      Thanks a lot 🙂 And I must admit, I only guessed about their golf skills... It's just that I don't like how the player on the left bends his left arm and to the right, Red Michell seems to have no body rotation at all (it's all hands). I like Hawes' finish though 😇 Probably one thing is to pose for a photo shoot - another is to play on the course.

    What a great video. I am from France and lived 10 years in Paris before moving to the USA 9 years ago. I am also a jazz fan, and a couple of my favorite vinyl records I carried with me are from Paris Jazz Corner (I remember the first time I went to the shop, I was young and a little shy, I got the Clifford Brown Memorial Album and the Tony Fruscella record. The owner was talking with a regular and they both watched what I bought. They then watched each other and the owner put my records in a bag and said " pas mal" which means "not bad". To this day, my favorite small victory). I know all the shops and restaurants you talked about and I think you did a fantastic job to describe everything with humility and passion. Thank you for this little trip in nostalgia, and most of all, great haul.

      Thanks for your comment, Harry. In addition to being a fantastic city in itself, Paris is also a European jazz music capital with many good record shops. Hi Captain. Now you have had your machine for a year, how do you find the cleaning of 7" singles? The reason I ask is because on the David Denyer site, he claims the HG only cleans half the 7" record and misses the outer-half section. I'd be interested to learn of your findings.

    • @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner
      @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner 2 місяці тому

      Hi - thanks for watching and asking. I don't do much in 7"/singles 🙃 but have just cleaned one to give you an answer (I have also watched David Denyer's - very long - video). My findings are: If you fill the water tank to the 7" mark (which is filling it to its absolute max.) the HG cleans the 7"/singles on the entire surface except for the 4-6 mm closest to the label. On my 7"/singles there is no recorded music in this area (the 5 mm closest to the label). So DD's assertion that it cleans only half the record doesn't hold up - but you'll have to fill the tank to the max. and be prepared to refill it frequently. Also, I add a few drops of detergent ("rinse aid"/"drying aid" - also used in a dishwasher) - it helps the water get to the record/grooves and it dries faster. Now that we're at it - 2 more things: DD's suggestion to add water to the US-container (not the tank) I will NOT recommend - at the 7" mark the tank is already full. and It's perfectly fine to let the water stay in the tank for some days, if you only clean one/a few records at a time. You don't have to empty and refill unless the water in the tank gets cloudy (and the filter darker from dirt). For me this happens after 10-30 cleanings depending of how dirty the records are. Good luck with your HumminGuru - I'm happy with mine (after approximately 800-1000 cleaned records).

      @@Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner Hi Claus, many thanks for your excellent reply. Obviously with you having cleaned 800+ records, then you know all about it and I'll gladly take your advice. My new unit just arrived yesterday. Hey Ho!

    • @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner
      @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner 2 місяці тому

      @@apollomemories7399 Congrats - hope you'll be just as satisfied with it. Another small tip. When refilling the US-container (from the tank): After holding the tank and pouring the first 1/4 of the water into the US-container then place it vertically on its short side/end and let the rest of the water run into the container from this position. In this way you don't have to holdt the tank in your hand until it's empty. DD doesn't do this - makes me crazy just to watch it... 😆

    • @apollomemories7399
      @apollomemories7399 2 місяці тому

      @@Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner Thanks Claus, yes, I did actually think of that refill issue almost immediately thinking "surely I don't have to stand here pouring it in very time?" Regards the operation, what I have noticed is that the machine does not seem to activate correctly with some records and the air bubble reaction is negligible and nothing is happening. I've checked everything, water level correct, record sitting correctly etc, but the machine simply will not operate. It goes through the cleaning cycle followed by drying, so essentially the record gets wet then dried. There's been zero ultrasonic process. I've just cleaned a few now and the machine cleaned one, but not the next, but cleaned the one after. Very strange. Perhaps I have a faulty unit?

