My search for a personal best Tench
Four years ago I managed to secure a ticket to a venue that I have wanted to fish all my life. Steeped in history and having had some of the countries best specimen anglers tread its bank it was finally my time. Tench were my target and having managed a few sessions over the past couple of springs I was becoming known as Mr Nine-Pounder!
Time really isn't on my side and with the best made plans this spring going pear-shaped it was once again a few hours here and a few hours there, however my luck was about to change.
This video covers a couple of sessions last spring in which a few fish graced my net, as well as the first two sessions this year.

Match VS Specialist Tactics - Part 2
Переглядів 3,2 тис.2 місяці тому
In the second part of the video we head to the larger, harder lake and once again are greeted with not what you would call bream weather, however quite a few fish graced our nets this time. Unfortunately Colin decided not to read the script, watch too many videos and get brain washed in how to catch big bream effectively and squeaky clean me became influenced by him! Plenty of fish in this one ...

This video has been created to answer all the comments that have been made asking me to explain what I mean by Clipping Up, what exactly is a Wrap as well as showing you the best way to create a distance reference mark on your mainline and is for all those anglers that simply what to improve on certain skills and put a few more fish in their net. Hope you all enjoy, learn from this and then sta...
Match VS Specialist Tactics - Part 1

In this new series, I team up with a match angler and see how each of us tackles a swim next to each other. This isn't a match, it's just a bit of fun as well as showing the rigs each of us use for certain species at certain times of the year. Today's match man is Colin Sheppard and I take him out of his comfort zone, simply by taking him somewhere he's never been to before, Stillwater Back Lak...
Improve your Float Fishing - Part 1
Переглядів 8 тис.3 місяці тому
Today I head to Harris Lake on the Marsh Farm complex run by Godalming Angling Society, however the feeder rods have been left at home as this morning session is all about fishing a tactic rarely used nowadays, the 'Wag and Mag'. It's mid March, daffodils are out in bloom, surrounding trees and just beginning to bud and theirs still a bitter feel to the wind. Casting out the favoured flat-bed f...
What you NEED TO KNOW to catch BIG canal PERCH
Переглядів 6 тис.4 місяці тому
This week I headed out with James from @thefishingdiary for a day of Perch fishing on the Kennet and Avon Canal. The question is - was it the worms or the livebaits that won the day? The water conditions looked good but for some reason, the fish weren't feeding as confidently as they have been recently. To find the fish I had to move swims multiple times, and even switched from worms to livebai...
Pike Tutorial No4 - Enhanced Baits
Переглядів 1,6 тис.4 місяці тому
Their's only around four weeks left of the traditional pike season and unfortunately this will be my last pike tutorial of the winter. This video covers the subjects of colouring and adding oil to deadbaits, pre-baiting, and swim preparation. Hopefully this and my previous three videos have given you confidence to target pike as well as handling them carefully once landed. If you want me to cov...
Master Stick Float Trotting To Catch Chub, Dace, And Trout!
Переглядів 3,3 тис.5 місяців тому
Back in 2013, I was asked by Anglers Mail TV to help out two enthusiastic young anglers who wanted to get into making angling videos, their names were Carl and Alex. I decided to take them to the North Wey which runs through Farnham town centre in Surrey. It was a venue I had fished since my early days and was always a consistent little river where chub, dace and wild brown trout could be caugh...
Roving the River for Specimen Pike
Переглядів 1,9 тис.5 місяців тому
Having created three pike videos over the winter, ones aimed at helping fellow anglers build their confidence and catch more pike it was time I headed out for a few hours myself. Today was spent on a local river with my good mate Chris and we adopted a roving approach, visiting different swims and maybe spending at most thirty minutes in each. Conditions weren't ideal but we were confident of s...
Pike Tutorial No3 - Popped-Up & Critically Balanced Deadbaits
Переглядів 7 тис.6 місяців тому
My third Pike Tutorial covers the subject of how to pop-up and critically balance your deadbaits, tactic's that can literally take a venue apart. It covers three methods, popping a deadbeat straight of the lead, using what's know as the Bait Flipper which presents the bait hooks up and a must when fishing over silk weed and choddy bottoms as well as how to critically balance larger baits by ins...
