  • In this video I review the Bill Evans album "Treasures" (the music and the quality of the records) - and I bring an interview with the man who provided the actual tapes which made this release possible in the first place.
    CORRECTION (December 2023):
In the video, I tell that the tapes which made this release possible were recordings of the FM broadcast made by Ole Matthiessen (who I spoke to and understood in this way) when they originally were broadcasted.
I have later learned that the story is a little bit different:
Ole Matthiessen WAS a young man when these recordings were broadcasted (1965 and onwards) and interested in jazz (and might have recorded from the radio broadcast).
BUT later he was employed by The National Danish Radio ("Danmarks Radio") and had acces to the tapes in the archives of "Danmarks Radio".
From these archive recordings, Matthiessen made copies, which he kept - and these copies were used for this release (and for Bill Evans: "Tales", which I present in this video: • Bill Evans "Tales" pre... ).
The original recordings are no longer in the archives of "Danmarks Radio"...

Thanks John - I'm always happy when viewers find my videos useful 🙂
And with the provenience of this album (recorded in my home country) it was something special to tell the story behind, I found.

TREASURES is possibly my favorite of all the recent Zev Feldman releases of Bill Evans...I suspect Denmark held a very special "vibe" for Bill Evans...His first European appearances were in Denmark in 1964. (Zev Feldman is releasing one of those performances next month, I believe.) Nearly every track is a masterpiece (this version of "Elsa" is his greatest), and the sound quality is excellent, at least on CD.
I already have gifted TREASURES to a few friends !

Yes it seems so. I’m looking forward to the RSD-release of “Evans in Copenhagen 1964” - think it might be from the same source as this one. Treasures sounds fine on LP as well.

Very interesting information Captain Phoenix! I also managed to get hold of a copy, but I am yet to listen to it. Thanks for finding out about the origin of the tapes! It is fascinating to know that there are more such recordings somewhere in the vaults of DR! Somebody should try to get to their archives and find out whether the original tapes still exist!
Mange tak for videoen! Lad os håbe at der kommer flere jazz plader fra glemte danske optagelser i fremtiden! Mange hilsner fra Schweiz!

Tak/Thanks - Yes it'd be fantastic if the DR archives contained more of the great broadcasts they made in til 1906/70'ies !
