    News of the Times Episode 280 | 1850 & 1890
In today’s episode we look at two cases where the killer was named Catherine.
Our first case from 1840 Ireland tells a famous murder case in its day. Catherine has left her drunken husband and moved back with her mother. Although the drunken husband leaves for a while, he returns. The murder that ensued is most notable for the attempted cover-up with the involvement of Catherine’s mother who was also charged. It was unusual to have both mother and daughter in the dock for murder.
Our second Catherine case takes place in 1890 Oxford University. Catherine has been having a running affair with the junior dean of the College. With a gift and an explanation that their relationship is finished, Catherine is in a fury when she realises that he will be marrying someone else and takes what she believes to be justice into her own hands. This scandal in Oxford was huge in its day.
Two cases of killer Catherines from 1850 and 1890 is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.

Even though I don't condone murder in ANY circumstances, I do feel for Catherine Moore!! Patrick sounded like he was an abusive husband, and he did pull a knife on Catherine!! If only Patrick had NEVER returned after selling everything and leaving the first time!! This was tragic for everybody concerned!!
As for Kate Riordan, I reckon this was a crime of passion!! She was deeply hurt because her long term lover dumped her, and promptly got engaged to a younger woman!! Poor Dr Bright was the target of Kate's vindictive rage!!
Thanks for telling us the tales of the Killer Catherines , Robin!! ❤💞💖👍👏

We think you are right! The Moore story is quite sad. We have had a month of stories where women have been hitting hard, but the reality of most women was closer to these two stories. As for kate - there seems to have been some sympathy for her as a woman who had been treated badly - even with the financial "gift" she received at the end of their relationship. She would, of course, even in 1890 at 33 years of age be looking at spinsterhood. Thank you so very much for your support!🙏

These two cases of the killer Catherines' was very intriguing and yet sad, as well. First case, I believe that if Catherine had been able to submit more information about her "despicable" husband and what she endured in her marriage, I think she would have been acquitted or at the very least received penal servitude. I wasn't surprised about her mother's verdict, it was sad about her health issue. Second case, Catherine was fortunate that Dr. Bright didn't die or else she would have received the death penalty but I'm surprised about the amount of penal servitude that she received. Do you know if Haines married Dr. Bright's daughter? Great investigation, presentation, backstories, illustrations, photos and videos, too. Take care 🦋

Great questions! 😁Re Catherine Moore - we are less confident that it would have made any difference n 1850 Ireland. The man was the head of house - even if he was an awful person - and her duty was to him including putting up with him. We found the situation of her mother very sad. Re Kate - there seems to have been some sympathy in court that she had been "ill-used" and also that she was under tremendous mental distress. The leap in understanding and sympathy for mental disorders in 1890- compared to pre 1870ish - was huge and although there was no medical testimont proving this, there was sympathy for her. She did end up serving the full 6 years however. We think it was because it was deemed that the court had already been generous to her with the charge. No - We do not know if Miss Bright ended up marrying the rogue (we thnk he was a rogue) Haines! We already sympathise with her if she did. It would have been very sandalous to him if she had pulled out! Thank you, al always , for your support! 🙏

I can’t condone any murder but the first Catherine’s brother seems to have dropped both his mother and sister in it. I wonder if he was aware of the probable outcome of his actions? I
Also I think that today Catherine Moor would possibly have been acquitted of murder, especially if my reading between the lines about the nature of her husband’s abuse is correct. The “private” matter which contributed to Catherine’s leaving her husband sounds suspiciously like sexual assault as his other mistreatment was, seemingly, freely disclosed by Catherine.
    Ps. Congratulations on 2000 subscribers.

Agreed! The "private" matter was exectly our take on it too. Poor Catherine and her mother. 😔 We think the fear of losing erverything or even being placed in gaol himself possibly influenced the brother on his testimony? It is hard to say. The average 1850's life for an Irish tenement farmer was just grim. With seeing his motheraccused and possible execution as well as his sister must have been frightening. We would like to think that our understanding, compassion and legal system have advanced to have been there for Catherine now as opposed to 1850 Ireland. 🤞Thank you for your continued support!🙏

I absolutely agree. It's also worth remembering that it was not illegal for a husband to sexually assault his wife at the time, so poor Catherine would have had no legal recourse.