Pike Tutorials Video 2
Переглядів 6 тис.7 місяців тому
The second pike tutorial video, this time covering the topic of float fishing with lives. I fully understand it's not everyones cup-of-tea, and its not something I have used for pike for many years, but it was a method I used when I was much younger, a time when I was just getting started in predator fishing, so thought I had to cover it at some point. This video was shot on a beautiful estate ...

Catch more Fish - Must know tips and advice

Have you ever been in a situation where the fish are showing in front of you but actually presenting a bait effectively to them is just out of your reach? It's certainly has happened to me on a few occasions, one being whilst carp fishing in France when the carp were crashing at around 120 yards. My good friend Steve 'Donut' Ansell can certainly punch a bait further than most and on this occasi...
Thames roach on hemp and tares
Переглядів 9 тис.9 місяців тому
This 'In-Session' video follows myself on an afternoon session to a very busy river Thames in search of a decent bag of quality roach on an old school tactic, hemp and tares. The session doesn't go entirely to plan, yet it was never meant to be about catching loads of fish but mastering an art that I have wanted to do for years. Some school-boy errors made along the way but if you don't make mi...
Late Season Tench on the Feeder
Переглядів 14 тис.10 місяців тому
Tench maybe somewhat easy to catch in the spring before they spawn, yet once this ritual is over they can be frustratingly difficult to tempt. This video follows me through a short early morning session, back on the estate lake, late August where although you can get them fizzing in your swim, if you don't get your tactics spot on, you will probably leave empty handed. The video includes some b...

Hi Duncan great video. Was that Enton lake?
Hey Duncan I've just joined GAS and have found your videos so helpful. Do you remember on this session if you fished down the margins or far out? Thank you!
Great content...would love to see some more perch videos with livebaits 👍
Hi Gavin, thanks for your comment. Im hopefully going to be doing some videos this year on the Thames, keep an eye out for them in a few months time.
@@duncancharmanangling1136 thats great Duncan keep up the good work 👍
Hi how do you hair rig worms cheers Jason 😊
Still wears his hat sideways ha ha, always enjoy his vids
Always enjoy ya vids cheers.
that is a NOPE bug. Also known as don't touch it because it will probably irritate your skin or worse !
Great video Duncan. Could I ask what hookbait you were using? Think you said pellet paste. What size of paste did you use and do you mold it around the hook? Thank you!
I don't understand why the swinger indicator is set up differently to carp fishing? Does it offer less resistence than a light bobbin? Can I use my bobbin indicators in front of the reel as for carp, and put the line in the rod line clip? Also, is the bait just bottom lip hooked? Thanks.
Not promoting your sponsor? You’ve got to be joking. NASHNASHNASHNASHNASH!
Nice one Duncan as always
Glad you enjoyed it
Morning duncan Just moved to surrey from the midlands and using your videos as a kind of guide to local waters ( have joined farnham angling also) my passion are tench and big roach/rudd so will be putting some time in at frensham shortly...... but i have to ask where is this pit ?? 🙏
Hi James, Frensham fishing well for tench this year. The 'big pit' is Ellis, CSAS venue, rock hard club to get into unfortunately.
Anyone know where this is?
Ellis, CSAS venue, membership capped unfortunately so rock hard to get into.
Great video, the tail on that 5lb Tench at 20 mins was amazing. Hope to see you soon Duncan.
Cheers Scott, see you soon....
Thanks, Duncan. Reinforcement of your help last year at the Tenchfishers. Only a 7lb 8oz largest of four this year. Tight lines. Richard
Glad to help!
\been fishing a large pit for Tench, One of the guys has been having luck on maggots in a feeder, But as much as Iv`e tried I can`t get one. They`ve been fizzing around the bait but not taking the hook, Which is a maggot kebab on a 10. Praps I should use worm. I have been using hemp and hali ground bait as well. You thoughts ? Great vid by the way.
Try cutting out the ground bait completely and cutting right back on the hemp and replacing with lots of worm cut up into small pieces and feeding a mix of worm/maggot and a bit of hemp with maggot on one rod and worm on the other.
Hemp.......Your fickle friend.
Hemp, devastating in small doses, disastrous if overdone
Hello Duncan, great advice and yes, all the time the bait is always a chance, I do love a big water, lovely Tench, these fish are just class, great job.
Thanks Clive....
Another quality video Duncan and some clonking Tincas. I hope Chris was upwind of you though after you ate that Chilli knowing your tendency to blow a good southwesterly or two!
