- The Stanfield Hall Murders
News of the Times Episode 53 | 1840
In 1848 a horrific two slayings, with two attempted slayings, took place in beautiful 13th century Stanfield Hall in Norfolk,
The killer, waiting for his moments in the grounds and dressed in cape and mask, methodically went through the house attempting to annihilate the entire family.
This case was considered tremendously shocking as a new type of crime - the systematic attempt to slay a whole family without emotion.
We take a look at this shocking case: the background, the crime and the capture of the Stanfield Hall murderer in today’s episode of Sinister Saturdays.
Hosted by Robin Coles.

Thank you. 😊
Another great episode of murder and mayhem. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you - really glad you liked it! We do love the older stories, but the language can sometimes be a bit awkward. It is hard to imagine the utter panic having a man striding about your house with a gun, cape and mask on, just shooting anyone in his way. 😱
Woohoo!... Been rewatching your vids all day. Thanks for a new episode Robin and Team.! Happy Friyah/Saturday~
Thank you! How kind! Really glad you are enjoying the shows! Thank you so very much for your kind suport!🙌
This was truly a heartbreaking story about the horrific murders of father and son plus two attempted murders of one household. Rush, had a grievance against the Jeremy's father and son about finances and property but it was absolutely no cause for him to try to kill the entire Jeremy family, period! I'm thrilled that he received the ultimate price for his heinous acts. Was Rush mentally insane when he committed these murders and attempted murders? Do you know whatever happened to the nine children of Rush? Great investigation, presentation, backstory, illustrations, photos, and videos, too. Take care 🦋
Yes, he was certainly a shady charachter! His agreement had been with the father of the two Jermy's - a reverend. But, what was found out when he died and Jermy snr took over (who was a recorder, so he had a good knowledge of the law) was that his father had been being cheated by Rush. Therefor a new agreement was made which was at higher rates and that is what seems ot have really bitten Rush and started the poor relations! And all of his shady deals were coming due at the same time - financially he was practically bankrupt.
No sorry - we do not know what happened with his nine children. Pre about 1860 papers tended more towards the short and sweet news articles - there would almost never be any follow up. Thank you, as always, for your unswerving support!🙏🙌🌟
Wonderful episode!!! Greed has been the downfall of many a a a person. Terrible tragedy and the poor family!
So sad! Great video as always! Love the channel!!
Thank you! Really kind - thank you for your support - very much appreciated!🙌
I like that you recite the language of the period your covering, rather than modernizing it to todays vocabulary, it gives your cases, aceoss all your channels wieghted authenticity, ie not just a narration, bravo it's really appreciated
Glad you enjoy it!
The earlier English can be challenging
But we narrate as was originally written
Thank you for your support 😀
The interior of Stanfield Hall looks VERY posh indeed!! I love the grand piano!!
Rush sounded like a dodgy character!! Mind you, I doubt the Jermys were squeaky clean either, especially Jermy Jr!!
I do think that trying to murder a WHOLE FAMILY AND their servants was a bit of an overkill (pardon the irony)!! I could understand him wanting the two Mr Jermys dead, but not the others!!
Well, Rush paid the ultimate penalty for his crimes, and I'm glad of that!! I wonder what happened to his nine children though!!
Thanks for telling this INTRIGUING tale, Robin!! 💕❤💞👍👏🤗
Thank you - it was fairly shocking in its day! We do not know what happened with his children. His supposed intention was that the blame would be placed on the remote family member contesting the ownership basicallly leaving the place with no owner at all! Shady charachter indeed...🤨
@@newsofthetimesDid you know that Stanfield Hall was put up for sale last year?! Must've cost a pretty penny!!
@@nadiabrook7871 Sorry for the delay - we have bene travelling! No, we did not know that. Itis an empressive place and, we could be wrong, the picture we sourced looks just like the entrance and staircase on Downton Abbey! Not sure if it is, but it look remarkably similar!🤔
My favourite!
Thank you - we really appreciate your kind support!✨
The crime must have made a huge impression to merit a waxwork of the villain. Very creepy looking.
Thanks very much. Have a safe weekend, all.
Thank you! Yes, you have made the big time when you made Mme Tussaud's! The clothes were probably his and given over, for money, from Calcraft. Thank you! Safe weekedn to you and yours as well!🙏🙌
@@newsofthetimes His clothes?? shudder
@@zero_bs_tolerance8646 Yes - that is what he did. He apparently made quite good money from it.🤨
As always I very much enjoyed your video. But please forgive my ignorance but what is a country recorder (Sr,s job) ?? I'm from the USA. I'm also very envious of you beautiful library
Thank you! We are not sure what the name of them would be in the states? The recorder manages the court cases - allocates which court case goes to which judge and which court case happens when - so quite an important role. In some of the way way way out in the woods places in earlier times, if there was no proper judge about the recorder would act as judge. We have done one case where that is what happened (but sorry, do not remember which one!). Thank you so much for your kind support! We love to hear from our American cousins across the pond!🙌✨
🙏🙏🙏
Thank you 🙏🤗👍
❤
Thank you!🙏
Mr Jermey sound like Mr Germy to me. The killings are very horrible events.
Quite horrible and quite shocking! It did not take long for Rush to be caught.🙌
Well done Robin and team 💯 what a beautiful place. He got Culcraf as executioner I'm sure he twisted a bit. Love from America 🇺🇸🇬🇧🏴
Yes Calcraft - who really enjoyed his job! Calcraft would also have collected any of his possessions and sold them to Mdm Tussaud's and keep whatever he took a fancy to after a long and painful death. The number of spectators of the execution was said to exceed 15,000. Thank you so very much for your kind comment and support!🙏🙌
wymondham pronounced Windham.. (norfolk and suffolk like to mess about with pronunciations)
Thank you
Sorry for the error 😁
Wymondham is pronounced Windham
Thank you
😀
Rush was indeed a murderous scoundrel but your crimes against the pronunciation of Norfolk placenames are unforgivable. Damn your eyes sir
Sincere apologies - we are tremendouysly fond of Norfolk and can pny apologise for our rubbish place name pronunciation. We thank you for your patience.😉🙏
