  • The first in a series of pike videos that will be available to view over the coming weeks, this one being aimed at the angler looking to target the species for the first time, or those that have just started or simply want to make sure that they are doing everything correctly.
    Topics covered here are choose of venue, best times of the day to get those extra bites but more importantly when starting out topics such as bite indication, unhooking and equipment needed.
    Its my most informative video to date, covering not the easiest of topics but its certainly full of advice and tips that will set you on your way.
    Tight lines, be lucky and please remember to subscribe, give the video the thumbs up and leave a comment and I will do my best to reply.

    Thank you Duncan for these pike tutorials, really clear and helpful explanation.
    I’ve caught jacks with lures but I’ve never tried dead baiting, this has given me confidence to have go 👌

    Great little intro video for novices and more experienced alike there Duncan. Look forward to the rest of the series. Pity to hear about Baitbox and the Smelt shortage too. Interesting bobbins too, as we've all evolved methods over the years. Nice little haul of Halloween Pike though, some lovely looking ones there, even if Grandma is lurking out there somewhere :)

    Good morning Duncan, your videos are great and full of information, and some of us although the Pike is a predator fish, its also one fish that's not great out of water, so we'll done mate, great job, and all the best.

    Bleeding hands... another ESSENTIAL piece of equipment IMHO is a styptic pencil. Saves many blood stained hankies and towels. Cuts/scratches are minor but due to anti-coag they bleed/seep for a long time....

    It's the piking season -only 6 months of the year -so I needed some dead baits from Angling direct....."Sorry none in stock "maybe" we'll have some next week our other local branch doesn't have any either.Following week "Sorry still none in stock."

      Sorry for the delay in responding...
      Quality dead baits harder and harder to source these days, especially with BaitBox calling it a day. Morrisons usually have sardines on the fish counter, but these go very quickly in my store so worth getting in early, even talking to the staff, and yes many waters have a pike season running from the 1st October to the 14th March, some may vary.

      Hi Buddy, sorry for the delayed response.
      Quite a few of the angling clubs in the south now offer free tutorial sessions to members (basically you need to attend one of these to fish for pike on their waters) which I hope will spread across the country. There are pike angling guides, like myself that offer guided days for pike which include everything you need to give you the confidence to target pike. You can also contact/join the Pike Anglers Club who will give you some sound advice and point you in the direction of a guide if needed.
      Hope this helps...

      As long as they are razor sharp, should be ok. Glad the video inspired you to get back out. Tight lines my friend.

    Good video, looking forward to the next one, just a question as a newbie to Pike fishing with deadbaits, im confident with fish handling and unhooking as I catch plenty of small pike whilst lure fishing for perch, do you fish with the bailer open when ledgering deadbaits?

    • @awilderireland
      @awilderireland 7 місяців тому

      Bailarm open with dropoff indicators is the best. You can use them with a front bite alarm too if you wish.

      All good pike anglers will have those little cuts on their hands that bleed for ages, especially in the cold, but as long as its yours then its all part of being a pike angler.

    Haven't pike fished since I was a kid on Rishton Reservoir in Lancashire. Anyone know of a suitable day ticket water to start again around NUNEATON/ATHERSTONE/COVENTRY area? Thanks in advance.

    Ref your comment regarding Morrisons... in recent weeks most Morrison fish counters have decreased in size, often now sharing space with the also smaller butchery section, and now stock less produce. Even worse if you look at the Morrisons corporate site it indicates that they are moving to close the counters altogether and move the fish products to the chiller section as packaged pre-filleted produce!! 😭😭😭🤬

      Luckily I'm close to Birmingham Fish Markets (30 mins on train but as an OAP in West Mids the travel is free 👍😀) but even there suitable fish for bait (eh sprats, herring, sardine) are not that easy to find and so can be a case of experimenting with more exotic species.
      Chinese supermarkets can be a source too... got small frozen mullet and capelin (a silver member of the smelt family) at a reasonable price....

    Smelt .... go to Cyprus, visit the Iceland store and big bags of smelt in their freezers! No cost effective though for the weekly shop!! ☹️☹️

    Bail arm not bailer

    • @duncancharmanangling1136
      @duncancharmanangling1136  8 місяців тому

      When Im using bobbins on long drops and sitting right next to my rods the bail arms are closed, I simply strike as the bobbins move upwards. Open bail arms are used with drop-off systems which will be covered in future videos.