He gave as good as he could!
Great video as always Duncan! I’m currently putting all my time into a small gravel pit. Worm kebab for whatever reason just doesn’t work, but switching to bunch of red maggots/T-rig works brilliantly. All the Tench I’m having average 5-6lb - however all the carp lads are pulling Tench in between 7-9lb on boilies… have you ever faced something similar?
Hi Bradley, unless the carpers are weighing their tench, which I suspect they're probably not, then take the size with a pinch of salt. I fished a big pit where I was told by carpers that double figured bream were a regular occurance, I caught hundreds, the biggest was 9.12!
Could it be eels biting through the hooklinks with the worm kebabs? I've had absolutely screaming runs from eels recently so I've been switching to wire twig rigs whilst its dark and back to fluoro from first light. I'd hate to think I could be deep hooking eels and potentiality killing them
It's not eels, probably pike (we have caught a few in daylight) as we have put in around a dozen nights over the last three seasons and only ever had one bite off in the night and caught one eels and never get screamers, apart from the one Chris had. If I was getting plagued by eels then would switch to maggot, if still getting eel runs then to maybe a small boilie so I could keep targeting my desired species. If the eels were that problematic would simply reel in and not fish at night or do exactly the same as you.
Thanks for the reply. Forgot to say the video is great and I've got a lot out of your videos for various species.
Great video Duncan. Very interesting tip about use of hemp and their pre-occupation on it. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great vid Duncan, very entertaining and informative, one of your best I reckon and that's saying something.
Much appreciated
You almost nailed it there Duncan. A tiny bit more emphasis on the hours and sometimes days spent looking for fish, the size (and low stock) of the venues and the extent of the weed would have added to the realism. I've just done 7 days on a pit it berkshire (a 10 hr return trip) 5 of those days were spent looking for fish, and I caught my first fish yesterday! Yes there are easier options for fish that might just scrape double figures (linear etc.) but for me the emphasis is on achievement. Those large southern gravel pits are something else.
Morning Tim, love your dedication and will include emphasis on time/stock/weed etc in the next video. Well done on your first fish, hope the hard work open the flood gates to plenty more.
Bait boats not for me. Too clinical. I find it pretty sad to honest.
Morning David, bait boats, there is a time and a place, I'd rather cast and catch as you saw as it makes each capture that much more rewarding. Each to their own but yes the over use is a bit sad.
Pretty bunch of great tench there Duncan. Great tips aswel. Thnx
Glad you enjoyed it
10.1 would do me. Well done guys.
I think a 10.1 would do most anglers, thanks for your comment...
Excellent once again Duncan.
Thanks Mark
When you fish this are you fishing off the bottom still ?
Fishing the bait touching the bottom
Always some sound advice in your videos. Keep it up.
I appreciate that!
Wow, this is helpful. Thnx Duncan
Glad it was helpful!
Much thanks, been trying to get my head around this for ages how to do this properly, thanks again legend.
Thank you John, glad I could help
@@duncancharmanangling1136 No worrys :) learnt loads off your videos. Ta again.
Very humble admitting he was wrong we’ve all been there, easy to stick to what you know, and not adapt to different waters and conditions.always good to learn
Learn by your mistakes, it makes us better anglers
Nice one Duncan, Are you actually casting or fishing off the rod top, like you would on a pole? Very well done mate.
Casting as the swim was too shallow of the rod tip then slopped away into deeper water
lovely video, haven't been for years, but used to fish Test and Itchen regularly - my PB grayling, dace, roach, sea trout and brown trout all came from the test, which says so much about the quality of the fishing
Thanks for your comment
Hi buddy how are you keeping 👍🏻🎣🐟 great to you back on the bank and having a great laugh cracking video 🐟🎣👍🏻me and my son are off to Stillwater for the weekend any tips like front or back lake he’s after carp or some pb tench and bream thanks
Morning, my brother fish's the back for carp and does quite well up against the island, Bream are in spawning mode on front and this lake has very few tench in it so the back again best for bream and tench at the moment. Hope this helps...good luck
For how long is it ok to keep them out of the water..? It seemed like ages, whilst you were talking at the end. 🤔
Best rods fox have ever done, superb.
