The 2 and 3 track recording as from the early 60s and before required mixers, etc. to get that superior sound! This pre-arranged and pre-mixed approach allowed for the musicians to just play and capture their sound live! This is back when recording engineers really knew their stuff! They pre-captured everything! The later ‘let’s fix it in the mix’ approaches just killed live records in general! 42 tracks to capture 4-7 musicians is overkill, brother!

You’re right. That could (in some way 😊) be said to be another way to reduce the steps from performance to the record we buy.
