  • The Monster Leger - France's Dracula
    News of the Times Episode 291 | 1824
    1824 North Central France, and the villagers looking for a missing 12 year old girl find a horrific mangled corpse. Some of the blood has been drained from the body and the heart has been taken out and partly consumed. Unspeakable acts have been perpetrated to the girl after death.
    The case of the “Monster Leger” fascinated the press and actually made the English press. Reports of crimes in France being reported in the English press was far less common in 1824 than post 1840.
    We take a look at the background, the crime, and the trial of Antoine Leger, the Monster, in today’s episode of Sinister Saturdays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

    YIKES!! What a gruesome story!! Poor little Aimè must've been ABSOLUTELY petrified!! My heart goes out to her heartbroken family!!
    Leger must've had a VERY warped mind to commit such a horrific crime!! I would say this was a case of an evil person coupled with severe psychiatric problems!! I'm just glad that he only committed one murder!! Mind you, one murder is always one murder too much!!
    Thanks for yet another enthralling video, Robin!! 💖💞💕💙❤

      Thank you - glad you enjoyed! Yes, a really different case than usual. We say here the French do hvae an edge with super strange cases. It would have bene interesting to know just what brain abnormalities they believed he had, but it did not make any of the papers that we could see. 1824 press was a lot different to even 1850 press.😉 Thank you as always for your kind support!🙏

    I do think that Leger was insane- the talking birds sounds a lot like auditory hallucinations.
    On the lighter side, I do like the ‘a cold made me do it’ defence. Not up to the ‘my husband took to napping in the stove and I accidentally cooked him’ defence but inventive nonetheless.

      😄Ah yes - the old "cold made me do it" defence. 🙄A type of 19th century "manflu" defence. We are with you - the accidentally cooked him in the oven is one of our favourites too!😊Yes, you are right, hearing things is always bad! It would have been interesting to know what kind of brain abnormaility was referred to, but it would have been strange as well for this kind of news ot make the 1824 press. We were actually quite surprised to find this story in 1824 press and covered in relative detail - highly highly uusual. Nice to hear from you - wishing you and family a lovely weekend.🙏

    This was a "horrific," murder of a young girl by a man who was clearly psychology deranged. To commit the unnatural acts of cannibalism and sexual violation after the death of this precious young child Amy, is beyond words. I'm thrilled he paid the ultimate price for this heinous murder. Do you know whatever happened to Amy's parents? Great investigating, presenting, backstory, illustrations, photos and videos, too. Take care 🦋

      Great questions!👍No, we do not kow althugh what was relayed was their uutter devastation at her loss. The whole case is interetsing in that it is so out of place from the usual types of press received in 1824. It was also quite a rural location - a strange and unique case in many ways. Thank you - glad you enjoyed. Wishing you and family a fab weekend!🙏

      You are so very very kind! Thank you - we are so very grateful!🙏🙏🙏This particular episode was tricky - 1824 international news was...curt. And if it was not about aristocracy or war - it was fairly rare other than weird weather news. So, it is perhaps difficult to relay how unsual the story was for the time. No, we do not have Patreon (although we probably should)🙄 but we do have "Buy me a coffee" - it is in our links. Once again - we are so very appreciative! Whoo hoo! We may have to indulge in a round of drinks for the team at the local pub!! 🍷🍺🍹We shall be toasting your very good self!🙌

    Hanged? Wasnt he beheaded by guillotine? I don't recall the French having hanging as a capital punishment

    • @newsofthetimes
      @newsofthetimes  Місяць тому +3

      You are quite right - he was guillotined which we do state near the end. The reference to "hanging" is from Leger's own words - he is referring to being strung up by the local villagers if caught (a real fear actually - we do know of cases where the people took the law in their own hands). Ah - yes, you are right!👍 - We put that in as the last sentence which, weirdly, we got direct from the English press! Those ignorant Brits! Of course he was guillotined. Well spotted you! 🔎

    Next time you might try and not use a crime scene photo so famous as the crime scene of Mary Kelly, the "last victim" of the Ripper. Other than that, excellent video, as always.

      It's a representative photo.

    • @newsofthetimes
      @newsofthetimes  Місяць тому +3

      Thankfully, there are not many crime scene photos of that horrendous a nature. 🤔What had happened to her body with the slice through up to her ribcage and the taking out of her heart was not that dissimilar and we struggled to relay that in picture form - that was why we used that picture, but not enlarged, and with the head not shown and with the statement "represenative picture" which we do always try to do when we are not using a graphic that we know to be directly associated to the case. Pictures in 1824 were in their infancy - there were still wood cuts in many cases and, of course, no photography. The location itself was rural, so no chance at all of getting any graphic for the scene from 1824 rural France. This is the challenge with stories earlier than Victorian (which can still be a challenge depending on the case and location). We apologise if you found this disturbing.,😔