Very nice! Which country is this? Well I’m go to tell a true story here in the USA, Colorado to be exact. Grass Carp. We used small Marshmallows that floated with a floating bobber. Anyways this true story was when I was about 17 or 18yrs of age. (I’m now 47) It was a power plant lake. Every cast with a bass spinner lure was a large mouth bass monster! The cast would not even touch the water yet and the bass would jump and take it out of the sky! Every large mouth bass we caught there was no smaller than 18” and as big as 30” for a large mouth bass. You can fit 2 adult size fist in that large mouth bass, that was crazy!! I want to say it was definitely a record and we was too young and dumb to claim such trophy status. Well we started to see large dorsal fins out about 50 yards out. From the dorsal fin to the back of the tail had to been at least 4ft to 5ft long. Well that is when my cousin said let’s catch it. So we saw the big fishes eat cotton balls that float across the lake cause the wind blew them off the trees into lake. The cousin said I got marshmallows! So we rigged up a #2 hook with bobber on a 10ib braided line. We cast it out there and within 1min we got one! It was like a thunder in the lake splashing. We fight this grass carp for over 10min until it tired. We got it close to the shore and this thing was monstrous! We all looked at each other and said…😅 You go get! Lmao! No one wanted to because of the size of this fish! It’s eye 👁️ balls was about the size of a cows eyes. Its girth was 40inches round and we measured it to be 4ft 11inches. This thing weighed 56ib on our scale which was maxed. Well the 2nd one we couldn’t bring in and this fishes was even bigger!!! Every time we got it 10ft from shore, it would jet splash back into deep waters. That went on for 30min and we meaning the 4 of us was taking turns trying to reel in this monster with 10ib braided. Well the only glimpse of this monster was his head, dorsal fin and tail at 10ft out in the water was at least 6ft and over 100lb the because it was a tank! It finally bent our hook and that my friend was the MONSTER that got away, till this day I wish I can still have it back! 😭😭😭 Grass Carp are no joke when they get that big and it was GODZILLA because of the power plant! Yikes!!! I just wanted to leave a true story here for everyone.
Love the videos, helped loads with my first year tench fishing I’ve used a worm kebab for tench twice and twice been bitten off by a pike 😂 back to maggots and casters for me!
Glad it was helpful. Worms can be a problem when pike are present, try using shorter sections of worms as its the movement that the pike home in on.
Absolutely superb banter!🤣 thanks guys, great video👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Can’t help but think after all this time have you thought what you’re wading in Duncan 🤔be careful please
Using old school swing tip please and a soft rod great service thanks for the uploads you have kept me going
Thanks Michael
Great video. Won't the stop rubbers slip when playing the bream? Surely the pressure would be enough for the hooklength to slide down to the feeder? Not sure if that would be a problem, but Im very surprised if the stop rubbers have enough grip to hold position when playing a fish. Thanks
When using size 16 hooks I play the fish very gently and the rubbers almost always stay put. Obviously the rubbers need to move under more pressure just in case of a crack off/fish lost etc. I find with some customers they tend to strike/pick the rod up too aggressively and play fish far too hard which means the rubbers slip down. If this happens then it's a good idea to protect the feeder knot with something like a small piece of tubbing which I always use when targeting tench that fight that much harder.
@@duncancharmanangling1136 excellent thank you
Great video guys, I do like a good old slab, enjoyed this with my coffee, get rid of that cold mate
Cheers Clive, the colds gone its just the horrid dry cough that's left
@@duncancharmanangling1136 Good to hear mate, you two fish well together and good fun 👍 😀
Love the banter between you two,
Its always light hearted when Colin's around
Hi Duncan, what is the optimum hook length on the helicopter rig and how far above the feeder should the rig sit, also would there be any advantage to tie an eyed hook with a knotless knot rather than a spade end hook? Keep up the good work
Hi Steve, 5inches seems to be best for bream and place the stops holding the hook length above the feeder so that when you fold the hook length against the mainline the hook bait is positioned just above the feeder swivel. Spade end hooks, never used them always an eyed hook tied knots knot style.
Absolutely brilliant video from Duncan, great sidekick in Colin.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice video and seemed like a good laugh was had between you.
Always fun when Colin's around
Very funny and very enjoyable. Perhaps another challenge should be on the cards and then a "Shit Angler" trophy could be awarded to the loser!
You up for the challenge then?
@@duncancharmanangling1136 Certainly, although I already have that trophy in my cabinet. Could try a carp fishing Match vs Specialist at Lodge Pond?
