a great story in terms of tense crime drama! And one could argue, similar to a regular criminal, she was executed for treachery as were her cohorts - in a very painful way. Thank you, as always! Two hours of crime drama coming tomorrow!

      Agreed! It was very tense times - a bit like a cold war, but internally. Elizabeth survived loads of attenpts and she had a papal bull over her head - urging anyone really to execute her - and that call out went world-wide. interestingly, Queen Victoria had 9 assassin attempts (we had considered doing that instead of babington, but the babington plot plays to our love of John Le carre novels), but they di dnot involve a worlwide request to have her assassinated. Thank you - glad to hear from you!🙌

    All Mary had to do was apply for a placement in a French Convent. I disagree that her situation was intolerable, she had the most expensive hairdresser in Europe who was paid by Elizabeth. She was able to "take the waters" at Buxton and Bath. Mary was very indulged as a child and too stupid to realize that she could never outwit Elizabeth and could never rule England

    • @newsofthetimes
      @newsofthetimes  13 днів тому +3

      The "intolerable" situation is the descrition from the reference. She had a staff of minimum 16 with personal cook, ladies in waiting etc. She was permitted to ride daily. In terms of stupidity - she certainly handled Scotland about as bad as anyone could handle her situation. 😗And, of course, she had no understanding of the severe position she placed Elizabeth in who had her own fine thread to walk in religious turmoil times. As for the papers take of her as a tremendous beauty with hynotic effect on men - she did go through them with a series of poor choices, except her poor choices had a rollout impact on her subjects. Not sure if babington was also under her spell as the papers say. 🤔 We think Babington was like many a restless naive young man who has read too many novels. We think he partly pictured himself as a personal saviour and saw himself in that role. He was young. Not our usual fare this - but we are finishing up assasssin season and this is one of England;s ultimate assassin's. Thank you - love to hear your thoughts!🙏
