Match VS Specialist Tactics - Part 1

  • In this new series, I team up with a match angler and see how each of us tackles a swim next to each other. This isn't a match, it's just a bit of fun as well as showing the rigs each of us use for certain species at certain times of the year.
Today's match man is Colin Sheppard and I take him out of his comfort zone, simply by taking him somewhere he's never been to before, Stillwater Back Lake, one I know very well.
Although fish are caught, conditions really did get the better of us, as you will see so we have decided that we wouldn't go into too much detail on the rigs and keep the close up stuff to part two which will follow in a few weeks time.
Hope you enjoy and thank you for so many who watched my last video on float fishing, made comments, gave it the thumbs up but more importantly hit the subscribe button. The more of you that do this, the more videos that will follow.

I found it hard last week in those swims. I had just the 1 in the morning with mate Rick having just the one too. Rick left early and I stayed on. 4pm and in the next 90 mins I picked up 6 bream and got smashed by a carp that took the bait as soon as the feeder hit the deck. 'cause I'm still clipped up despite my desperate efforts in trying to get it un clipped before my 4" heli hook link snapped. Really looking forward to the wag/bream film. I know a local lake where bream can crawl up your road at only 5 wraps. However, I'm intrigued to see how you fish that wag at real range Duncan.

Hi Chris, the fishings like the weather, 'hit n miss' and although I have fished clipped up in the past have found most sessions a carp is being hooked so make sure I un-clip always now. Can't wait to cast that big waggler out, its all ready to go, just needs to warm up a bit more.

I have always said, a good match angler working one rod when he's on fish will give a specialist angler a run for his money using two. Can't wait to see the outcome, it will be good!

Morning, my brother fish's the back for carp and does quite well up against the island, Bream are in spawning mode on front and this lake has very few tench in it so the back again best for bream and tench at the moment. Hope this helps...good luck

Most entertaining Duncan. Glad to see I am not the only person you rib on the bank! All joking aside though, I think it is important to show that despite the quality of the angler, some days it just isn't going to happen no matter what you do. Looking forward to part 2 and I hope Colin gets his revenge!

Great video. I'm glad to see that you had a challenge on Stillwater. I had a session on the front lake
this week & could only winkle out 1 bream at around 7lb. I thought it was just me, but maybe the weather is still not quite right for the bream to feed. I will be very interested to see how you get on long-distance float fishing. I don't ever recall seeing someone fishing on the float at long-distance for bream on Stillwater, but I bet it would be great sport if they were on the feed.

Cheers Andrew for your comment. Early on this week when there was a nice S/W wind it fished OK but mid week the wind dropped and bites dried up, then the fishing slowed up again. A couple of cold nights and cold hail going in will kill it again for a day or two. It's worth moving swim, even lake if no bites come, say after 90 minutes as the fish are shoaled up and a few yards left/right can make all the difference. Catching them on the float will be fun, just need the right day/conditions to do it.

When fishing to a gravel bar do you find fishing on the bar (if sufficient depth) of beside the bar to be better. Thanks always enjoy your videos

To be honest as long as the swim doesn't have any weed and a bait can be presented effectively I don't worry myself too much what lies beneath, especially when the bream are showing in that area. Put the bait in and they will be happy to feed wherever, yet with tench and carp Id prefer to fish at the base of the bar, where it levels out.

Excellent Duncan, looking forward to part 2. Also the video on clipping up. What are your thoughts on specimen landing nets?

    • @duncancharmanangling1136
      @duncancharmanangling1136  3 місяці тому +3

Hi Mark, thanks for your comment. Specimen landing nets, Personally I like the big barbel spoons when allowed as they can be manouvered around easier especially in running water but obviously rules are rules and big triangular ones need to be used especially when targeting very big fish. My concern is more with the length of the landing net handle as too short in the wrong hands can put miles too much pressure on a fish's mouth.

I've done the same experiment several times and with some top match anglers. I quickly came to the conclusion that those quivertip tactics with light feeders are cr*p for bream. Using one rod for fairness not once have I been outcaught. Imo the spodding of dark sloppy groundbait is part of the reason, the rigs are the other. Unfortunately due to guru's latest film offering I don't think I'll be battering them for much longer though it was fun while they were all looking down their noses at my tactics and ignoring my recommendations.

Your comment made me smile. We have been doing it for years, perfected it but they still don't get it....

Its partly down to snobbery. They think they are better than us but continue doing the same thing over and over without thinking whereas we adapt and change if we see someone getting better results. I had a conversation with Bob Nudd at a Chapmans Angling opening day. I got the impression Bob was annoyed with me for suggesting that if you hook a bream on feeder gear, it actually hooked itself! My point was why not work on making your rig as efficient at self hooking the fish as possible rather than resorting to some half arsed measure. Pete Kitwood was almost rude about my rig when I showed him! The guru film has proved that the specialist approach isn't just a bit better it is lightyears ahead and in a lot of cases the same can be said about the anglers!

Press on Duncan its an interesting question regarding diffrent approaches, even though there's a different expectation of a diffrent out come. Size or quantity of fish. When hopefully your further videos on baiting and casting accuracy is really what it's all about. Providing the fish appreciate it and stop being camera shy.