    • @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner
      @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner 2 місяці тому

      @@apollomemories7399 My HG makes a very audible (and annoying) high frequency noise when I use it. I've found that this noise coincidences with the machine working properly. If however I by accident get the record mis-placed (so it doesn't sit/rotate correctly because it is not in place with the "rollers"/wheels in the container) the noise is not the same - and the cleaning is almost non-existing. Also, I've had a few (3-4 out of several hundreds) records that must have been just a little bit smaller/to small - these the HG did not rotate (and therefore not clean properly). I had to push them to one of the sides by hand to get them to rotate. These are the only malfunctions, I've experienced. If this doesn't "allign" with your experiences or troubles, there might be some sort of defect with the HG. I hope not - but maybe you can contact the HG team. BTW: Adding a surfactant (the thing from the dish-washer - just 5-6 drops/tankfull) made a BIG difference. Without it some records didn't seem to "receive" the water - it just kind of bounced off the record. I guess you have added surfactant already? If not, this would be the first thing to try. Good luck!

      Thanks for your comment 🙂 It is a great BE-reissue: Great sounding, flat, noise-free etc. - one can buy this with confidence. The interplay between the 3 musicians is good - though it's even better at "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" (and the others w. Scott LaFaro). The Cannonball albums are great too. With Miles at "Kind of Blue", Cannonball is the calm and "polite" sax-player - compared to Coltrane. But here (app. 10 years later) his playing is in some places more "wild" - but not over the edge though. Good luck collecting 👍

So I would love to see your perspective on Danish/European artists that may be somewhat under the radar and suggestions for records to buy. Thanks - Eric B, Kansas City

      Hey Eric - thanks a lot for your kind words and good suggestion 🙂 Actually I do plan to make videos of Danish artists - combined w. an overview of the international/ american artists that came to live here (Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Horace Parlan, Idrees Suliman, Sahib Shihab and several others). These musicians became a part of and lifted the Danish (European) jazz-community and made a lot of records which could well stand greater attention. Thanks again - Claus.

    Very interesting subject and you are right that it can help build a collection quite fast for less money. You probably know that there’s a twofer of the Bill Evans Village Vanguard albums and the interesting thing is that it has the performance in the original order as played live, plus an extra track. Thanks for the video 🙏

      Thanks for your comment 🙂 I know of the Bill Evans Twofer, but don't have it. And you're right: That would be the perfect thing for someone who wants to establish a jazz collection. The cheepest NM is under € 20 - a LOT of great music for next to no money! I have both "Sunday..." and "Waltz..." in 2-3 copies each, so I have almost all of the music (except for "Porgy") so... - but the again 😉

    I listened to Danish on YT & I'm impressed, it has a propulsive fast paced presentation that I enjoyed. An album with a similar, even cooler vibe is the Randy Weston Trio "Jazz A La Bohemia" with Cecil Payne on baritone sax & Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass. Unfortunately not the greatest recording, even for 1956, but it has a unique atmosphere that shines thru!

    • @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner
      @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner 4 місяці тому

      Thanks for the hint, Trevor. I'll check the Randy Weston out - hope it's not to "archival". I find that I tend not to play the ones I have where it sound the musicians are playing "inside a shoo box" - even if the music itself is good. Maybe you could say how this one sounds "shoo box"-wise?

    • @trevorbartram5473
      @trevorbartram5473 4 місяці тому

      Well, considering the engineer was Ray Fowler, whose later recordings are superb, the equipment used for Bohemia must have been poor. Or the tapes were bad. If they ever find better tapes it would make a great re-release. Luv early Randy Weston!

      @@Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner I definitely agree with you guys about the guy in the other UA-cam channel (if he ever did blind, level-matched shootouts I would be very curious about the results). But your comment made me think of a point: I would distinguish between organizing by the *original* label vs. organizing by *reissue* label. I'm actually impressed by folks like the Jazz Shepherd who have thousands of jazz records and organize separately by Blue Note, Verve, Prestige, Bethlehem, etc. That requires an almost encyclopedic knowledge just to find the record you want to listen to!
