    After making the video, I asked Ole Matthiessen (the man who provided the source material for the album) of a possible explanation of the problems on track B1-4. You can read his answer below (my translation from Danish).
    I find it plausible that the sound restoration on these tracks (recorded for TV - not radio) have needed more correction than the other tracks - and that the digital noise and lower sound quality stems from this.
    Maybe an explanation - but not an excuse!
    Ole Matthiessen's answer:
    "I haven't heard the release yet so I can't tell you what the reason is. Perhaps it is a matter of further digital mastering.
    But there are two different recordings, recorded by different sound people with different sound aesthetics. The radio's sound people were also specialized, i.a. for music production, while the sound people on TV often had to solve many very different tasks.
    One was broadcast on fm, the other broadcast on TV, both of which have different processing of the sound in terms of transmission before it reaches the receiver. In addition, sound engineers also had to deal with which media the music was to be heard in: a hi-fi radio system or a small speaker in a TV set.
    At the time, TV sound was usually not of the same high quality as radio production, this applied both to the sound track on the old video tapes, which could almost be compared to the later cassette tapes, where the radio recorded full tracks at 15 inch speed, just as the sound reproduction in the old TV sets was not at height down an fm radio. So there may be several factors at play."

      Thanks Mike - yes it was great being part of your show 🙂 Hope I can pop up again some other time.
      About the digital noise on this Bill Evans: I see several complaints about noise in Discogs reviews. It's clearly from the source material - and I can't get my head around how and why Bernie Grundman let this pass...

    Captain Phoenix awesome to meet you yesterday on the Jazz Bums show . Yes I was so disappointed with the beginning of side 2 yes i definitely hear it . But the side one is great but having this performance is cool I love when they find different recordings of Bill Evans unreleased material.

      Thanks Andrew - and great meeting you!
      Hope our ways will cross again 🙂
      And yes: To bad w. the Evans record - but since they play (almost) the same tunes on both sides, I guess one can just listen to side 1 😅

    Hej Claus! Hvilke pladeforretninger i Danmark kan du bedst lide at lede efter gamle jazzplader i?

    • @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner
      @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner  7 місяців тому +1

      Hej Nicolas - jeg har vist ikke fået svaret. Jeg har fundet mange gode 2nd hand jazz-plader i JazzCup (Gothersgade). Lidt dyrere men også et godt udvalg er der hos Sound Station (Gl. Kongevej) og også noget hos Mint Records (ligeledes Gl. Kongevej). Der er et stort udvalg - men ret rodet - hos Goldmine Records (sør'me også på Gl. Kongevej) og et stort udvalg hos Beat-Bop (Peter Hvitfeldts Stræde 14). Alle steder er i København/Frederiksberg.
      God jagt - Claus

    The second date's background "swishing" noise is less noticeable on the CD.
    On my copy, the noise mostly surrounds the high-hat cymbals. The tape sources for these dates being air-checks and not in-house radio tapes, the noise could have been due to a transmission distortion, not to Ole's equipment or recording process. Obviously, he had a better signal and better FM engineering on the first date, hence less of a chance of distortion. Perhaps Bernie Grundman had already reached the limits of filtering before it would remove parts of the music? Going any further with it might require aggressive, interventionist AI digital reconstruction.
    In any case, the first date alone is worth the price of the disc, and even the lesser-sounding moments in the last date are more listenable than the off-putting sound on the cassette-recorded BILL EVANS AT RONNIE SCOTT'S. But if a newly corrected edition of TALES is released, I will buy it.

      Thanks for your comment 👍
      I’ll consider buying the CD-version.
      And you’re right about the Ronnie Scott release - it doesn’t sound as good (and I very seldon listen to it…).

      What leaped out at me the most was the energy and SPARKLE of the music making. No doubt, being in Europe (and especially Denmark !), for the first time, acted as a warm stimulant to Bill Evans and his Trio. You can hear this in all the TALES tracks, but especially "How My Heart Sings" and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was." Chuck Israels is right - this is BETTER than their commercial albums of the same period. In my humble opinion, of all the studio OR live Bill Evans Trio albums on Verve (1963-1970), only the 1966 TOWN HALL and 1968 MONTREUX concerts, and perhaps parts of TRIO '65, could be considered top-drawer Bill Evans.
      But that's a topic for another day !
      In any case, I will almost certainly do what you have suggested: listen to the first date more than the second.

      @@markfarrington5183 - yes the Montreux album is great.
      In the week following the Montreux concert, Evans' trio recorded two studio albums, that are almost as good (and in a great quality soundwise as well). If you don't know them, you might want to check them out:
      "Some Other Time (The Lost Session From The Black Forest)" a 2LP recorded June 20, 1968 in Germany
      and
      "Another Time (The Hilversum Concert)" recorded June 22, 1968 in the Nederlands

      @markfarrington5183 7 місяців тому +1

      Yes, right...I had meant to say "Bill Evans Trio albums on Verve (1963-1970)" - not the whole period itself - so I just corrected that. True, SOME OTHER TIME & ANOTHER TIME (from Zev) are both essential Bill Evans - and I have them....Thanks for catching that !

    Thanks for playing the needle drop on this. I put my copy on immediately after hearing yours and my copy is a lot more subtle. I can hear it on mine but just barely. I honestly just thought it was noise from the room - not digital artifacts. I definitely heard it big time on your needle drop and that would be a huge disappointment. I don't know what the difference is but it's not as noticeable on my copy. Thank you for your video. Have a great week.

    • @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner
      @Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner  8 місяців тому

      Thanks, Melinda. I think it also depends on one's system etc.
      The microphone was places close to the tweeter (and away from the woofer) in my needle drop - I wanted to be sure the defect was audible for all to hear.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy 8 місяців тому

      @@Claus-CaptainPhoenixCorner I understand. It was definitely audible. I hope that the issues don't completely take away the enjoyment of the record for you. Hopefully, this is a one time thing for these otherwise great Bill Evans RSD releases. Thank you and have a great week.

    I agree with your observations; the cymbals on the first track of side 2 are quite messed up and I can also hear the buzz sound in the back ground and the other instruments sound rounder. for that song as well as the following 3. I am using a 2M Black, and listened with headphones, and did not have to concentrate a lot to hear those artifacts. Side 1 is really good sound wise (I started with side 2, then side 1). Yet, overall, I am happy to have this record; I really enjoyed both sides musically, as the music is very involving. Despite the mentioned issues, I don't regret buying it. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

      Thanks Carl.
      Yes the music itself is great.
      I had the mike closer to the tweeter (than the woofer) when recording the sample so it might sound even more pronunced.
      Ortofon 2M Black is a fine cartridge 👍

    Plus, I would think that a real AI digital cleaning could have removed the side B artifacts and restore the cymbals properly.

  • @michaeld1378
    @michaeld1378 8 місяців тому

    Found this video while searching to see if anyone else had the artifacts on the B side. Sounds like it could be bleed through from the video part of the tape or a tape not fully bulked erased before reuse. Agree with others, they never should have released like this. Side A is fantastic, though.

    I almost passed on this one but was able to get a copy off of ebay for no aftermarket mark-up on the price. Disappointed to hear about the audio quality in certain parts but at least these releases don't break the bank as long as you don't pay a crazy secondary market price. I always welcome another Bill Evans release to my collection.

      I've started to think like this: Since it's almost the same tunes on side A and B, I'll probably "just" listen to side A, since it sounds fine.
      Good you got yours for at fair price - I think the flippers will have a hard time making big money on this one... 😁

      Yes - the pressing itself seems OK (mine was anyway) - but that noise on B1-4 is hard to forgive them. I’ve asked Ole Matthiessen if he had noticed and if he might have an explanation. Haven’t heard from him yet.

    Yup, terrible technical quality. This should not have been pressed, and I can’t believe Bernie would let this leave his studio.

      Agree - he has his reputation to think of.
      Side one is OK though - and since it’s the same tunes on side 2 (B1-4), I guess one could just play side 1 - but that’s not how it’s supposed to be 🙁

    You know they waited years to finally release the greatest bill Evans album..
    I am so over these bottom of the barrel reissues.
    This RSD sucked. GP was boot like. The 13th floor is one of the worst recorded records of 1969. Same year as let it bleed..sounds like it was recorded inside a radio station.
    How many more of these mediocre releases by old WHITE jazz dudes do you need. Haven’t already released every chair creek by BE and CB. All this stuff and Mingus catalog sits there…
